Data cables selling on ebay boasts the ability to access the net via the phone as a dial-up modem. Is this indeed possible with the 8200? If so, what would be sprints dial-up network settings (tel#, address & p/w)? Would I also have to be a vision subscriber or does it matter?
Thanks!

Yes you can. You would have to have Visions to be able to do this.

Thanks for your answer, but would you or anyone know what the properties would be for setting the phone as a modem and to dial into sprint's network?

Install the FutureDial driver package. This will install the USB cable as a serial port. Then manually configure the FutureDial modem (the driver will be installed but not automatically set up) with the port number that the USB cable is using. Then set up a dial-up connection to the phone number #777 with the username and password of web. Be sure to select the FutureDial modem as the connection device.
It's rumored that Sprint will cut off your Vision service if you transfer more than 700MB/mo. Note that tethered data is specifically prohibited in the Terms of Service.
