xcute dv1 Review

What's in the box:

When it comes to the package, xcute has outdone all the big names in mobile industry. If you thought Sharp 902 had lots of goodie in the box then you'll be happy to know that xcute dv1 comes with even more accessories. The box includes

This is without doubt the most “bang for your buck” that I've ever seen in a phone.

Built Quality:

Coming from a Sharp 902, built quality is the first thing that I noticed. Even though the material of the headset does not feel as solid as the Sharp 902, it does not feel plasticy. The phone is well built and the flip opens and rotate without any squeaks or force.

Keypad does exactly what is suppose to with good response and feel. Keys are well arranged except for the top buttons, which can be pressed mistakenly instead of the arrow keys. Keypad lights up blue in color, which looks pretty cool at night.

Battery Life:

Battery life is kinda iffy especially if you consider the small size of the phone. So far the best I was able to was about a day and half with 20 mins of calling, 15 mins of audio recording, half an hour of video watching, some picture taking and video recording.

Since the battery life is not so great, xcute compensated it by providing extra battery and desktop charger. This extra battery will come really handing, if you are planning to make a videos or take alot of pics.

RF and Sound Quality:

RF is on the medium side because I get signals at most places where I used get signals with my Gx32 but there are some places (at work) where 902 used to give me at one bar but Dv1 just goes to blank.

Like RF, sound volume is on a medium level too. It's neither very high nor very low. It's at a comfortable level where you can listen to the other party clearly and the other party can understand what you are saying. As far as the speaker phone is concerned, due to having only one speaker (unlike 902, which has stereo) the quality is decent but nothing extra ordinary.

Features:

As far as features are concerned, xcute has a truckload of them. Below are the features in detail.

1) Camera:

a) Still Camera:

From the time you press the button to take the pic to the time the camera is ready to take another pic takes about 4 seconds and that's on 3 megapixel. This is simply amazing because Sharp 902 takes pretty much same time in just focusing the object and then another few seconds to save the pic (2mp picture). There is absolutely no shutter lag, not even at night.

Dv1 has TONS of settings to help take great pictures.

b) Video Camera:

Video camera is without any doubt the best ever on any mobile phone. Xcute dv1 can record video in avi, asf and mov format at 30 fps. The video recording quality is almost identical to a video recorded with a regular VHS video camera.

2) Voice Recording:
Like other features, sound recording has tons of settings too. Best of all there is no time restriction on audio recording.

Codec Type: Using this function, you can select different sound recording formats. Totally 4 different
modes –PCM8, PCM16, ULAW and ALAW are available.

Channel: Here you can adjust the sound filed to be MONO or STEREO.

Sampling Rate: With this function, you can set the capturing speed of sound; you can select 8,000HZ; 11,025HZ;
12,000HZ; 16,000HZ; 22,050HZ; 24,000HZ; 32,000HZ; 44,100HZ. The higher the value, the better the quality of
sound.

2) Mp3 player:

Mp3 player is xcute is not as good quality as Sharp 902 but with the stereo headset (included) it sounds decents. Mp3 player has five band pre-set equalizer which includes Classical, Jazz, Rock, Pop and Flat.

3) Video Player

If you thought that Sharp 902's video playback was great, wait till you watch video on xcute DV1. Even though the screen is small than 902 the vidoes looks amazing. Xcute Dv1 supports playback of mov, avi and asf files; that can be played at 30 fps.

One of the biggest problem that users had with Sharp 902 video playback was that the process of putting videos on the phone was very lengthy and cumbersome but in xcute dv1's case the process is as easy as 1,2,3. Just install the video software that comes with it, import any video file and the software will convert it to a dv1's recognized format.

You can also link/join all your videos that you took with the phone to make one big video file.

Unlike 902, you can rewind/forward your files in three different speeds; 2x, 4x , 8x.

4) Picture Viewer:

Pictures can be viewed as a slide show and also as thumbnails.

Slide Show Mode

Thumbnail View Mode

5) Other Features:

Some of other prominent features are

Pregnancy Calculator: You can calculate the possibility of pregnancy on any given day; possible pregnancy date and the date of next menstruation by enter information relating to menstrual cycles.

Unit Converter: Can be used to convert units of weight and length.

User Profiles: Here you can not only set different tones for each profile, you can also setup "Answer Mode", which set whether an incoming call is answered by pressing any key or opening the cover.

Melody Compose: Here you can create your own ringtones.

Single Page AVI Menu: You can turn video files taken by DV1 into AVI dynamic files to make personalized main menu.

Zoomed Pictures: While viewing pictures, you can zoom in and press capture button to take picture of the zoomed picture.

Some pictures of the phone

Update

Found out two new cool features.

1) Just on top of the camera, there is a slider button which I thought was to switch between Macro and regular mode.....but I discovered that its actually a manual focus.

2) There is a cool power management feature where you can set a time at which the phone will automatically turn off or turn on. A really neat feature for nite time. Just set it up to turn off at night and then automatically turn on in the morning .......... No loss of batter life

Pics taken with DV1

So what do you guys think...........can it be K750 and N91 killer (just in camera and vidoe) ?

Posted by: braindead5400

camera/video, of course, but it won't outsell them. I'd have one in my hands right now if it had bluetooth.

did you happen to read the review at mobile-burn.com?

**Nevermind, I just saw the thread in the lounge**

I was actually planning on getting this phone after ajamils review but now that I've read the review from mobileburn, I'm gonna pass. No bluetooth, no IR, no email support, no mms, the poorly implemented feature dial and the lack of T9. There are just too many things that I don't like about it for me to buy it.

I completely agree with your concerns and thats why i think that dv1 is not for everyone. Its ONLY for people who just want basic phone with exceptional multimedia functionality. For me, dv1 has been a good phone because it does everything that i need from a phone (mms, calls, alarm) plus gives me features of a stand alone camera (stills, awesome movie recording).

Finallyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Posted by: ajamils

Probably the best pics ever taken with a phone .

Just by looking at these pics......you can see that there is absolutely no shutter lag otherwise taking pics of such fast moving object is almost impossible specially with a phone cam.

i just got my DV1, although mines called the AK900 AK mobile. same phone otherwise.

one thing i dont like is the build quality otherwise its lived up to my expectations, awesome pic quality, very nice customizations, tiny bit laggy but its expected in any phone.

Where did u read that ??? Followin are the real specs.

Main screen color: 16700000 colors

Inside: 2 inch TFT; Outside: 1 inch OLED Screen size,

Outside screen color: 65536 colors

Main screen resolution: 640 x 240 pixels

Outside screen resolution: 96 x 64 pixels

Thats basically the same as dv1.

yeah, same. ill wait till end of this year or next year. cause quite honestly 3mp is still the leading resolution and will be till end of next year. this year is mainly 2mp for nokia and SE, we still hold the phones with the most and will hold the most for awhile. 6mp is overkill that can wait.

ajamils :-

man can u give me ur thoughts about the difference between the xcute and the sharp 902 cuz u sound to be the only one who tried both

i mean custemizable wise and animation and not being bored from it

i can see the camera is way better for the xcute.... but how is the zooom ? and can u zoom during taking shots or recording pics ?

can we have a video with zoom plz ?

Posted by: bronco

its just digital zoom but surprisingly its better then other phones digital zoom, probably cause its got 3mp to zoom in on.

the only thing that might make you hate this phone is hte build quality, it looks toyish and very poorly built, otherwise its an awesome phone. very lil lag, i would never get a sharp again cause of its lag, pictures save in 2 seconds when taking one, with the 902 its anything from 4secons to the crazy 15 seconds ive heard.

Posted by: braindead5400

actually, its between 4 sec. and 30 sec. depending on your firmware, luckily, mine does it in 4

Posted by: ajamils

Mine is about the same. But compared to that, xcute only takes about 1/2 - 2 sec to save pics.

Posted by: bronco

yeah, at highest resolutoin its about 2secs max. usually its click, save.

Posted by: bronco

ok i wana ask something, when the camera is facing you, and you turn the screen to take a picture of yourself, the image is flipped upside down, how do you correct this?

Posted by: ajamils

Goto "Multimedia Mode" --> View the pic --> press left soft key --> scroll down to "Rotate" --> Select "180". That will fix the problem.

Posted by: bronco

but theres no way to see the picture right side up when taking a picture itself right?.. itll always be flipped? only after taking then you can flip it

HEY....congrats for the descriptions, videos, photos etc....

well i am about to buy it so i have some last questions:

1) When connected to the pc, can you transfer via the usb cable, photos, videos etc? or do i need a card reader for that?

2) In what format does the mob record videos?...i mean does it record in avi immediately? or do you have to change its format after....like nokias 3gg or something

3) How about warranty?...if something happens, do you have somewhere to address your problem? because it is not supported by the local store network so no service.....

4) Was there any memory included (not the 20mb) .....

5) should i get it in orange???

Sounds like a very very good phone ....hope i can make it and buy it....

Yes you can transfer everything but I prefer card reader because its faster and easier.

It records videos in avi, mov and asf. You dont have to do any conversion, it records directly on your selected format.

If something happens, then you'll have to ship it to Taiwan....or throw it away.

Nope

Quote:
5) should i get it in orange???

I have the blue and I like it because its different from the usual silver color.

Quote:

Buy it, I'm sure you won't be dissapointed.

Posted by: cafeine

Hahahaha...well thanx very much for the reply....

after your answers I am definetly buying this baby till end of the week....hehe.....

Although, I am heading for the orange after all.....we will have all sort of colors in our small club.....

First DV1 is about to come in Greece!!!!!

Posted by: cafeine

I have 2 questions:

a) I can't decide which color to take it...

b) when are in camera mode, in order to capture a photo can you do it by pressing the "mode selector button"? ....and to capture the next can you do it by just pressing (again or twice or something ) the same button?

Posted by: cafeine

More questions: since you guys got it, could you post any company emails, phones or something so that if anyone wants to contact them....

2. How about the TV cable....which format is supported? PAL, NTSC etc and what cable is it? SCART / SVHS / RCA style...??

having fun with the mob???

Ajamils u said in page 2 that DV2 has 3x OPTICAL ZOOM... are u sure of that?

so far so good. loving the pictures taken with dv1 but hating the cheap built quality.

As for dv2, haven't found any new information. I emailed xcute 2 weeks back but never got a reply from them.

hi everyone..

finally got my mini sd card and i gotta say that the mp3 player sucks.. it's even worst that the one on my nokia 6230, really poor sound quality.. anyway..

another thing I noticed: the only settings the conversion program propose me is avi, qvga/15 or 30 fps and vga at 30.. is it the same for all of you or it's just my stupid PC again???

and.. vids taken with the phone at qvga/15fps look ok, but when I converted some vids taken with my canon camera at qvga/15fps into the same with the bundled sofware.. they looked horrible in the phone screen, I had to convert then into vga/30 but that makes no sense in terms of space.. I'm a little confused..

in the mp3 issue, i'm gonna modify the headphones by putting a female 3,5 jack on them so I can use them with any headphones, I hope I wont screw up the cable..

somebody knows about a firmware upgrade???

This weekend I was playing around with my DV1 and I noticed some new things..

1. When you connect it to a tv, sound doesn't go through.. I don't know if my cable is broken or if I'm doing something wrong but if it's not the case.. it was silly to put stereo jacks on that cable..

2. Some settings you do in the camera mode are refflected in the camcorder mode.. (try to shot a clip while you got the night setting in the camera mode..)

3. I managed to put a female 3.5 jack in the headset cable (it wasn't easy) and.. mp3's sound a little better depending on the headphone you use but volume remains too low, really low..

4. you can get really good video quality to play in the phone screen at qvga / 30 fps.. but.. make sure the source video kb/s rate is higher than 800 kb/s.. using this setting you can managed to put a whole 2 hours movie in a 1GB card.. I wouldn't recomend to use qvga / 15fps, they don't look so good in the phone screen (neither in the pc screen actually).

5. Otherwise, vids taken with the phone look good.. if you managed to be really steady while shootin them.. hard to get not jumpy vids with the phone..

.. missing sound quality of my sharp 902 and a "stabilizer" like the ones on real camcorders would've been just perfect.. but.. it's still a great phone

thanx.. seems like the version we got with the phone has limited features.. I read in the help files that come with that the full version of the software offers much more features.. anyway.. i'm waiting for the release of some PMP named Archos Gmini 402, my mp3 and video watching issues will be solved with it..

what happened after all with the audio in TV mode?...

and what is that PMP you mention?....have you contacted the company and asked for a reflash or something?....

Yes you can. And also, when you watch video from the phone on TV, you can hear the sound. Just turn down the sound from phone, and turn tv volume up.

Yes, all the major brands are atleast 2-4 years behind rite now.

I don't see anything the xcute has that is really that special except for the camera. I wouldn't call a phone that lacks bluetooth and mms ahead of the game either

it all depends on your preference....for people like me... a basic phone with awesome camera capabilities is more important than bluetooth.

Posted by: braindead5400

That makes the phone fit for you but it doesn't make the phone ahead of its time, there is nothing special about the xcute and its only made worse by the phones build quality

Posted by: bronco

theres something cool about this phone i forgot to mention, probably already has, when i was selling it and i packed it up in the box after taking out the sim card, and the phone was off, the alarm still went off. personally i found that really cool and freaky considering it was already all packd up nicely and my ringtone sitll went off :S.

I know alot of phones can do the alarm thing while off but I'm not sure if they can without the simcard

too bad teh phone looks fugly... the cam looks pretty nice
and is there support from xcute if somethign goes wrong? i remember innostream was a bltch to deal with... problem with these smaller companies

Ok ....so first things I noticed....

prons

+ Menus are logical and quick...(forget moto's speed)
+ Phonebook well equipped with searching functions etc
+ Mass customization
+ Very good camera & video
+ Easy TV, PC connection (pc accepts it as removable disk, so transfer is just copy paste matter)
+ I have MMS function
+ Silver color is great!!!...very luxurious...

- when connected to pc and then disconnected..phones shuts down
- keypad is getting warm after lot of use
- keypad is ...well...it's a bit small....
- when connected to TV, screen is horizontal instead of vertical...

Ajamils have you any solutions to the above?....

Otherwise, build quality is not bad, i would say it's average to good....
usage is superb, very easy menus with common logic and for the price I think is the best you can buy if you are looking for a camera - phone....

Hello all owners of DV1

I have few questions...

First of all, what was the thing that you could not send MMS with dv1?

And another question, more important one, WHERE CAN I BUY THIS "BEUTY"? I´m from Finland.

Thanks guys!

You can send MMS with DV1 but you have to know the exact settings for your carrier and also how to enter them in dv1.

Hey ajamils...can we see some pics in full resolution? Or at least bigger than 640x480. Resizing a 3MP pic to vga doesnt really tell us **** about the picture. And can you post some more screen shots (using macro)? Thanks in advance
