Why doesn't connection manager make proxy use transparent?

Folks,
I've spent the last few weeks playing with my new SMT5600, and don't understand something. From what I've read, the connection manager is supposed to silently manage all outbound traffic once the proper network settings are entered.
Why is it then, that only those applications that I can explicitly input proxy info into ( Internet explorer, Opera, ...) that can access the net?
Even built-in network applications (like Windows Media Player) that don't allow any connection info manipulation don't work.
From what I've read, I'd be able to do this with a Nokia 6230...
