Since ATT Wireless was bought out by Cingular, it should be no issue. To make your life easier, you can flash it to the Cingular ROM (Current version 1.43), which will give you all of the Cingular standard settings and features. Some of the ATT MPx220s were locked, so ensure he calls and has it unlocked with Customer service before you get it (otherwise you may have to pay for an unlocking fee).

Once unlocked, it will come right up on a Cingular sim......then you can be like the rest of the hordes and live the triumphs and tribulations of a Windows "Smartphone."

How much would the unlocking fee be? Doubt he'll pay it since I'm gettin it at a steal

Once unlocked will it be able to use the 850 band?

It should not cost him anything to unlock the phone......ATT should provide the unlock code for the asking. Otherwise, most people are paying between $20-$40 for an unlock code.

Additionally, locked or unlocked, the 850 band should be available.

Welcome to the forums...

As V2A2 said, it will be A LOT easier if your buddy calls and has ATT unlock the phone first. They may give you some gripe about it and try shuffling their feet, but they have to. (I'm on T-Mobile) When I had to deploy overseas, I simply told them I was bringing my (old) phone and was going to use a local SIM card. They had the unlock code for me in about 2 days.

The other method that V2A2 mentioned is through third parties on the Internet. The pricing sounds about right, and from what I have heard on this forum and on Modaco was that it takes about a 1-2 weeks to get the unlock code in.

::cheers::

All bands on the MPx 220 are usable and none are "locked" all you need is a SIM from a carrier that uses the 850 band, like Cingular.
