Correct Procedure for Installing Modem Driver?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

OK, Either I can't read, or I'm missing something.

I successfully upgraded to 1.39 last week, installing the modem driver successfully. Yesterday, I'm trying to upgrade to 1.43, try the online wizard, times out, try the offline wizard, times out. WTH? So, I go back to look and see if smartfon.inf is still in the windows directory and it is. The I pull up the device manager to see if its there. It's not!
The motorola directions don't mention you may need to reinstall the modem driver every time you upgrade, do they?
So, now I just get a "USB device is malfunctioning..." error message, I can't see the modem driver in devices, and the phone is not being recognized in modem mode?? ( I've done all the standard things I've seen in the forum, battery out, sim out, sd card out...turn on modem in phone, no result).

Would someone like to take a shot at a proper procedure that makes some sense to insure the phone can be recognized for the flash upgrade?

Many Thanks!!!!

V

The FAQ entry below lists the process that I followed to install the Modem Driver (on Windows XP).

Thanks DC, but I never get prompted as specified in the directions, I only receive the "USB device malfunctioned" message. Is there any other way to install the d*** driver??

Why does it uninstall??

I'm having the same problem! upgrade to 1.39 worked just fine, but can't upgrade to 1.43. I already tried with different cable, different pc, newly installed windows xp but with no sucess.

Interestingly is, that when I hold left nav key some kind of booloader screen is displayed with ... USB connected and driver gets installed but still can't upgrade.

any help would be very much appreciated.

USB ports get funny sometimes. Use a different USB port on your PC and I bet you, you get the "found new device wizard"

At least I'm not crazy, although I'm getting there trying to solve this issue. I don't understand what 1.39 changed in my phone so that it is no longer recognized when in modem mode. I was hoping one of our resident experts would have experienced something similar so we would have a work around by now...
I'm running a stable xp sp2 with no other problems. Can anyone shed light on this issue??

thanks,

V

It has nothing to do with 1.39. It's your PC! Just try what I posted above....

Sir, a debt of gratitude. Rebooted the pc, disconnected all USB ports, plugged into port 2 instead of 1 and VOILA! Recognition! I've just completed the upgrade and am playing around with 1.43 now!

Thank you!!

The key word there is "Reboot" people. A reboot solves about 90% of all computer related issues
