Very EASY way to flash a S66 to S65

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Weeze-Dog

OK guys and gals, I have found a very easy way to flash the S66 to S65.

Note: Standard disclaimer applies - Try at your own risk etc....

Ok here's how to do this, and I've found this method is much easier and safer than flashing with someone elses fullflash.

Download x65flasher (I can provide a link to the version I used after I get off of work tonight)

- [Recommended but not requred: backup your phone with x65flasher]

Phone must be turned off at this point.
In x65flasher, choose your com port and speed, and click connect. It will now prompt you to turn on the phone.
Once connected, click Advanced and choose change phone model.
Change phone model from S66 to S65. This modifies the bootcore, which is why I recommend backing up the phone.
Once the model has been changed, you can click disconnect, and restart the phone.
- Explanation: Model number is stored in the bootcore as well as in the firmware. If you don't change the model number in the bootcore, and you attempt to flash the phone, you will get an error stating "Software update denied by mobile" because the firmware model number does not match the bootcore model number.

At this point, the bootcore is corrected, but the firmware will still show S66. If you go into the phone information menu that displays the phone info, it will still show the product is S66. This is because the firmware is S66, so you can't flash to S65 with the official siemens software. You can, however, flash to S65 with the WinSwup versions.
Some of these can be found at:
http://www.siemensmania.cz/firmware.php

I was able to flash my S66 to S65 fw50 with just these 2 steps. Worked great.
The WinSwup will prompt you asking if you wish to flash S66 with S65 firmware, and also since the Model was changed in the bootcore, the phone will not reject this firmware.
Once this has been done, you now can also flash to offical siemens firmware, since you now have S65 firmware installed.

Questions/Comments?

Also, you may wish to backup your address book with Mobile Phone Manager before flashing to a new firmware, it always deletes your address book.

So does doing this flash allow the S66 to work on 900/1800 Mhz networks? Surely not?

No, the frequency band is hardware based and can not be changed via software.
S66 supports 850/1800/1900

if you flashed the s66 fw34 to s65 fw43, can you just run the siemens update program to update it to fw50? or do you need to find a full flash fw50?

No full flash is needed, you can run the siemens update. So long as the bootcore has the model as S65 and the firmware shows the phone as being S65, which it would if the switch was successful. Its worked fine for me.

However, I did find out that it is not possible to provider/subsidy unlock the phone with a firmware in the 40+ series. I had to downgrade using my backed up S66 firmware with x65flasher. With the siemens flashers it is not possible to downgrade back into the 30-series of firmwares, its rejected by the mobile.
I tried 41 and 43 and couldnt unlock the phone, but I down graded to S66fw34 and I now have a completely unlocked phone. Then I upgraded back to S65fw50

I used Siemens SST v5.31 for this, apparantly doesn't support unlocking in the 40+ series. I remember reading something about not being able to get boot loaders out of the 40+ series firmwares. I think goldhead mentioned it in his how-to.

Posted by: joey322

awesome. it's ok since my phone is already unlocked. then i upgraded fw34 to fw43.

Posted by: goldhead

Great work Weeze-Dog! I was wondering why I never could upgrade the firmware with WinSwup. Now I know.
Yeah, if you follow Weeze-Dog's guide, I would still higly recommend making a fullflash backup (using "Read Flash" in x65flasher) as the first step. And the next thing I would do would be to backup the loader generated by x65flasher and stored in the config.ini file and also backup the V_Klay loader that will appear in the V_Klay directory. Because once you flash to FW higher than 34, you will not be able to generate these loaders (well, there is a way I read now, but you have to take your phone apart and do a physical testpoint) and therefore if you lose them, you will not be able to return to your backed up fullflash. You would have to downgrade without doing a backup if you wanted to start using x65flasher or V_Klay again.
Hmm, so this change phone model thing writes in the bootcore, eh? I would be very careful anyway, because every time your bootcore is being changed, there is a chance you will not turn on your phone again. But I guess if Weeze-Dog tried it, it should be pretty safe.
Thanks again.

AFAIK there is no official Siemens FW50 out yet. You would have to use the WinSwup version.

Posted by: joey322

thanks goldhead. i was wondering... since i was looking for it, oh well i'll wait for the offical one to come out.

Posted by: docjay

after doing the following above with x65flasher on my s66 I get the following error message on winswup 32 (fw50)

Error on waiting for Ack EOT

my phone is on when I click start on winswup and it shuts the phone down, but after that it just times out with the above error.

any ideas or has anyone else experienced this and fixed it?

Posted by: Weeze-Dog

Do you have a genuine siemens cable? I find that I have alot of problems with generic cables. Fashing doesn't work very well, if at all with them. You can get genuine cables on ebay for about $10 from some sellers. I got mine that way.

Posted by: docjay

yeah, I made sure to get a genuine cable off of Ebay before I started my FW flash. Its a genuine DCU-510 from here and it was recommened in this thread so I'm confident that my cable is good enough for this FW flash. Has anyone else come across this issue when using winSwup and a s66?

Posted by: Weeze-Dog

That is the same cable have.
I would suggest trying a different firmware version, and perhaps a different computer as a test.
Make sure to download the winsup version for S65.

Also what speed settings are you using in winsup?

Posted by: Weeze-Dog

From googling the error, it looks like you might be using a speed that can't be supported.
Oh yeah one more thing, you have to turn the power charging off when trying to flash, it won't work if the power on the cable is turned on.

Posted by: docjay

okay, I'll try a different speed & when I have the charger on it lets me know that I need to turn it off before it can proceed.

I tried a google to on that error and all I got back were german & russian sites that I couldn't read or wanted to translate. Thanks a lot!

Posted by: docjay

hey - thanks for the speed change suggestion, it did the trick...thanks a lot for all of your help!

right now its about 27% through, so hopefully this new FW will be worth it.

Could be a stupid question, but I bought a S66 yesterday from Cingular, and I hate the fact that everything in the UI has been 'cingularized'...
What would be the benefit of moving on to a FW50 ? (I'm searching the web at the same time you I may have an answer to that)
What's the side effect of having a S66 becoming a S65 ?

Unlock the phone...well with those 2 years contracts with Cingular it's not really of value but I have SIM cards for UK/Norway/France when I'm over there so it is of interest for me to unlock it instead of carrying my good old M55, so if I move to FW50 does it mean that it can't be unlocked at all (ie even by going to a shop to do it) ?

Posted by: Mr. Kobayashi

So I have the version x65flasher R1.055

There are only five different choices on in programme: backup, restore, flash map, read flash and write flash. In the read me file it says it cannot write to the bootcore and there is no "advanced" button on the flasher interface.

Can someone please send me a link to the flasher used in this scenario?

Thanks.

Posted by: chillexistence

Hi,
What exactly are the benefits of flashing to S65? does this remove all the GAY Cingular lock features on the phone... I currently own a CT66, and had a S66 for about a couple weeks 4 months back but coudln't get it to work with my AT&T sim card and didn't like the fact that CINGULAR restricted the customizable features that Siemens' manual says you can change. Any details on what the new bootcode allows you to do or not do on the phone would be awesome!

Posted by: ant-dizzle

One quick question. When you change the bootcore to S65, can you just run an updater, or is it necessary to do a fullflash? If you can just update it, does it leave your files and settings intact? (For example, I heard that with updates Cingular AIM won't work anymore and GPRS settings are erased.)

Posted by: IndyMCSE

weeze-dog, Could you please post links to all the software needed. The Winswup, english firmware, etc?

Posted by: ant-dizzle

I tried switching phone models as described, but every time I try I get the message "Lost Connection to Phone," then I have to disconnect and reconnect to try again. Same with Siemens MPM backup. I'm using the same exact cable and methods as the OP, any ideas?

Posted by: cryogenic

and still no response to the posters asking what exactly the point of flashing to an S65 is... I know the firmware is newer, but what advantages does it offer to going to the S65 firmware?

Apparently there are a few bug fixes (hopefully smoother video playback for "Premium" quality videos), the video camera is extended to 1:30, and you can dump all the Cingular crap and unlock crippled features like network selection. Those are my main reasons.

Posted by: Mr. Kobayashi

Can someone PLEASE post a link to the x65flasher used in this changing bootcore to S65 scenario?

As posted previously, I can find only the x65flasher R1.055 version online which does not have any advanced button on its interface and clearly posts in its readme file that it cannot write to bootcore. This is base step the first poster on this thread explains is necessary, but where can we find the flasher version the can do this??

I need new firmware!

Posted by: cryogenic

I have an S66 coming very soon (hopefully today!) and am looking for the very same thing. It's a Cingular-branded version so of course it has Cingular's firmware which is horribly out-of-date in comparison to the S65. I'll definitely be looking to do the same thing as many other people here seem to be wanting to do.

Posted by: zero2hero

hey guys im going to pick up a siemens sl65 today and am on the rogers network in canada ... any idea if it supports 850mhz band and if not how i can get it to?

Posted by: cryogenic

S65 does not support 850Mhz, only the S66 does... it's a hardware thing so there's no way to make an S65 support 850 and no way to make an S66 support 900Mhz.

Posted by: zero2hero

sorry i meant sl 65.. the slider black phone... and i know its hte wrong forum, but do you know if the samsung d500 does?

i just sold my old beat up SE p800 and am lookin for a new handset... its gotta be an eye-catcher with a different design (block or flip wont cut it)... my budget is around $350... so all those nicer nokias or some of the new SE's are out of my range...

Posted by: chop

same thing with sl65 i think.
Dont know about d500

Posted by: cryogenic

Samsung D500? it's 900/1800/1900 and there is no variant with the 850 band.

Posted by: cryogenic

oddly, I've never gotten this trick to work at all... I always get an error msg in x65flasher no matter what version I use. I use the correct com port and everything, tried various speeds, still no go. I connect the cable, turn the phone off, set up x65flasher, press connect, press the red button on the phone and a dialog comes up asking what I want to do... I choose "generate boot password" as it's the only option that does anything. Then hit the red button again, phone comes up in service mode and x65 says "starting service mode" then errors out with "no answer from BFC ping". I'm not sure what else to try here. Any ideas?

Posted by: ant-dizzle

You know, the same thing happens to me, but when I try "Boot Password - ********" that does the same thing. I was told on a Siemens forum that the data cables were designed for USB 2.0 ports. I have yet to try it on a computer with USB 2.0 ports.

Posted by: cryogenic

my computer has USB 2.0, so that's not the issue... I'm not sure what the issue could be, in all honesty. It's frustrating as all holy heck.

Posted by: urhash

Can someone tell me what version of x65flasher I'm supposed to use?

Posted by: djbobbless

month old, but im also intrested and when you flash the firmware does it lose the 850mhz band? I really need it badly.

No, the frequencies the phone uses is based on the hardware and not the firmware.

Posted by: djbobbless

Thanks for the heads up!

Posted by: artfuldodger73

Can someone PLEASE post a link to x65Flasher? Or are those posts being removed...??!?!?!

I tried to google for it and got loads of german and russian sites.

Posted by: artfuldodger73

Ok ok.... I FINALLY found a site with x65flasher v1.072. It is saved as a .rar file.

Hope that your russian is good!

So I figured out the bootcore change but cannot seem to get the WinSwup flash to work. I DL the versions from siemensmania and try and flash the phone with them with the software involved/included but I keep getting a com port speed problem. I have used three different computers, two laptops and a desktop and cannot get this software to work. It will either have the Ack EOT error or simply after changing speeds in the serial configuration an error message will read "speed not available on com port."
*I am unware how to change firmware with x65 flasher, if possible with WinSwup etc.

Can someone please help with this flashing problem? I am quite frustrated coming this far with the bootcore change and not being able to get the S65 Firmware.

thanks-

Posted by: Mr. Kobayashi

Finally figured out the Winswup problem I was experiencing. Apparently this is quite an unstable programme and you need to play around with the power button a few different ways for it to work properly.

But the scenario did work and I upgraded to Siemens official firmware after the winswup change. I am glad that headache is over-

Posted by: Mr. Kobayashi

this site helps btw if anyone is still interested-
http://forum.siemenspower.de/thread...hilight=winswup

Posted by: ant-dizzle

Thanks, Mr. K. I decided to give it another try and things are working out this time. What variant did you use?

Posted by: Mr. Kobayashi

I have the A950 variant with firmware 50. I just DL'd it from the http://www.siemensmania.cz/firmware.php (it's the one that has the red S and 50)

I figured this was easier than trying to guess on the siemens website. Works great-

Posted by: ant-dizzle

Thanks. I updated successfully to 43. 50 is next, if it ever finishes downloading...

Quick questions, though. I want to change the soft key from "New MMS" to something else. Have you figured out how to do that? Second, is the speed dial function gone?

Posted by: Mr. Kobayashi

yeah i don't think you can change the new mms soft key. Have not been able to at least. Also it appears the " speakerphone" soft key while on a call has now been replaced by "handsfree." I cannot seem to find the "speakerphone" option available on a call now, which suks.

Also I have seemed to have lost four of my menu icons?

Posted by: ant-dizzle

Yeah, the speakerphone button did change, but it'll still activate speakerphone if you press it during a call (with confirmation, which sucks). It'll probably activate a bluetooth headset too, I'm guessing they just wanted some uniformity.

And the menu icons can be fixed fairly easily. Go here: http://nlo.gsmhosting.net/tweaking/icons.php
and follow his instructions. Apparently, you can tweak it and install your own custom icons as well. It also looks like it could be done over Bluetooth. I'll try it a little later. Let me know if the links don't work, I downloaded this months ago and saved the bookmark.

I only have one other issue. I want me menu to be totally rid of Cingular's crap (the MEdia Mall and other two links are still there, even though they don't work). Any ideas?

Posted by: ant-dizzle

I replaced the icons (and they look really nice), but some of the menu options don't work. For example, I know when I click Setup it should go to the settings menu, but it claims an xml file wasn't found. I'll play around with it, hopefully I can get something to work.

EDIT: When copying the files to your phone, DO NOT delete anything from your phone's /Config/japp/FlexMenu folder, just copy the files over and replace all. Otherwise things won't work right (as they didn't for me). Everything is awesome now.

Posted by: Mr. Kobayashi

yeah figured out the menu icons things @ http://www.s65.info/ . It's "auf Deutsch" but it is easy to navigate by going to downloads. Tons of free icons and also some free themes as well and a link to another site with like 100 free themes (none of which would've worked with the S66 shite firmware.)

But with the s65 menu icons most/all do not have any of the cingular menu shortcuts. Sounds like you've sorted this out already but just follow same steps as your familiar with (config/japp/flexmenu) if your interested in some more icons. Themes are super easy to install (just copy file into themes folder via mpm)

It's nice to finally tweak ones phone properly.

Posted by: OzzieGT

I keep getting a screen asking me which boot method I want to use. What do I do here???

EDIT: OK i got past that part, but when I am doing the backup I am getting a lot of timeout messages...is this normal?

Posted by: OzzieGT

So I updated the software but there are some issues. The main menu in the phone isn't right anymore...some of the menu items have just a plain folder icon. The cingular branding isn't gone either at startup and shutdown. Also, I can't seem to get MPM to recognize that the phone is connected anymore either. It was working fine before I updated the firmware. Any suggestions?

UPDATE: I think it's the cable I am using...it's a generic cable. It works fine with v34 of my S66 firmware but after I upgraded to S65 v58 the MPM won't recognize the phone anymore. So I have reverted until I get a new cable (can't fix the icons without MPM).

Another update: I updated the icons with the new ones in the above link and it works fine on my S66 with v34! The icons are correct and they open the right items! I guess I could upgrade back to S65 v58 at this point, but I still won't be able to back up my information without a proper cable...so I am going to wait till I get a cable that works.

update again: Actually it looks like the settings menu is wrong...it seems to be pointing to a different settings menu which doesn't have all the options (like set ringtones, etc.)

Posted by: ant-dizzle

To solve the icon issue, check out www.s65.info for new icon sets (and a copy of the originals) and follow their directions to the letter (if they're in another language, just post back here and I'll instruct you). I did, and the menu totally changed, it's more like the S46 I had and loved way back on AT&T. The settings menu and everything did change, as did many other menus. But things are fairly easy to get used to, as all the same stuff is still there, just probably named slightly differently. And you lose the speed dial option that was set to hotkey 5, which kinda sucks. But yeah, go ahead and update to v58, I've had no problems with it so far in the past two-three weeks or so. Enough rambling, Any other questions feel free to ask.

Posted by: jeffsui

Does this work with a USB data cable or do you need a serial one???? (thanks)

Well I could no longer figure out how to set my ringtones with the new icon set so that is why I switched back. I am guessing I could probably compare the main.fs from both versions and combine them together to get the custom experience I want, so I will do that once I have a better cable. (My current cable works fine with v34 but once I upgrade to v58 MPM no longer recognizes the phone. I also can't upgrade to S66 v54 from siemens's website with my current cable)

Posted by: kdubin

so i feel like an idiot asking this, but can someone please send me a link to a proper cable to get on ebay? i know to look for a dca-510, although they all appear to be generic. i cant seem to find an original siemens. Thanks!

Posted by: ant-dizzle

It doesn't appear to make a difference. I did mine with a generic cable. As long as it's designed for the x65 series and up I think you should be okay.

Posted by: kdubin

I have done a fair amount of research on this site and some others and still cannot seem to get my s66 flashed to an s65. I have the correct com port and speed in x65 flasher. When my phone is plugged in and i turn it on, a "boot menu" comes up, prompting me to generate a boot password. After this is done, a message appears telling me that "my phone is ready to be flashed." The problem is that x65 flasher never allows me to do any of the "advanced" functions. All of the buttons are greyed out except for the "connect" button, which just loops me back to the boot menu. The only difference now is that my boot passwrod is listed. I've even tried the x65 OD program but that gives me an error message when i try to run it. Is there a problem with my x65 flasher version? (v 1.072). Is my cable problematic?

Can someone PLEASE respond to me? I'm pretty sure I have successfully flashed my s66 to s65 fw43, although i thought this would enable me to program each key. the only one i can use as a hotkey is "5." is this normal? shouldnt the hotkeys be programmable after the flash? also, with my previous firmware version, the missed calls and voicemal symbol would show up by the right softkey. now they show up by the left softkey, so i cannot access my menu without checking my voicemal first. is there a way to change this? please answer. nobody seems to be answering my posts anymore.

Why don't you just middle click on joystick to take you to menu?

I'm not sure why it's not working for you. All my keys are programmable. I'm running fw v58.
- You press desired key#, then press right soft key to initiate shortcut.
At that time left soft key becomes"Change" button. You press that and select any other shortcut.

What do you get when you try that?

I have FW43 and it does the same thing. I'm pretty sure it's just a firmware thing, try flashing newer firmware.

It seems that once a key is programmed, there is no way to use the phone keypad to re-program the key. The key "5" was a "speed-dial" function when you got the phone from Cingular. The updated firmware does not seem to support that function, leaving the "5" unassigned.

Now, to program the keys, you can use a program on your PC with the phone connected via cable. I can't remember off hand what the program is called, but I've used at least two different methods, one was easier than the other, and both worked fine. These programs also allow you to assign the function of the side keys and joystick, as well as the 0-9,*,# keys. I'm sure you can find all the info you need with the help of these forums and google.

FYI, I am using firmware 58 with my S66 thinking it's an S65.

EdGrimley

Posted by: kdubin

Bokito, the reason I can't just click the joystick for the menu is because Cingular had programmed that to access the browser directly. The only key that is programmable is the "5" key, which I had to set to "menu" so I could access it when I wasn't getting a signal. All the other keys are pre-programmed to another random functioned deemed important by cingular. I have upgraded to fw58 and have the same problem.

goldhead, does this have anything to do with one of Weeze-Dog's earlier posts (on page 1 of this post) about not being able to completely unlock his phone until he reverted back to his s66 fw34 and then unlocked it before going back to the s65 version?

Posted by: kdubin

I was finally able to completely unlock my phone using EEPROM and a key changing program, so now i am happy. thank you everyone for all your help. i would still like to get v_klay working right so i can further modify my phone bu that can wait now.

If one flashes their S66 to the S65 firmware...is it my understanding that it will convert it to the S65 unbranded phone but still maintain the 850 band?

That is correct. But then you can always make a backup using x65 flasher,
and if you find it is not operating properly, you have a chance to revert back.

If you are looking for super signal reception, this phone doesn’t deliver on 850.
I used my underground garage as a test and with Nokia 6170b or SE S710a or Moto V635
I have one signal bar and I can make a call, but with S66 i get no reception

Posted by: goldhead

How did you guys get the WinSwup working? When I press configure serial it always freezes. And when check the first skip, it still doesn't work.

That's strange, because I get a better signal on 850 than anyone of my Cingular friends. 3-4 bars when others have 1-2, and I can always make and receive calls.

1. Do you have original Siemens DCA-510 cable?
2. If WinSwup is not setup for correct com port, it will never detect your phone.

Try installing cable to a different USB port and verify in device manager which com port is using.

1. No, I do not have the original cable, but so far I have managed to do almost anything with my generic cable. But I realize that this might be the problem why WinSwup doesn't work.
I have FW43 at the moment and every time I want to connect to SiMoCo I first have to run od.exe. I guess that is the problem of the cable too.
2. I cannot setup WinSwup, because every time I press Serial Config, the PC freezes.

One more thing. Could anyone provide me with their phone fullflash backup from x65flasher containing FW58cz? That seems to be the only way for me to upgrade firmware.
If someone is willing, please zip the file and host it here: http://rapidshare.de/
Thanks.

1. Having non Siemens cable could cause WinSwup to freeze on start.
You should troubleshoot that further. Try changing current COM port assigned to your USB cable.
Also, try running in windows compatibly mode. Try different PC.

2. Running od.exe before starting SimoCo is not cable related.
od.exe(open directory) when executed allows temporary read/write access to "Config" folder on your phone.

3.There is a V_klay patch that you can apply that will permanently open full read/write access to CONFIG directory.
It makes phone modding so much more fun. Especially trying different icon sets, etc.
I’ve attached V_Klay file should you decide to try it.
