i just sold my pda and i'm going to sell my v300 to get a smartphone that will cover my basic needs from a pda and my phone needs in one unit.
right now i'm leaning towards getting a smt5600, but i'm also considering the sp3i and the mpx220. i've noticed that a lot of the people here have the mpx220 over the smt5600, but i'm not seeing much as to why.
what are the high and low points of each? if you would recomend another phone, which one and why?

I was in your shoes last week. I planned on the A-Vox, but got an unbelievable deal on the Moto. I'm happy with this phone, but cannot compare it to the other, other than what I read. I like the flip, I had a SE T637 and was used to "bar" phone and the dust problem under the screen. I have no complaints with this phone except the BT Dialing. I stuck in a 1 gig minisd card and uploaded tons of mp3, movies and pics, set up GMail acct. My first Smarthone and I will have nothing but now.

I'll start by saying that I know nothing about the sp3i.

With that said, there are a few users here that have both and their opinions are mixed. If you would have posted a couple of weeks ago, the majority of your responses would have been SMT5600. Out of the box, the SMT does not really have any major issues. The MPx220 on the other hand did. Cingular/AT&T are working on a final ROM with Motorola to get all the bugs fixed. In the last 2 weeks, we've had the oppertunity to download and use ROMs that are still considered "beta". Last week we got version 1.39 and this week we got version 1.43. I have done the progressive upgrades and I am currently using the Cingular 1.43 version and I have to say that my phone has greatly improved from "stock" form.

My Opinion: MPx220 (w/new ROM)

would either one of the smt5600 or mpx220 be easier to set up and use with my current t-mobile account?

Neither one should give you problems as long as they are unlocked.

I haven't tried any other Smartphones but the MPX-220 is great. And the directional pad (the arrow buttons) is huge and great for games! I play Super Mario 3 on the NES emulator, put the screen in landscape, and hold the phone side ways like its a real game console control pad. The sound quality through a stereo headset is high like quality MP3 players.

People complain that the ear piece volume is too low. I have found it to be lower than some other phones but I find it to be high enough (I have an asian phone/ROM).

I just picked up my unlocked MPX220 and signed a new Tmobile contract (ported from Cingular) yesterday.

1st impression of mpx220: phone works great out of the box. Firmware out of the box is 1.30. Fairly good reception, very nice UI. Volumn has not been a problem, even w/o the firmware upgrade, and with the plastic still covering the ear hole. Camera quality sucks (again, plastic still on the phone in case I'd like to return this phone).

So far no problems, Tmobile works great on this phone despite being Cingular branded.
