Mapopolis vs. TomTom GPS Navagation for Treo 650?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Alpha Phoenix

I am interested in purchasing the Seidio G2500M GPS (Mapopolis + Bluetooth) Car Kit for Treo 650 (http://store.everythingtreo.com/con.../10-68--197.htm) or the TomTom Navigator 2004 + GPS (Wired) for Treo 650 (http://store.everythingtreo.com/con.../10-41--262.htm) and I'd like input on which you guys think is better and why.

Here is some more detailed reading on both:
http://www.mobileplanet.com/product...31385&listing=1

http://tomtom.com/products/product....=103&Language=4
http://tomtom.com/products/product....=104&Language=4

Now mind you, I don't want to have wires running all over my car, I want something that I can hardwire in and just put my Treo in the cradle and it will charge as well as be in a good position to display the maps/directions. I want a GPS Navagation System which is not just software based, but has live real time tracking because I have a horrible sense of direction and I need something that will know my location and tell me as a turn is coming up as well as automatically remap if I miss my turn/exit without me having to manually replot.

I purchased the TomTom Navigator 2004 BLUETOOTH. There are no wires and it works GREAT! It never misses a beat and the GPS tracking device is smaller than a deck of cards. You can use the car charger or the Home charger and THERE ARE NO WIRES! The Bluetooth works like a charm and the nav system shows up on the palm screen clear as a bell. I strongly recommend you go the the TOMTOM web sit and check it out. Good Luck!

GPS question:

What happens when you are using the GPS and you get a phone call?

Does the phone application take precedence?
Does the GPS software continue to run in the background?
Does is stop giving voice directions during a call?

Posted by: hondatwo

When a phone call comes in the program will discontinue BUT you can sign back in to the program in a matter of seconds and it will return to the place you left off. All of the Units are like this.

I have TomTom 2004 and mapopolis. IMO mapopolis sucks, it takes forever to generate a route, the 3d navigation is useless, and the voice sounds robotic. TomTom however is great.. I love it and it is my fav app for the treo 650. I use it with the Holux Bluetooth GPS i got new for only 80 bux and its the same one PalmOne sells with the GPS bundle.

Posted by: lewisl77

I also have both mapopolis and tomtom. By far, tomtom is the best for the 650. Routes generate in seconds, not minutes like mapopolis. Also, no problems with resets, which occurs frequently with mapopolis. The new version of tomtom, tomtom navigator 5 will have even more features which will make it the best choice for the 650. It should be out on June 18th.

Are you absolutely sure about that release date? Will it come with the car kit (ie. cable to hardwire it, BPS receiver, bluetooth transmitter, etc...)

Posted by: davisdog

release date is either June 15th or 18th depending on who you talk to.

should be available as a software package (for those that already have a receiver) or with an optional GPS Receiver (BT or wired).

free upgrade for those that have bought Navigator 2004 within 60 days of the release (otherwise the upgrade is available for a fee to existing users)

I posted an in-depth comparison of TomTom and Mapopolis on my Blog: http://twelveblackcodemonkeys.com/g...s_navc ard.htm

Hello can anyone help how to upload navigation on my treo i heard that tom tom is the best navigation,is it easy to upload?Pls help me step by step.I really appreciate. Thanks

Posted by: Alpha Phoenix

It's not freeware. You actually have to buy the software and the satillite receiver. Once you pop in the CD-Rom's you'll automatically be able to install and upload to your PDA whichever maps you choose.

Posted by: vazn_bon3

how much it would be cost to me?is it easy to upload on my treo 650?

Posted by: dvdmon

Amazon sells it for $258, which includes the software and the GPS device. You might be able to find it cheaper elsewhere, but you can search for that yourself. As far as easy to install, well, I can only speak to Navigator 2004, not the latest Navigator 5. Navigator 2004 was SOMEWHAT easy to install. I did have some issues, but nothing that was all that difficult. The installation is just not as simple and streightforward as most programs, or maybe there is just something a bit wrong with it, but in the end, you just plough through it and it will work fine.

I would wait and get the Navigator 5 which is now being offered by several different place for about the same price as Navigator 4. It will have all of the updated maps. Otherwise, you will have to pay 50 bucks for the new maps. It does have some issues when installing. It is not as easy as they describe BUT it is a great program and will take you where you want to go with the shortest most accurate route. I LOVE IT!

tomtom's website still says navigator 5 will be available soon. does anyone know when its supposed to be released?

also, can tomtom run solely on an SD card? i don't have much room left on my treo 650's internal memory. thanks

I spoke with the Customer Service Rep at TomTom in Texas CS and he said the USA version of the Navigator 5 upgrade is due out the first or second week of July. They are going to extend the time frame for the free upgrade. It will be about 90 days back for free upgrades. They are going to be flexible since it took longer than expected for the USA upgrade to take place.

As far as the sd card. You can only store the additional maps on the card. The main download must be stores in the RAM.

Posted by: islandsnow

thanks for the update. does anyone who uses tomtom know if they voice prompts actually recite the street names as well? like "turn left onto main st".?

i know mapopolis does. a lot of times when i am in an unfamiliar place and there are two streets coming up, i don't like to hear "turn left 800ft", because frankly i don't really know how far 800ft is especially when i have to think quickly while driving. then i have to look down on the map to see what its talking about.

so does tomtom say the street name out loud?

HERE IS THE EXACT EMAIL I RECEIVED TODAY CONCERNING THE NAV 5 UPDATE:
Navigator 5 is compatible with the Treo 650. We apologize for the delay. We are looking to release a map update mid-July. Once Navigator 5 is released you will receive an e-mail notifying you of the update. Generally if one has purchased the software and activated it within the 90 day time frame of the new software being released, the update is free. If you are outside the 90 day window, the update is $49.00 plus shipping and handling. Please keep in mind this date could be pushed back due to software development.

Kind Regards,

TomTom USA Customer Service

I just got the TT N5 kit from tigerGPS.com yesterday. After going through the hellish installation (WHY DO I HAVE TO DELETE MY TEMP FOLDER TO INSTALL THE MAPS ON SD CARD TOMTOM HOW RETARD YO HAVE TO BE?), I got to say this is a very polish program.

I had a ton of fun taking the wrong route, and let TomTom recauculate the route on the fly. It usually takes 10 seconds or so.

Although I do wish it says "turn left in 50 meters" a tag sooner, becuase it says that when I am 20-30 meters to the turn.

Got it Tomtom navigator 5 installed on my TREO 650 and can't get the voice part working. Everything else is fine! Please help.

Posted by: dvdmon

BWD, I had this problem to and someone from Treo Central helped me out. What you need to do is uninstall everything (delete all the TOMTOM related files too). Then run the install again and install the app, but this time, when it tells you to hotsynch, don't, just click ok or next or whatever, then go and install a map or maps and don't hotsynch when it tells you to, then finally install the voices, but wait until you've installed all the voices to actually DO a hotsynch. At that point everything will get installed with one hotsynch.

I think TomTom has one of the worst install systems I've seen, and this issue with not being able to install the voices isn't documented anywhere, so it's only luck that some other user figured it out.

does TomTom do voice prompts like turn left, turn right etc...

Posted by: the_5abi_guy

In answer to various questions above.

I have a Tom tom 700 Euro version with built in hard drive.

YES... it does give voice prompts, turn left, turn right, keep left, go straight ahead,
in 300 yards take the next exit and then keep right etc.... etc....

No... it does not give you the street name, it will not say turn into "main street"
however, it does give you the next street name in text at the bottom of the screen.

You cannot fully rely on voice prompts, sometimes you need to refer to the screen, to
see the road layout ahead, this is especially important in Europe, where the road layout is much more complex than the north south east west grid system in North America

Can you take the Tom Tom or Mapopolis GPS with you when you fly to another city? In other words, is the GPS receiver hardwired to the car?
Thanks

Posted by: r0guenj

Wirelessly posted (Treo 650: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; PalmSource/hspr-H102; Blazer/4.0) 16;320x320)

not sure about the wired version but the bluetooth one you can take with you. it is battery powered (or am I mixing it with another device). so just make sure you have the maps for the city you are going to.

even the wired one should be easy to take with you (if the power adapter is the same as the one on the BT....just keep one power cord and data connector separate for when you travel)

Posted by: BWD

Thanks Dvdmon, that worked perfectly. I emailed Tomtom with the issue but still didn't get a response from them. Thanks for the info, it was driving me crazy! The software is great but their support is horrible!

No, it doesn't say street names....

that sucks cause mapopolis does. i found that when i am driving in an unfamiliar area, it helps to hear the street name to turn on especially if i'm in a congested area and there are a lot of streets, i can't really tell how far 800ft is compared to 600ft (upcoming street or next street)...etc... of course i could just look down on the device to see what street to turn on but i rather keep my eyes on the road as much as possible.

Agree, it would be a nice feature if it said street names also..on the otherside, I do find the TomTom Display to be much more user friendly (and clearer) when I do need to peak over and confirm the name.

Does TomTom have the new Plus services, so it'll cover traffic jams, etc?

It does, but you have to check the tomtom web site to see if they have coverage for your area - plus you'll incurr gprs charges downloading that info.

Posted by: xynos

I know there's service in my area, and I have unlimited internet service. I thought it was only available on the TomTom Go 300 or 700 series...

In TT5 (on my Treo 650) there is an option to access "TomTom Traffic" from the main menu...this is the Plus service...

I havent tried it yet, but I may give it a shot since they offer a free trial that you can sign up from within the app (basically just use your email address with the password as 'plus' for a free trial)

I also have anunlimited dataplan already (since I have goodlink etc for work)

Posted by: xynos

The Plus has a special, if u were to activate it, the traffic portion will be free until the end of the year. Too bad I didn't do my research, and purchased a TomTom Go 300 instead of the one for palm.
