i got a skii last october...loved it. got the developer's key when it wasn't hard, and downloaded everything i wanted. everything the skii should have anyways -- personalized ringers, weather apps, GOOD games, etc. my camera broke and i had to get a warranty exchange...

before i did this, i came to this forum and asked about gettin a replacement dev. key. i was told that it was a breeze to get a replacement one, all you had to do was email them....

THAT IS NOT THE CASE! what am i gon have to do to get another one? honestly, this skii is worthless without the dev. key! especially after having one, and then not being able to get one. no more ringers, no more weather, no more good games. what am i to do? ANYBODY WITH ANY SUGGESTIONS????? thanks...skrilla

Read the pinned topics on the Developer Forums at the Developer site, they will tell you what to do.

ok ok. i'm wrecking my brain here!!

i already am a software developer because i have a devloper's key from my previous sidekick ii. it says that to get a new key, you must either be a) a software developer and turn in a custom bdle or b) be referred by a software developer for beta-testing...

how do you refer someone? because, couldn't i just refer my new IMEI for the new SKII, as a software developer for my old SKII??

possible to anyone?????? if so, how? cause i can't find out how to refer someone on the developer's site?

THANKS SO MUCH
skrillo

You gotta submit and fill out the Developer Key application (in web form, not fax)

You cannot refer yourself (referral process goes by accounts, not IMEI's). If you put some random name, the referral is invalid. If a Software developer is referring you, they will have submit a referral to Danger.

that was the question. not in GENERAL how do i get a dev. key...i understand the new process. it never says anywhere on the developer's site about how to go about referring someone. that really sucks -- the sidekick ii went from being my favorite phone out on the market...to having me consider gettin rid of it, and gettin something else...

thanks though

Skrilla,

You said you got a dev key when it was easy. At the time, you could email Danger for a new dev. key and get one the same way. It was that easy too.

Don't rag on the people who told you this, they were right, that was the proper process for a long time.

ALL that has changed now. Getting a key has changed, and getting a replacement key has changed. Essentially NOBODY who "had" a dev key will get a replacement until they go through the new system.

Having a key does not make you a developer. NO previous keys/applications/whatnot apply in the new system. Everybody has to reapply. You have to prove you're capable of developing for the device, and then you get a key.

No, you don't refer IMEIs, you refer people. Having a key doesn't mean you're a developer. You have to apply as a developer, and then get a key. The new system is completely automated and if you're not in the new system as a developer, you can't refer other people.

In order to become a "developer" for the phone, you have to submit a program that will load and run on the phone - download the SDK, install it, look at the example code, and write something. This will peove to Danger that you're actually capable of "developing" for the device, and they'll happily give you a key and all the replacements you may ever need.

joe...thanks.

i already knew how to go about getting the key and all. i wasn't ragging on people because of the new system, but the advice i got was not longer than 2 weeks ago. thats how recent i got my warranty phone. i just wish someone had updated me on the key situation before...because i could still get everything on my old phone.

is the code easy enough to "teach yourself"? if i can catch on, thats what i'm gon do. if not, i guess ill jus have to get a new phone.

thanks

according to the pinned topic in this forum, shouldn't everything you already had on your old phone be auto updated to your new phone as long as you have the same sim/account?... I wouldn't know, i don't have a sidekick

Posted by: skrilla

yeah, thatd be nice, wouldn't it? i was crossing my fingers when i changed the sim cards over...but no luck

That's about how long ago the process changed, so it's not like anyone knew to tell you that things were any different. Maybe I'm assuming a lot, but I presume that anyone with a developer key (or at least worried about a replacement key) might check out the forums on the developer site for more timely information.

It's Java, albeit with a non-standard API. It's not hard if you have any programming experience to take any of the sample apps and make it do something semi-useful.

You don't have to submit a polished app for the key application. It doesn't have to be a slick 3-D FPS game or anything - just a program that can be downloaded to the phone to actually *do* something to prove that you have the ability to actually develop for the device.

User data, ringtones, settings, and purchased (Catalog) applications are automatically transferred from one device to another if you get a replacement or upgrade device. All that data is stored on the backend servers and automatically synched to the new device.

Developer-installed applications are not automatically transferred, and developer keys (which are tied to the IMEI of the phone) are not transferred because they wouldn't work on the new device.
