Hi guys!
I have a question for you Nec n840 users. I just got this phone and I didnt get the USB cable with it. I checked ebay with no luck at all. Can anyone direct me to a website from where I can buy the USB cable for this phone? I am from Canada, this help would be great if anyone coule help me with this. Also what format of REAL VOICE RINGTONE does Nec n840 support? I know it doesnt support mp3, but which one does it support and using what software can I convert mp3 files to the format it supports? THanks people for all the help. Quick help would be appreciated. Thanks

data cables i havent a clue, but maybe the same one as the 525? do they not sell them from the nec website directly? as for ringers, the phone supports 3gp vids, which can be set as ringers, so take the ulead soft (came bundled with the HK phones) and choose a random picture, put the 2 together to make a "video ringtone" and off ya go. also, if you have a reg .mpg or something, i use nokia's multimedia converter (a free download once you register in the nokia.com developers section) to convert them into suitable vid ringers too. you just gotta make sure that the final product is <300k or the phone wont take it. cheers

Hey thanks man!
By video ringtones you mean actual video would be playing and all? With real tone music? I dont really care about the videos, I just want like actual voice ringtone, with actual words and all. Little more detailed help would be appreciated as to how to make those kinda ringtones.
THanks man

Posted by: Optic

ya i dont care about video either... Its mainly the ring that matters.... haha
why would i want to look at the video play isntead of answering the phoen =P

I just got this phoen a few days ago and it includes the USB cable.

I would also like to learn how to make these 3gp ring tones by converting mp3 files. I remember i saw a site a while back but i cant find it no more. If anyone sees a tutorial, please post it!

thanks.

I too got this phone a couple of days ago, and so far I love it.

Is there any way to change the interface to make it look a little better? I find that it's a bit blah. Any way to skin it or theme it a la Motorola?

For those of you who have this phone, what kind of cases are you using (if at all)? I've been trying to find one locally or on ebay, but have turned up nothing.

As far as setting up MMS/SMS, there were a bunch of pre-configured settings already on my phone...is it okay to wipe them out and set up a Rogers specific one (Rogers being my provider)?

Thanks!

just played around with it a little bit more. yap, you can convert mp3s to the proper ringers. here's how i did it: take your mp3, shorten the clip using whatever mp3 cutter you have, and run it thru Nokia Multimedia Converter with the default .Amr 12.2kbps bit rate and it will turn out the way you need. one thing i noticed though; when i cut the mp3, i also turned down the volume to make it more quiet. if i leave it normal, it sounds horribly distorted once on the phone. ... i think that should do it...

NEC offers a few different color schemes/patterns for the main menu, but there's not much in the way of theming it out; one thing i loved about the s60 os. i've yet to find a case for it as well and have pretty much given up trying... for the mms/sms/wap stuffs, sure; go ahead and delete them. as long as you dont thin you'll ever go to any of those countries, they wont do you any good. you can probably just add a new rogers one to the list already in there though? cheers

That's what I thought about video ringtones before, but it kinda grows on you after awhile. I got a couple of hotties dancing in a video on my phone.. haha... There's a PDF file showing you how to make your own 3GP ringtones when you install the ULEAD softward from the CD.

Aighty. I ordered my USB cable and should be coming soon. I downloaded some 3GP Video convertor or something and I think it converts videos as well as ringtones. So I am gonna try after that. I can videos as well, not really a big deal for me, but if you could then why not. I have the nokia multimedia convertor or whatever, but dont really know how to use it though.

Hey guys!
I need some help again. Ok so the cable is here, I downloaded some things including Memory Editor and GPRS Wizard. Phone is connected to the computer and everything. My question is what do I use to put files to my phone and from my phone to the computer. Like for Nokia you could open that one folder and drag and drop whatever you wanted on your phone. What do I use for this one? Memory Editor? But it only supports like .mdf files or something. I think there should be another program that I need to download like Motorola's MPT Tools and Nokias PC Suite. Guys please help me real quick.
Thanks

Posted by: phone_fanatic

Ok...nvm I figured that out. But I got another one lol. Once I converted these couple songs to 3gp or whatever and put it on my phone. The Volume is reallly low. I mean you can hear it, but its really bad. So is there any way I can change that or am I SOL?
Thanks

Posted by: phone_fanatic

Ok i am finding this really annoying.
First
I cant seem to figure out how to transfer the pics I took with my phone to the computer.

Second
Is it possible to download stuff like wallpapers, ringtones etc to the SD card instead of using the phone memory? If so, how? Cauz I downloaded bunch of stuff and it got downloaded in the phone's memory itself and not the memory card.

Please if someone can help me with these. Any help is apreciated.
Thanks

Posted by: jerksmile

i send pics from the phone to comp either w IR or transfer them from to the card first and then pull them from there. if you download things, it will save them automatically to the download file. you can transfer them to the mem card from there.

Ok cool. Ic just a long a process. I get it I think.
Thanks

thanks for your help in the other n840 thread.

I tried to make an animated gif thats 240x207 and set it for the menu background but when you are choosing a menu background, it will not let you go out of the backgrounds directory. and i also notice you cannot copy any files INTO the background directory.

how did you do it?

Posted by: xumdeo

selecting ur own manu background will automatically divert you to the "background/default" directory by default
what u have to do is to press "CLR" (clear button, between dial and hangup buttons) that will bring u up one level in the phone directory, in that way, u can select ur own gif (e.g. under the downloads folder)

i'm not sure if moving gif will work as manu background, but for gif still will work for sure

Posted by: acl88

just tried it, but since it is an animated gif, it doesnt' recognize the file as being in the directory.. (at least thats what i think)

THANKS FOR THE HELP! your reply is faster than NEC tech support!!

any sites to download games for this phone? im looking for the 3d-tennis that NEC loads on the n830

1. N840 downloads. plz refer to this thread http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=649414

2. animated gif would not work as manu wallpaper (u can however set that as standby screen wallpaper, only that it won't loop itself, u'll know what i mean once u tried it). only non-animated gif can be set as manu wallpaper

yeah i still get the same thing, cannot be saved.

BTW, i just purchased a 512mb 60x ATP miniSD card and can positively report the following:

Music:
MP3's of 320kb/s plays back, no problem.
you can set multiple directories for music, so you can organize them by artist/genere, whatever you specify
Playlist can only be a max of 30 songs, and you can only have 1 playlist.

Pictures:
Full Size 1600x1200 pictures take on average, 1 second LESS, than previous (this is pretty good) so each photo takes around 3-4seconds to save the picture, on average, opposed to the 5 seconds per shot before.
Picture Preview, pictures seem to load up quickly on the 3x3 grid (but they did on the stock sandisk), picture read times are about 4-5 seconds when scrolling picture-to-picture (maybe a bit shorter, but not by much)

This makes sense as most SD/miniSD can be read rather quickly, but addressing is constrained by the speedrating of the card.

all 512mb can be addressed fine.

Here is a site with some n840 games. (some dont work well, some work well) There are 2 tools also.
One is the JAD maker, once you downloaded the JAR files, you need to make a JAD file to accompany it. It is very easy to use.

The second program is the Java uploader. All you need to do in this program is to set up the right port your phone is on (see Memory editor for the right COM port). Then you can just pick the JAD/JAR file pairs and upload it to your phone. Once its been uploaded, your phone will show a screen asking if you want to install the software. Just say yes. Good luck...

the N840 takes great outdoor pictures. To me, it almost look as if it came from a digicam. The same can't be said for the indoor pictures though.
