I am getting this phone later today from my local Cingular store and cant wait.

I want to set up a POP3 email account on it (Gmail)...

To do this, do i have to get a data plan? if i do i think i have to get a higher one than i thought i would.

Also what data plans do some of you use?

I think you can set up Media Works to get your gmail. It's only 20 bucks per month for unlimited access. It does not allow you to download software from the internet but if you want to just get your email and access their sites it's a hell of a deal. Phone customer service and ask them about it. I am on Rogers in Canada but was looking into a north american plan from cingular and ran across the info.

yup, i got the media works plan for 19.99, i get 3 mb data transfer plus a certain number of sms and mms messages... and my pop3 account is set up and works, but i think i can download applications with that plan if i dont go above my data limit, but that is something i will try later on.

I have another question, how can i check how much of my data limit i have used so far. The store said there was a way, but he was unsure. Does anyone know?

Also, i thought i read that the max miniSD card size was 256, but i have heard other susing 512 and even 1 gig (if they can find a card) what sizes have you all been able to use?

thanks - so far this phone is awesome... thoug i have been hitting the cancel button some times i dont mean too, becuase i think it is a different button...

great thanks, any word on the how to figure out how much data i was downloaded so far?

Start >internet explorer > menu > 6 > memory > history

Scroll to History and hit "clear" at the time of month you want it reset
Hope that helps

oh i see... i wasnt sure if that was it or not... does that count data transferred via my Xpress mail account i have set up (pop3)

thanks for the help...

also, with the Media Works plan (since it is not unlimited anymore) do i get charged for data transfer to/from my phone via bluetooth/usb cable?

i have heard that they used too, un sure if they still are or not... i dont have my papers with me anymore so i am wondering if anyone here knows for sure... thanks

nevermind about the transfer rates for BT or usb cable, they dont charge, i dont know where i heard it but it was wrong...

how do you set up a pop mail account? i bought the phone from Cingular and i think they crippled it somehow because i can't set up my account like the manual says. thanks

Posted by: marshmeli

i use the Xpress mail option in the Messages screen... when u first run it, it will guide you through... u will have to download an application to your computer that pushes the mail to you phone (like a blackberry)...

I got this phone two days ago. Pop setup is easy. You just go to messaging and hit menu. You follow logical prompts to setup and it works great. Don't get the media package unless you do a lot of instant messaging. Cingular offers an unlimited data plan for 20 bucks (not media works). With internet and pop mail, you don't need anything else. I sent pictures etc through my pop account. Can't wait for a windows mobile phone with quicker data capabilities to come out.

Please advise:

I have a 5600 with Cingular MediaNet Unlimited and I would like to use the Smartphone’s “messaging” utility to check my POP email (Comcast)automatically. To get it to do so, I must select “The Internet” as the network choice in the account setup. It won’t work when using the “WAP” setting.

My question: Will I be billed extra because I am using the Internet as my network setting instead of WAP?

I’m new to Cingular and to data plans in general, and frankly all I’ve read about Cingular’s data and connection rules confuses me even more. I know text and MMS are not included in my MediaNet Unlimited plan, and that data over the WAP network IS included. But what about this “internet” setting? Is this its own separate category or does it just plain old WAP data?

Thanks in advance for any light anyone can shed on this matter!

I have been trying to set up POP mail on my 5600 for 2 weeks now to no avail. I have spoken to cingular twice and gone through the settings with the techs there. They say it should work. I have checked my settings thoroughly and I can make them work in Outlook express on my computer and I can make them work on a Treo, but not on my 5600. I even checked with our exchange admin and the server is receiving no connection requests when I try to connect. Has anyone run across this problem? Is there a magic setting at cingular that they forgot to turn on? (Btw- the screwed up my voice mail when they set it up and forgot to turn on text messaging for my account.) I have the unlimited Media Net and the browsing seems to work fine. HELP!

When I got my phone lastweek. The guys at cingular said I had to use the pda plan thats 39.99 a month. They said the Media net plan doesnt work on this phone. How much is it for unlimited Media plan?

Hey, i cant set up pop on my phone either. :-( One of you said to go to start, messaging, then menu and there is no menu. Mine reads 1 text messages 2 outlook 3 bell 4 eat 5 mms 6 personal, 7 sbc and then select on bottom left button but no right button.

I also tried sending the information as a text message when setting the phone up from the microsoft site but it wouldnt install right or something. Grr just wanna check my email, with a dedicated app. Going through webmail is a total pain and doesnt work very well.
