Thinking About Switching to Treo 650 - Advice From Experienced Users???

I am thinking about switching to the Treo 650 with Cingular and I wonder if some of you folks who have used it for awhile would mind giving me your advice.
I am a PDA/converged device junkie (aren't we all here??!!) and I have owned almost all of them at one point or another. I am pretty demanding in quality and performance, particularily with a converged device. I owned the Treo 600 when they first came out and, after exchanging it several times, gave up on the Treo. I was even getting mine directly from a Palm Cafe and they had no better luck in getting a stable unit than anyone else.
I am currently using a SE p910a (after getting rid of the PDA2K) with an old ATTWS plan. I actually have a good plan (1000 anytime, free nights @ 39.99). My kids are with Verizon though and I want to switch them to Cingular as Verizon has poor coverage in the mountains where I live. I am frustrated with the lack of apps for the p910.
I have read the posts here about the Treo issues with volume and resetting, etc. Would you buy your 650 again? Is it worth the headaches? Are most of you having to return multiple units to find one that is stable? Is the unlocked version experiencing more issues that the branded units? Is flashing the ROM fairly painless?
I would really appreciate your input! I am leery of the Treo's quality but there really is something about that device that makes you want to come back to it! Either I get the Treo or go with the Motorola Razr and carry a seperate PDA.

Well if you want lots of apps, you will not be dissapointed. It is insane the ammount of apps there are for this thing.

For me the volume issue was easily fixed by upgrading to Firmware 1.23. As far as resets, I do not get any random resets at all, ever. Meaning I can always pin down the offending (poorly written) app and un-install it (#*377 at the phone screen will tell you what you last reset was caused by). Up to yesterday my Treo had not reset in weeks (ChitChat Lite caused it to reset yesterday).

What Headaches? But, even if it was causing headaches: Hell F'n Ya.

Mine is the Unlocked version, and is very stable.

It was Very simple. Download it, copy it to a SD card, put that card in your Treo, it does everything from there.

well... i have basically used the treo 180, 270, 600, and now the 650... to tell if you want app there is tons of them for you to look for... i use this phone to watch my naruto and other anime shows while at work during work... listen to music at work... do email etc... reset once in a while i will get it... only problem i really have is the speaker volume is low when i put on speaker mode... but that can be fixed with the new firm ware but just too lazy to do it... if i had a second chance if i were to buy the 650 again?... **** right i would.. its 4 times better than my treo 600... would never go back... should never of hesitated in the frist place when the treo 650 first came out...

I have had the Unlocked 650 for a while now. It's the best phone I have ever had and I have had loads..
Only gripes are the occasional reset and the volume. Where is the upgrade I read about above? I have a one gig card with all files and pics I use regually, I dont take my laptop any more.
Would I buy again, Yes....now my wife wants one and she only just got a sidekick.
Please send firmware details for volume to

I made the switch from the P910i to the T650 for the exact reason that you are considering the switch: lack of applications for UIQ.
I am now in app heaven with the palm OS. I also find the Treo more pleasant to use with its one-handed operation and easier access to the qwerty board. In short, I don't miss anything about the P910i, so I say go for it! Havn't had any quality issues with the Treo either...

We just got a 650 last week. We went with Cingular for 2 reasons. 1.) EDGE technology. It really is ISDN speeds. Used it as a modem for the laptop and it really rocks. 2.) In North Carolina, Verizon's eval period is 15 days and Cingular's is 30 days. With all the reported problems over on TreoCentral (http://discussion.treocentral.com/f...aysprune=&f=70), we wanted to be able to evaluate without pressure. So far the results are mixed.

Thanks for the input! I am a thinkin' that I will give a try. I have 30 days to try it out with Cingular and if it doesn't work out than I will return it and get something else.
I stopped using the p910a and now I am carrying a SE T616 and an HP 4315 Pocket Pc. I can tell you this is a royal pain in the butt - to find a phone number I have to go into the PDA and look it up and then dial from the cell. I remember the 600 being super simple to dial from. Lots of apps for WM though! I own software for every PDA OS out there!
I'll flash the ROM and be really careful as to what is installed and maybe all will be okay!
I am interested in HalM's trial of the 650 - keep us posted as to your results?
Heading over to eBay to put the p910 up for auction - thank god for eBay!
