Plz help: squares appears instead of apostrophes in my Word/PDF's documents

I don't know what happened, but a few months ago I noticed all the apostrophes (or possible any other symbols) were replaced by a square character (something like □) in my PDFs. I thought it was just a problem with the PDF but now when I opened up a Word document with QuickWord and the same thing happened.
Anybody know what caused this and know how I can fix this?
