can I go straight from my Cingular 650 which has the 1.05 firmware to the 1.21 firmware w/o having to do anything special?

Yes!

Quite a few people did that, some went from 1.05 to 1.23. I do not even remember what I had, I think I had the 1.05. I have an unlock Treo 650 from PalmOne and it was easily done. I did have problem customizing the ROM but then I did not spend too much time on the project.

I would suggest you go directly to 1.23 instead of 1.21 as 1.23 seems to be a new film ware and do not have the search Newwork issue.

Unbranded, I believe. I saved a copy of the FW1.05 just in case I needed it. So far the 1.23 is working fine.
