I have searched for an answer here but can't seem to find one.

I am trying to upgrade my s56 (unlocked, Cingular branded).

I run the firmware update program and it finds the phone just fine (using a generic USB cable that it seems others have reported success with).

At that point, the phone powers down (which I understand is normal), but then the process stops and the update program reports that it can't find the phone anymore! The phone won't turn back on until I exit the updater program.

The sync software seems to work fine with the phone to sync and transfer data, I just can't get the update to work.

Any ideas? If not, anyone know of a place I could send my phone to be updated? Would love to be able to just take it somewhere in Chicago..

When the phone powers down, the Updater should be prompting you to press the phone's power button.
If you wait until the phone has completely shutdown, and give the power button about a 1/2-second press, the Updater will find the phone and the firmware update should continue. The phone will NOT appear to power on though: you will not get the backlight, nor anything on the display at all. This is normal.

Give it another shot, you're very close and it sounds like it should work for you.

The update software finds the phone, shuts it off and then can't find it.
I tried the suggestion to hit power for a second and a half once it was off to no avail.
Any other ideas?

remove battery.. wait 2-5 seconds.. slap battery back in..

immediately try the "start" procedure (hit the button on PC, then do the power on for 1 second hit when prompted to..)..

Corupted my file need good S56 eeprom dump.
