Decisions, Decisions... Father's Day related: PalmTreo 650 vs Blackberry 7100g

Ok, so my mom and I are trying to decide on an organizer for my dad. He was recently diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and needs something to organize all his appointments with doctors, etc. I came up with the idea of getting him a pda, but I would hate for him to have to lug around a second device in his pockets around work. Since he on his feet a lot, it would help to consolidate items as much as possible in a convenient package. The main difference I've seen in between the Palm Treo 650 and BB 7100g is the price, obviously. Since he will basically be using it for organization, I thought of the Palm, but also since he doesn't need that many features and extras, I thought of the BB.

Please help me decide on my father's day present by listing some of your own experiences with these two devices. As of right now, I am leaning towards the BB due to price mainly. Is the extra $200 worth it to upgrade to the Palm? With cingular and him already being on a contract, the prices are 200 and 400 w/o being on a contract, for the BB and Palm, respectively.

Thank you very much in advance!

I work in the computer industry and work with configuring the BB 7100g's. I am not going to say they are bad, but there are alot of techno geeks in the building (100's, mabe 1000's) and I hear them talking all the time - and almost ALL of them swear how superior the Treo 650 is...and these are guys/gals who have or had both. So take that for what it's worth

They are both going to be expensive if he is already under contract. $400+ for the BlackBerry and probably around $600 for the Treo.

If you are interested, I have the Blackberry for sale for only $250:

It's only been used a for a couple of months and is in brand new condition and I have all the original items and box/packing materials that it came with.

Awesome, thanks for your opinions guys, I think I've made up my mind. It'll be the Treo 650 for my dad on this father's day. The advanced calender options and touch screen is what sold me. Now all I need is a good purchasing source. Do any of you know a good source for an cingular branded Treo?

Well, I don't know how inclined you would be to buy a "used" treo, but I am thinking about putting mine on ebay. I don't dislike it, but I'm just looking for something smaller. It is basically brand-new, not a flaw. I have all original accessories, box, etc.. and have a high quality javo-edge skin case, usb retractable cable and screen protector. I also have a seidio retractable headphone cable\headset, and would include a 128mb sd card. The treo is also unlocked, which adds value as well. PM me if interested.

If all your dad needs it for is for the Organizer, then maybe you may just need the Treo 600 and not the Treo 650.

Check the Palmone.Com website or look around for great deals on used ones at MyTreo.net or TreoCentral.com and many other sites.

as the other user mentioned, you might want to get a treo 600 for your dad. it is nice (as I still have it, but i do not use it often). if your father does not need BT or better screen, i think treo 600 should fit your budget.

btw, you are such as a good kid to your dad.

Wirelessly posted (Nokia 6230: Nokia6230/2.0 (04.43) Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)

I would concur with the other posters in that, unless your father already uses Bluetooth, the Treo 600 might be an equally good (and cheaper) alternative.
Also, I was wondering (as my father was also diagnosed and successfully treated for prostate cancer) what stage the doctor caught it in. Is he getting an operation, doing chemo or radiation? Hope you don't mind me asking.

Each one is different.

The 7100g matched with the Blackberry Enterprise Server will beat the Treo all day long. Simply because the blackberry has realtime wireless exchange access. Calendar, contacts, and email are at your fingertips.

However, it sounds like your father just needs a datebook/phone. In that case get the Treo as it is a superior phone and datebook, just lacks the blackberry connectivity, but your father can sync his home PC with the Treo with the docking station.

End of this year Windows Mobile 5 will be seen on phones and PDA's. This will pretty much be the blackberry killer, or at least force the enterprise cost to come down dramatically. A business can update to SP2 for Exchange 2003 and match that with any Windows Mobile 5 device and you have push email, calendar, attachment viewing, etc, for FREE. Anyone that works with Blackberry Enterprise Server knows that it is INSANELY expensive to license those things.

I don't mind at all. Unfortunately it had already metasticized (sp?) and spread to his lower back, some in his leg and a very small amount in his neck. So there is no possibility for an operation to successfully remove everything. He is currently undergoing hormone treatment. At first his PSA's were at 481 (normal is between 0 and 4 !!!), and the treatment got him down to 3.8. He has been at that state for over a year. I really hope this "easy" treatment lasts. I really don't want to see him undergoing chemo, I don't think I could stand it. He has always been my hero and the only one not including my mom that has always been there for me to talk to when everyone else ditched me. How something could happen to such a good person, who knows. But all I know is I will enjoy the time we have.

I really appreciate all this help guys. Any more opinions would be appreciated, obviously the more the better. I actually caved in and gave him the 650 today, he loves it, and so do I, so this is looking to be my next phone.

As far as BT goes, I got him a headset, and as many as he has had in the past, wired that is, for older phones, he will definately appreciate the wireless convenience.
