Is it possible to use a s710a as a bluetooth modem with my 12" powerbook?
If so, how do I go about doing this? Would it cost me any money outside of my plan?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hey gln,

I'm in the same situation. I have a 12" powerbook, SE S710 with Cingular and I just spent about a half an hour on the phone with a Cingular tech about using my phone as a bluetooth modem. According to the tech, you need two things:

1. A Cingular Data Connect account. This is different than the MediaNet, which allows your phone access to the web via the WAP browser on your phone. It's $20 for 5MB a month and $80 for unlimited I believe.

2. A PC. Now what the tech told me was that you need to use Cingular's Communication Manager program in order to use your phone as a bluetooth modem because the information that the Cingular networks requires for connection, namely the Username, PW and CID, are embedded in the program. Basically according to the tech, the Mac OS isn't supported by Cingular and he couldn't give me the Username, PW and CID information, claiming he couldn't physically obtain that information. (The Mac OS has a wizard which can run you through setting up your bluetooth phone to use with your computer. Go to the bluetooth control panel and click "setup new device")

Now I've read other people's posts on Slashdot.org who have been able to use a bluetooth phone with Cingular's service to connect to the internet. Would anyone who has been able to do this explain how they did it? I think all I need are the Username, PW and CID. What modem script did you use? Also, is it true you need a Cingular Data Connect plan or can you use the MediaNet?

Thanks for the help.

I've not tried this, as my recently order s710a is on backorder waiting for it to arrive.

My understanding is this is all you do:

Discover the device via the bluetooth software, preferrably it lets you check that iSync, and modem work.

Then you use the internet connect option, it should be listed as a device and then wham-o, you're on the net.

Supposedly this works since the phone is supported by the OS (Hope it is, they have pictures of it on their webpage describing the feature)

Should have googled first, step by step instructions here:

http://homepage.mac.com/jrc/contrib/tzones/

Found this url which said to use the following for user info:

Telephone Number: *99#
Account Name: ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1

(search for EDGE, no directly link that I can find)
