Actually, stock Mk4 design it's not something extraordinary, but has a lot of potential to be a head-turner if done tastefuly. I don't see personaly the same potential in MK5. I've seen couple of them with a bodykit, big rims, tinted. Still... It doesn't look like a German car anymore. More like Toyota series. I am not trying to flame Toyota here or any Japaniese car in fact, but all German cars use to have a deffinitive look, so if you see one on the road you can say: yeah, this is German...
