SMT 5600 with a Blackberry Plan?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I am currently a Blackberry user.

I have heard many good things about the Audiovox 5600, and I am thinking seriously about buying one this weekend.

My question is this: will I be able to fully use (e.g., web browsing, wireless sync with Exchange 2003 Server, etc.) the 5600 on a Blackberry plan, or will I need to change plans?

I am one of those lucky ones that has a legacy AT&T unlimited minutes plan hooked up to and unlimited data Blackberry plan. I don't want anything to jeopardize that arrangement...

Thanks.

I have the 19.99 grandfathered Media Works package, and that covers all of my e-mail downloading and web browsing. I can just about guarantee that if you get a Cingular SMT5600, they will make you switch to a Cingular plan. On Cingular, the Blackberry plans are independent from the data plans, FYI. Best course of action, just go in and ask them at a Cingular Store (and I would advise you to use a life-long Cingular store, and NOT a Blue to Orange converted store)

I will be buying an unlocked phone from an entity other than Cingular.

Any ideas on the original question?

I am a Cingular customer with the $19.95 media works and webrowsing, wireless sync with Exchange Server 2003-- all work. But your Blackberry Plan will not get you there at all. The Blackberry service has nothing whatsoever to do with the operation of your SMT 5600. It just needs an internet connection.

If you are not willing to ditch the Blackberry Plan, then you are out of luck.

Maybe they would allow you to subsitute an internet plan for a blackberry plan. If so, you need an unlimited internet connection, which I have with my grandfathered MediaWorks unlimited. The unlimited plan, now, unless they have changed it is $24.95. Further, if you want the email "pushed" (it's really "pulled" under this system) to the device as it is delivered using the Always Up To Date (Autod) feature of Exhange Server 2003, you better also get a large number or unlimited SMS messaging, as the process uses an SMS message to prod your phone to check for it when there is a new mail on the server. It you are content just to have the device automatically pull mail off the server every 5 or 10 minutes, then no SMS's are used for that purpose.

I hope that you are aware that although Exchange Server works quite efficiently, IT at my office had to get it set up correctly, and I virtually guarantee you'll have to have their help to do the same with your server. Perhaps others are already using the feature, and, if so, setting yours up should be a snap. So you need to make sure you have corporate and IT support for this service at your place of employment, or you won't be able to use it.

Finally, I hope you are not planning to have a Cingular retail rep know what you are talking about if you tell them you want to use Exhchange Server 2003 on your phone. They will not have any idea of what you speak.

I have been using this Exhange Server 2003 since February, and it works just perfectly. I love this phone. I have also had the Blackberry and liked it too, but much prefer the SMT. If you have to send a lot of lenghty emails, though, better stick with the Blackberry and its keyboard. SMT 5600 has T9 recognition, and it works, but that will not get you the speed of the Blackberry keyboard. Also the SMT5600 screen size makes it difficult to read Word or pdf Documents without a lot of scrolling. You will also have to get a program like the ClearVue Suite to allow reading of Word and pdf documents.

If you can live with those shorcomings, and I can, I love the SMT 5600.

Update: 6/25/05--I have my smt 5600 working beautifully with my Unlimited Blackberry plan. No changes needed on the cingular side. Didn't think there would be...

Which access point did you use for your GPRS connection on the 5600?

Send your e-mail address to rdef1964@cox.net, and I'll send you a word doc with all the settings. I'll post the access point in a minute.
