I am looking for something not too complicated and yet has a nice finnished product. I have read about all of the conversion steps I can go thru to get a movie on my Audiovox smt5600 but I would like to work with just one good program that will do it all and not sacrifice quality. Any suggestions??

Thanks I already downloaded Betaplayer. DVD Shrinker I found by googling. Well today I am trying PocketDVD 1.1 that I found on Handango and will test that. Once it is done I will try the dvd shrinker and DIVx and see what I like better. I like this PocketDVD so far but it is taking really long. Me surfing HOFO doesnt help much either.

Not DVD ShrinkER...DVD SHRINK. There is a DVD Shrinker, but use DVD Shrink.

Well up and running with DVD Shrink and Pocket DIVx. Works awesome and fast!! The quality is much better than what I experienced w/Makayama software and my Imate JAM pocket PC. Although the Makayama software produces slightly smaller files it takes longer and the qulaity isnt there. Not to mention all the hang-ups I experienced when the software didnt like the DVD. So here is my next question.....

What are the best settings for DVD shrink and Pocket DIVx??? I am tempted to start fiddling with the settings to shrink the file down but I think someone on HOFO already has that answer??

Thanks for the help

Hey guys, the official site for DVD Shrink is:
http://www.dvdshrink.org/
I have been using it for a long while for DVDs, one of the best free programs I've ever used by far.

I am going to give Pocket DivX a try. I have BetaPlayer and it works well for video. FWIW, I tried the trial of Pocket DVD and was not impressed.

Try using this program. You can demo it through Handango also. I demo'd:
Pocket DVD Studio, Pocket DVD Wizard and one other. I found Pocket DVD Studio to be the easiest to use. It was $29 though. However, its one stop shopping where all you do is put in your dvd players and (if you prefer default settings) click record. When it is completed all you have to do is drag it over to your sd card. Piece of cake. It plays in WM player 10 no problem, although I am curious about Betaplayer, so I will check that player out too

i prefer VirtualDub instead of Pocket DivX encoder. pocket DivX is easier but i think virtualdub gives better results by allowing more user control. virtualdub does not support mpeg-2 files but there is a modified version available at http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable/ that does. its an easy no install application. just extract the zip file and run the program.

it might seem intimidating at first but if you google for guides you will find endless info on virtualdub as has been around a very long time and is very widely used.

Jon West,

I would be curious to hear what is better. Personally I like having everything loading from WMP10 but the quality from Pocket DIVx doesnt even compare when I burned movies onto my JAM and WMP10. Anyhow, can you tell us what is better?? DVD SHRINK and Pocket DIVx or Pocket DVD Wizard???

Posted by: jonjonwest

Using Pocket DVD Studio, you can download your movie into the wma and avi format. If you choose the avi format, the you have to select either the Divx or Xvid codec (both free and one click away from downloading through Pocket DVD Wizard).

I would imagine all these programs are so similar, just go with what works.

I am now working on a solution for how to put a movie on and jump from chapter to chapter.... Im hoping a movie in avi format and played through Betaplayer will work.

ok thank u

dvd to pocket pc (or smartphone is the easiest i've found so far, as long as you're not in a hurry.

Posted by: jonjonwest

so i re-installed my two movies. this time i put them in the avi format so i can watch them with the betaplayer. the windows media player is not good for watching movies since you can only fast forward a few seconds at a time. with beta plater you can zoom through movies to an particular scene.

question: how long does dvd to pocket pc (smartphone) take to convert a movie? and is it freeware?

when i use pocket dvd studio 1.1, it takes about 1 hour and then i put my minisd into my card reader and transfer the avi or wmv through my card reader in a matter of minutes.

Posted by: liqrslinger23

dvd to pocket pc is $20 and it takes about 2 hours to encode a movie, but the finished product is around 128mb when its done. takes less than 2 minutes to transfer. i like the simplicity; just pop in a disc and hit action. i don't have any experience with divx and don't have the patience....it's worth $20 once to save me the headaches.

I have several movies, already in DIVX format. Is it possible to resize them so that they're ready for my 5600?

I haven't found a utility, yet, that will offer this feature without a lot of hassle...but then I haven't looked very hard.

PocketDivXEncoder worked for me, but I used it to convert & resize at the same time. It probably will do a resize on an already converted video.
