EDGE phones

I'm considering getting a phone enabled with the unliminted MEdia Net and tethering it to my laptop. Or just getting a treo650.

My question is which would be the best EDGE enabled phone carried by cingular? In terms of reliability and up/dn speeds. I also hear stuff about different EDGE 'classes' and wondering which of the variety are available through cingular.

Well, the Nokia 6230 is arguably one of the best EDGE phones, but it also has one of the worse screens; otherwise, it is probably the most feature packed phone, for its size, that Cingular offers. Another solid choice is the SE S710a or Nokia 6620. For a PDA device, the Treo 650 is your best bet.

Or the V551, but its EDGE is slower than the Nokia's. If EDGE is your primary criteria and you can live with the 6320 get that (I would definetely play around with it in the store though to see if you can put up with the screen/keypad).

I'm really happy with the S710a for this. I could ALMOST stand using it as my primary net access.

How did I forget about that one? You are right, though, EDGE is slower on this device.

It was considerably slower. It wasn't the camera or the media player that sold me on the S710a. The class 10 EDGE got me. I believe the V551 (which I had for about a week) is class 4.

It is class 4. I am not sure, so don't quote me, but not many, in any, Moto phones have class 10 EDGE. They (Moto) have gotten it right in producing so many quad-band phones, which is the reason I own a V3, but they need to get it together in the quality control department, among other areas. They also need to put more features in their phones; if the V3 had the feature set of the Nokia 6230i, it would be the ultimate device for me.

I've been pretty happy with a Treo 600, and thought about upgrading to the 650 to get EDGE. However, aren't there rumors that even EDGE is about to be obsolete on Cingular? I'd not want to make a major purchace or commitment, if in 6 months something much faster comes along and my new purchase isn't compatable (the story of my life btw).

edge will be around for a while trust me. you'll want a new phone anyways by the time it would replaced by anything in the states.

I recently used Edge for the first time opposed to using GPRS on the T616 with my s710a and then with a nokia 6620. tethering over the laptop is a nice upgrade from GPRS. reminds me of a slow dsl speed. speaking of classes, I honestly couldn't tell a difference in speeds between the 710a and 6620 over the laptop. if i ran the speed tests I could probably get a more accurate number but I was just testing for my real-world use.

I know with edge I will have to be careful with my data usage. I have the older media basic plan or whatever it is called. I had the old unlimited plan, I wonder if i can get it grandfather back in???
