Customer broke a working RAZR V3 IN the store...

On friday, I went with a friend of mine to a corp. Cingular store to help her find a phone and switch from a local carrier. This guy comes in, apparently a customer whose account is in Texas. He comes in and says his phone is broken, and wanted to get a new one or something. The rep. asked if he had insurance, and he replied that he didn't know... Which I thought was strange. How do you not know if you are paying for insurance? According to the rep. he couldn't access the guys account, since we are in OH, and then I stopped paying attention to what they were talking about. The guy went over to a land line (courtesy phone?), and proceeded to call Cingular CS maybe? I wasn't exactly stalking the guy, just observing. This courtesy phone is located next to the "bar" of powered on Cingular phones that you can fool around with to see if you like it. Take pictures, tool around with the menus, etc...

Then I hear... "Uh oh" and I turn around to see pieces of a phone on the ground, and I look up in his hand and he's holding a RAZR... Somehow the dude completely broke off the screen part, and is holding the other part in his other hand. One rep, who had just done a demo with the RAZR maybe five minutes previous flipped out, and told the guy he had to pay for it... So I guess they got the guy's information, and he left. They didn't make him pay for it right then, so who knows if the guy really even had an account with Cingular. Then I heard "check the cameras", and it turns out they don't have a camera on the "bar"... I hadn't even realized there were any cameras in the place at all.

So thats my story. It's kinda boring actually. Can they make you pay for a phone if they think you broke it in the store? I mean, I think he broke it, but maybe someone else broke it, and just put it back, and when he went to look at it, it all fell apart? This is why I have a job without "customers".

they can't make him for it. If he agress to pay for it great but they insurance for these types of situations.

That's kind of awkward that they don't have any security cameras on the area where the powered, working, usable non-dummy phones are...

Just another reason for stores to keep their stupid non-playable-aroundable dummy phones

Go away clumsy people !

I agree, sounds like he walked out with a working RAZR and left his busted one in it's place...I would hope they'll track the IMEI though.

As of last week, you could not get insurance on a RAZR. I would have thought the store people would have known that.

You're a good man for being brave enough to trust people with your phone like that.

At my old BB store, this pig of a customer broke both my live Razr & my non working demo( the one i replaced the broken one w/)in a span of 5 days. The sad part is mgmt. completely blew it off but when i store used a Razr for our demo line they went ape! Whatever.

In my humble oppinion, this is the risk that all cell phone stores must take.

Having live demos of phones is a must. Customers should be able to demo the phones prior to buying. This should be a feature in ALL stores with ALL handsets. It's like going to the supermarket and asking to buy a piece of fish and never looking at the fish. Or trying to buy some bananas in a closed box, not knowing whether or not it's ripe.

Cingular is a big company with a lot of insurance. They can handle it

That's hard to believe that they don't have insurance on the demo phones. Also you wouldthink that Nokia, Motorola, etc... would give Cingular as many demo phones as they needed to help sale their product. For me no demo no sale all the reviews in the world don't mean jack if I can't try it out for myself.

on a side note. One of my dealers has a manager that carrys a berreta on his ankle. He walks like he has to . Funniest thing i have every seen. Next to the fact that the store is located in a part of atlanta that has very little crime. Upper case teenagers carrying shotguns in black trench coats to school kind of area.
