Force Fido Phone To A Rogers Tower

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: punterab

Hi, I am using a SE s710a on a Fido plan here in Calgary. I have the $50 unlimited Data plan. My phone can use the 850 band and is Edge Capable. I read in the Forums here, of some success getting edge data speeds if you "force " your fido phone to Roam the Rogers net work. ( I have the $5 a month extended plan) I can only see one net work when I do a manual scan. "FIDO".

Can someone help with a suggestion as to how to roam on Rogers??????

(I was going to a Fido CSR, but would probably get the "we don't support that model of phone speech)

Thanks :

the fido is actually rogers(302-720)(your area is intergrated) but they have sent an update so that rogers displays as fido (which they want all fido handsets to display). i think that you will get edge speeds on this network. hope this helps!

Thanks, that is good news, I think. Still seems kinda slow. I will try a download speed test and see. I know of the Cnet one, is there another one I could try???

To ensure that you are on Rogers, complete the following steps:

Step 1:
Menu > Connectivity > GSM Network > Search Mode > Manual [SELECT]

Step 2:
Menu > Connectivity > GSM Network > Select Network > Fido (w/ the tower looking symbol; not the house) [SELECT]

Thanks, I did try that manual search and since integration, there is no tower symbol no house symbol just one network "Fido".

thanks

Tether the phone via bluetooth and use the phone as a modem via the obex dial up networking. You will have to make sure you have internet.Fido.ca as the apn. I suggest creating a whole new data account for this. Take note of the cid of the account as you'll need it in the dial string.

Now, on the pc click dial up networking via your paired bluetooth services. The user name and pass is Fido and the dial string is *99***x# where x is the cid of the data account where internet.Fido.ca resides.

Oh and finally with all that done run a speed test on www.toast.net/performance as that's the site i use for simplicity. I scored 192kb/s using the S710a as it's class 10 and se generally does edge well

GPRS averages 40kb/s

Thanks Treatz, well I have a mac so I'm not sure what "Obex" is but I will try to make the new data profile and "dial" it up from my notebook.

is this the only way to do this? with the *99***x# thing?

I'll let you know what happens. Thanks for being so patient, kinda new at this. thanks

PS. I do love the s710a, wow!!!!

The S710a is definately winning me over, truth be told.
now, not to fammiliar with MACS but you have to pair the phone and MAC via BT. once paired you will be able to see the availble BT OBEX things your phone can do.. Dial up networking should be one of them.

so, Pair your phone with MAC however you do it in MAC land.
then, make sure you create a data account for Fido's Internet..

it will look like this:

menu/connect/datacommunication/Data accounts
New account

EDGE Data
name: Fido Internet
APN: internet.fido.ca
username: fido
password: fido

rememver the CID of that account.

Then Dial string on your mac, whereever it asks should be
*99***X# like i said earlier

Posted by: Treatz

now depiite all of that.. you still may not get EDGE speedfs as I've been told that Fido apn's aren't set up for full EDGE and have no ETA on if and when they will be

Hi Treatz, here's what I have done. before I tell you, I just wanted to clear something up first, I have been sucessfully using s710 a as a bluetooth "modem" for my laptop, just at really slow gprs speeds. I have a sony ericsson modem "script/string" that makes the bluetooth modem connect to the laptop.... I was connecting with a profile using "wap.fido.ca". so now I am trying to use one using "internet.fido.ca" is this correct? Anyway here's what I have tried..... I made a new data profile in the phone and called it "fido internet"...it's APN is "internet.fido.ca. I then went to internet settings on the phone, and made an 'Internet Profile" is this correct so far? I called the internet profile
"Edge" and then inside it's settings I made it connect to my new data profile "fido internet". In those settings i have a choice of "http" or "Wap" I chose http. it now wants an Ip address. do I need one?

when i use the laptop to "dial" the cellphone I put in your *99***X# what do I put for a cid? the "phone number" I used to have it dial was "internet.fido.ca" and that worked , very slow. I did the speed test and got "29"!!!!!! sorry for being so wordy, but I feel that I am almost there, any more help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

A little bird sitting on a Tower told me that you can get EDGE speeds dependant on your Edge Class. Before I could ask more details the Bird flew away & hit the side of the Telus Head Office @ Consilium Place in Scarborough.

Ok, the CID is the # of the data account..
in your data accounts you'll see the data account you created will have a CID # which can be seen by going to that account and selecting More and then account info.. it'll say:
name: xxxxxxxxx
External ID: X

that external ID is the CID i'm talking about.

now create a new data account with the info I've told you and change the dial string to *99***X# and then run a test.. see if you get EDGE speeds

You must find the CID code in phone that relates to the Web session setting you plan on using.

Unless I missed it You have forgotten to have Rogers Roaming enabled on your Account. Only a suggestion for a better surfing experience!

I just assumed I was roaming on Rogers if I have the $5 a month
extended coverage plan? Do I have to ask them, or should I be automatically on it?????

mmmmm, I am pulling my hair out trying to get this to work... arghhhh

I found out that my cid for the new data account is " 1 " so I put this in the dialing string like this *99***1#
it doesn't connect. when I change the "telephone number" *99***X# to
"Internet.fido.ca" in the phone number box. I connect go figure.
I wonder why this is. it works but is so slow the internet is painful to use!!!

^^i have a mac and it was hell seting it up. i mean searching for a modem script. but finaly it worked. But tooday 9kb/s is deadly slow. i am thinking of stoping it. i haav a moto v400 which doesn't hav edge so i cant stand the 9kb/s when im use to 1mb/s.

Something is Wrong there ,likely your network. I used to get 9kb years ago with a TDMA 6160i Roger's Portage . Integration or severe congestion in your area must be stifleing your Speeds. I have noticed numerous times since the take over Horrendously slow sppeds on Fido GPRS. Fastest on Fido GPRS I have ever seen was 52kb & have never repeated it .

well I think i have tried almost everything to get my s710a to browse the web at Edge Speeds in Calgary. I can get my laptop online "dialing" my cell phone two different ways. one dialing a profile using "wap.fido.ca" as the APN. And the other profile using "internet.fido.ca". Unless there is some setting I am missing.... both are very slow. My download speed test is about 29 !!!. No where near the Speed that "Treatz" gets in T.O.
I assume that if I can get the laptop on the net using "internet.fido.ca" that that is about all I can do. Either it's Edge speeds or not. Am I correct in that assumption??????? Maybe it just doesn't work in Calgary for some reason????? Do I have to ask for "rogers roaming" or does it just automatically do so?????

Well if anyone has any more ideas please let me know

Much Thanks

Don't think it'll help. Fido gprs may only get gprs.

Punterab, your using a Mac right? OK so far Treatz has helped you out, but your missing something vital.

In your setup on the Mac what modem script are you using? Very Important. The ericsson (yes theres more than one just use the "ericsson" NOT "ericsson ir" script) script should work fine. If not then go here to download and install scripts for SE and that are compatible for EDGE speeds.

http://www.taniwha.org.uk/

Again, in the PC world this is actually much simpler, because drivers dont necessarily restrict your data speed. On the Mac this is very different, as plug and play is vital to what comes with the OS or must be updated directly. See what you can find there and come back here and report your progress.

Cheers.
PS there is one of my many posts in the series60 thread regarding a Mac setup step by step; which is relevant up till info regarding series60 Nokia phones.

Scince the take over the network by my house is always busy...i dial out w/ fido "call failed network busy" and i do a network search "network busy"...i restart my phone and it searchs for netowkr and nothing comes up (no operator logo) and i cant recieve or get calls. This has been going on for about a 6 months 80% of the time. Might be time to buy out of my contract and go to CDMA eww. the only thing holding me back is my moto v400.

Im glad to see you found a working modem script. I dont own a Mac yet but will be shopping soon enough. Another thing that would hold you back - find a knowledgeable rep for surity - is you may not get a Bell/Telus phone that can be used as a modem that supports your Mac. Most of those phones require a data cable & software; some do work though. Double check with those providers for how deep their Mac support goes. Eww indeed.

Posted by: kdholdom

^^I went to the extream no im not buying out of my service...even now that rogers owns fido, fido is still the best. My area is right in the middle of intergration so im sure thats y i am at 9kb/s. B4 this i was going aaround 40kb/s. So im sure after the 25th i will be back around there. And I will never have EDGE cuz my moto v400 wont support edge. sucks..eh?

Getting it going on the Mac is easy.

On my P910a I use the SE GPRS CID1 script from the page mentioned earlier, if you got the EDGE scripts and used one of those it should be ok.

Anyways, it's as easy as this:

You need to do a "Setup Bluetooth Device". This can be done in Bluetooth in system preferences by clicking on "Set up new device".

Continue and select "mobile phone", continue again and select your phone from the list, get through the passkey phase.

The following part is the most important. Select the services you want from the list, there will be iSync, Address Book, and Access the internet with your phone's data connection.

Make sure you have "Access the internet with your phone's data connection" selected, the other two are obviously optional. Under that are 2 options. "Dial a specific number for your internet service provider" or "Use a direct higher speed connection to reach your internet service provider.

You want the FIRST one believe it or not - "Dial a specific number for your internet service provider".

Select that and select continue. Next screen, username is "fido", password is "fido", and phone number is "internet.fido.ca". Select the modem script you ended up choosing above. To see the extra ones you added from the script site you'll need to select "Show all Available scripts".

That should do it.

Thanks Prom1 ! you are correct I am using a mac, and I am using the modem scripts from the site that you suggested. BUT I was not using the "3G" Edge enabled dialing scripts. I never thought that a Modem String could cause a speed bottle neck!!!!

So I got the new 3G dialing scripts got the number 2 one and the number 4 one to connect!!!!!

Only problem is ......... Just as slow as I was before, PAINFULLY slow.

only scoring 29 on the speed test. not much better than an old 33.6 modem.

Do you have any other ideas?????? Maybe Calgary doesn't have Edge speeds?????

Well, after much configuring and testing I scored a 52 kb/s does anyone think this could be edge? or just a good gprs speed?

I know it's not as good as Treaz's 192.

clear the temp files on the PC browser and run again

Does anyone think that this could be edge speed???????

I'd like to think I am finally there, thanks to Treatz and Prom 1 !!!!!!!!!
