MPX220 destined to be classic

You know, since the release of the 1.430 ROM, and with the recent support from Audible.com, the MPX220 is really looking up. The clamshell design, along with the astounding functionality of this device is really coming into its own.

I recently sold my HP h2215 pocket pc to get one of the new hx4705's. Well, the hx4705 has some kind of a memory problem, and is going back home to HP to get overhauled, leaving me without my pocket pc. You know what? I don't even care. Lately, the MPX220 has been behaving quite well, thank you. Really does all the work of my pocket pc...only smaller I hardly ever drag the laptop out.

What I'm getting to is it's probably a good idea to hold on to your MPX220. They're finally starting to get this thing right. I'm really looking forward to the new firmware release. With any new hardware, there is always a period of refinement to work the bugs out. Now that the MPX220 is working and doing its thing, I am certainly in no hurry to part with it. Anything else that comes along will put a real dent in your pocketbook, and probably won't do a heck of a lot more than this baby.

The MPx220 has been the best phone I've had so far, period. Now, I wouldn't go that far saying it's a PDA replacement. I can write with Block Recognizer / Graffiti four times faster than tapping letters on a phone's keypad. Not to mention that there is no Pocket Word and Pocket Excel for Smartphones.

The mpx220 is a terrible phone. I was able to use it as a pda for a while after the phone stopped working, but even so, I lost some valuable photos. Now I don't get a single, Best Buy no longer carries it, and Cingular and Motorola are doing nothing to help. I'm going to have to buy an SMT 5600 from Cingular, and have Best Buy reimburse me. What colossal pain in the ***! I loved the style of it, and the pda was simple, but extremely useful. It turned out to be a real lemon though. Where the hell are the mpx230 and the mpx?

A classic right along with the Ford Edsel, LOL.

well, so far in my experience with phones, my mpx220 is leagues superior to anything I have ever used, and also compared with the phones/pdas of the general public that I come in contact with, is far superior. a classic in my book!

Ooooo.....first time I heard that one today. Let me guess, I'm the weakest link, goodbye?

I'm not sure the MPx230 is dead yet. The latest Motorola FW updater 1.8.5 includes an option for the 230 where the last version 1.8.3 did not. Surprised the crap out of me...

it was pulled from BB for the same reason it was pulled even from the cingular stores. It should make a return soon.

Hmm. Witty. Nobody had flamed you or touched you. Checked twice. Don't see your name involved in this or even affected by the response. Did it sting?

That is because the MPx 220 is called the MPx 230 in Asia.

well, some ppl buy their phones for the complete package, if u advertise it as the complete package then u better do things well... telling ppl to buy a camera if they need a camera is just making an excuse for moto for making a shltty camera, the same could be said: need a better phone, buy something else....

the phone is decent, all rounder but yeah after a few days of playing w it the cam is not impressive at all i dont plan on taking alot of pics w this phone =p

I'd heard that the mpx230 was the mpx220 with windows mobile 2005 on it.

No. Convergence generally does not do any one thing well. The camera is not and never will be as good as a wholly dedicated camera such as Nikon, Canon or Olympus, the music player will never be as good as an iPod, iRiver or Rio, etc. Adding all that is simply marketing. I go on vacations with a camera. If I use my phone for a shot, it is simply as spur of the moment to show someone. If it is bad, does not matter. Curiously enough, the phone part of convergence is pretty simple. It is not that hard to make a phone, and even most naysayers seldom complaint about the phone part. In my case is as good as any other phone.

Yep. An all rounder. In fact, I keep a PDA (AXIM x50v) as well. The MPx220 calendar is a secondary reminder, but the ability to keep information of 1200 people is invaluable. The V3 would not be able to do either.

some people would say that its better to do one thing well, then do a number of things halfass.

the problem with the mpx220 is that it does a lot but doesnt do any one thing really well. its a mediocre phone, semi-functional pda, average camera, etc.

I also have a Toshiba E800 which I am beginning to use less and less since I got the mpx220. I bought a Lifeview 1.3mp Flycam to use with the E800 but was so disappointed by the picture quality it's just sitting around gathering dust. The mpx220 cost me about the same as the flycam and really produces better quality pictures. I agree that it's an all rounder but I must add that it is an excellent one. I have over 7700 contacts in the mpx and it handles it very decently. When I added a pcmcia card gsm to my ipaq pda, it would lock up looking up a contact with more than 4000 entries. I haven't used that many phones but I must confess the mpx220 has me taken.

Which is true of all convergence devices. However, you are wrong on a number of points: It is a fully functional Smartphone OS, which is not the same as WM2003, WM2003SE or WM2005. It is inferior to all of those, but it does the job it does well, for what it is. An average camera is a good thing, considering that it is an afterthought - but it was never intended to take those Pulitizer prize photos or a wedding spread. As to a telephone, I think it is an outstanding phone and in fact, most people agree. I have had a number of phones that did not have the RF this one does. It may be better to have something that does one thing well, but in that case I would have to carry a cell phone, a PDA, a camera and a MP player with me at all times....

I agree. I do have the Axim around, although it resides in my office or in my briefcase, as I find it easier to input in that device than in the 220. I also use the PDA to keep my books, manuals, maps, astronomy programs and the like that I do not access with the phone. The phone, however, is with me virtually around the clock....
