Nokia 6230 vs Moto v551???

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have the option of getting either of these phones, and wanted to get some input from you guys on which would be the better phone. Ive got a 6200IM from ATT, so I've got most of the accy's for it, dku cable, headset, batteries, chargers, etc. Are the accy's compatible with the 6230 (I would assume so, but want to make sure). I'm a big Nokia person (havent had a lick of probs with one in years).

Thanks.

Also, what ringtone formats do either of these phones use? (stupid newbie question, dont beat me.....

go with the 6230
i dont have it, but i do have the v551 and its kinda crappy
..the hinge on it is starting to crack, the display is scratched because it hits the keys everytime it shuts, and the reception is not as good as the nokia
..also the 6230 offers more bang for the buck (mp3 player, movie player, etc.), i wish i wouldn't have been stupid back when i bought the v551 because i only got it cause i wanted a cool flip phone like everyon else. bad mistake.

im going to buy the 6230 within the next month hopefully

btw, the v551 will play mp3 ringtones, but no expandable memory and i think internal memory is only like 8 mb.

so unless the whole flip thing is a big deal to you, 6230 without a doubt.

i'm a little bit off the original topic here, but what do you think about 6230 vs. v635? would that be a fairer comparison?

Posted by: chonga

no, imo i dont think so
i mean they're comparable in features but it's just kinda not right to compare them...it's like a subaru wrx (the 6230) vs. bmw 3 series (v625)
they are similar in speed and power but it's just different...?? if that makes sense..
you're going to pay a lot more for the v635
i would compare the v635 more to either the 6230i or maybe even the 6620

in that case i haven't had the chance to use a v635, but moto's seem to be real buggy and i haven't had the best experiences with moto's. 3 of my friends moto's hinges cracked and mine is starting to do the same. as for the nokia's i haven't had one myself, but my girlfriend does and many of my friends do and they seem to like them...
...if they would only make a good quality flip phone i think almost everyone would have a nokia since most of my friends go for the "cool" flip phones.

well actually the price is really not that much of a difference, only about $80 or so. but yeah, i understand what you mean. i was tempted to compare it with 6620 at first, but 6620 has Symbian which makes it belong to a different class altogether.

to the OP, although i don't own any of the two, i agree with chonga. i think the 6230 is superior than the v550.

I'm sorry, what?

Posted by: chonga

lol
i think he was bragging about the 6230
but through all that garbled mess he's right, the 6230 really is hands down superior to the v551 in terms of everything except for the screen which i believe the moto wins with a sharper, crisper, and seemingly more colorful screen but not by much. (it's also bigger)

I have both. Have stopped using the V635 as my regular phone, using the 6230b instead (the Nokia UI has alot to do with it). The only thing I miss is the V635's screen. You can't go wrong with either one of them.

sorry OP for semi-hijacking the thread. hopefully you are interested in getting the info about v635 also.

i do a lot of synchronization of my outlook and my phone (currently a nokia 6800). not exactly using it as a PIM per-se, but the phone really has to be able to sync with my contacts (and choose from multiple contact list in outlook 2003) and calendar in outlook and it is super easy with the nokia-provided software. would there be a problem at all doing this with the v635? i have never owned a motorola before.

Let me offer a different perspective as I played around alot with both the 6230b and the v551 and ended up with the v551--in spite of it being a little more expensive and I really prefer candy bar phones. The V551 actually feels a lot more solid than the Nokia, and thus far no problems with the hinges or the screen (and my wife has a V400 which she has put through a lot and it still works like a charm). The Nokia has a bit of a plasticky feel to it, though it feels pretty well-built in spite of that (not as flimsy as the T637).

RF wise it appears to be a wash between the two, and call quality is slightly better on the V551 (probably the position of the microphone).

While a lot of people rave about the Nokia GUI, I was not impressed. The V551 is not that great either, so that is pretty much a wash too.

The v551 is quad band, 6230 tri-band. If you travel oustide of Western Europe, 900 is a must and the 6230 would turn into a paper weight.

PIM features are stronger on the Nokia than on the Moto--considerably so. The Moto address book cannot store postal addresses (only phones and email addresses), and the calendar is a joke and there is no to-do-list. But the way I see it if you really need heavy duty PIM functionality, get a smartphone, a PDA or a good ol' filofax.

The real downsides of the 6230 are the screen, which is pretty bad--small and washed out--and the cheap rubber keypad that is not very responsive and feels like it will fall off after a week of use. Coupled with the surprising weight and heft of the 6230, I found it cumbersome to use, especially for texting/emailing and the like. The V551 has a really nice responsive keypad by contrast, and as I email alot from my phone that was important.

True, the Nokia has some features (MP3 player, etc.) that the V551 does not have, and if they matter to you you have your answer.

Thanks for the input. I'm going with the 6230. Ive had awesome luck with my 6200im and other nokias in the past. My only complaint was that the speakerphone volume was wearin out a little (not a major complaint). I'm not a flip person cause Im sure I'd break it in no time. I love the UI on the nokias, very easy to use.

I like the idea of MP3 ringtones, and you can get larger memory chip (up to 128mb) for more storage.

I use my existing phone for tethering on my laptop, the occasional text message, and the occasional web surfing. RF quality takes precedence though.

yeah good choice
btw, you can expand the mmc memory up to 1GB
i wish i would've made the same decision as you about 8 months ago

you and me both! I want a 6230 so bad but i don't have the money...

Posted by: chonga

well im in contract for another 4 months but im going to buy the 6230 as a "go phone" for $200
in the store by me you can buy any phone as a go phone and the 6230 happens to come with a rebate as a go phone and you don't have to purchase a single minute
then when those new nokias come out, especially the 6270, i'll just use the 2 yr price and sell the 6230 on ebay
btw, v551 is the last moto i buy.

haha i think we think exactly alike. i'm not getting another moto either most likely. I'm going back to nokia's for reliability and durability. I have 6 months left on my contract. i may purchase a 3120 or possibility a X427, that's what my wife has, in the mean time. then when my contract runs out, get a better phone with the new contract.

Or do what I did and get the Samsung c207 GoPhone for $29.99 (my x427's hinge was cracking).

The whole deal was discussed here:

I'm surprised that no one mentioned how unbearably SLOW the v551's UI is. My 6620 is faster, if that tells you anything. My fiance has the v551 and I find it absolutely intolerable. And yes, since no one really answered, you'll be able to use your 6200 acc. for the 6230, both have pop-port. A blessing and a curse.

My wife has a v551 and I have the 6230. Comparing only signal strength and battery life the 6230 recently proved itself.

We were recently at the hospital for several days for a family member. Cell phones were allowed in certain areas. Her phone had a hard time holding a signal and the battery barely lasted a day of heavy use. The 6230 always held a signal and the battery lasted well through the day.

how is the c207? I know it's an entry level phone. How's the RF and durability? RF is my main thing and i'd be willing to pay an extra $30 to get a nokia 3120 if it is better.

RF is about equal to my x427. Durability would be hard to guess because I've only had it a week. I never used a 3120, so I can't make comparisons.

yeah i had that down in DC....i was at a party with my friend who had a 3120 and i had no reception the whole night...maybe a blip of 1 bar now and then but he had 3-4 bars the whole night!!! i was so mad. after that i knew my next phone was a nokia

and i personally think samsungs get pretty darn good reception. my gf's x427 used to have 1 bar but you could talk on it like you had full reception in the wal mart nearby. My v551 would have 2 bars but as soon as i would get a call it would be choppy and garbled.

This might be due to the old firmware. My V551 has the newest version and it is as zippy as any other phone I have ever used.

what's the current firmware version? and do i just take it to a cingular store to get it updated?

Posted by: Nick94

I think it is R472_G.08.18.16R_0A (thats what I got) though I am sure somebody in the moto forum could tell you for sure. Supposedly an easy way to tell what you got is to see if you have the EDGE ('E') icon or not--older versions of the firmware do not have it. Compared to the old one, the new one is noticably better and takes care of some of the common gripes about the V551 (such as battery life).

I dont know if you can go into Cingular and have them upgrade it--I went in during my first V551's 30 day period and they just gave me a new phone.
