(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ok so I have been reading around and I see that Audiovox and Sharp both have made hiptop2's

Who exactly is making the fido ones or are some different? because my charger says Sharp. So I gather that mine is sharp.

I'm not aware that Audiovox actually *makes* any H2s. I think they were considered as one of the suppliers, but I've never seen one that wasn't made by Sharp.

Hmmm I don't know it's listed on Audiovox's website: http://www.audiovox.com/webapp/wcs/...13648&langId=-1

Interesting. I stand corrected. Now I'm all confused. :-)

I thought that Danger made them all and just they got rebranded by other names.

Ultimately, Danger is the OEM for purposes of designing the device. Sharp handles the actually assembly line production of the devices, as a contractor working for Danger.

As for Audiovox, I believe they merged with Sharp some time ago, so that may be why you see their name mentioned sometimes.

I hope that info helps. Now, dump that unreliable toy and come join the legion of BlackBerry users! You'll be MUCH happier!

Actually Audiovox is now called UTstarcom.

And to tell you the truth I prefer the HT2 over a BB because it saves me $40 a month on data but I like blackberries with bluetooth

I know the Blackberry rates in Canada are ridiculous compared to down here in the States, BUT you get what you pay for. The data servers that provide your internet service for the Hiptop/Sidekick are notoriously unreliable, AND they can be hacked into quite easily, resulting in the theft of your personal data. If you don't believe me, do some research online. It has already happened. Celebrities such as Paris Hilton had the data from their Sidekicks stolen when the data servers were hacked into earlier this year!

If you want an inexpensive PDA phone, stay with the Hiptop. But if you want one that's RELIABLE and more SECURE, go to a Blackberry. Either way, you get what you pay for!

good question on the back of the screen it will tell you mine says sharp but all my documentation is from audiovox, kinda weird but it may have been a combined interest between the 2 of them. thtas the only reasonable conclusion i have come to, also if would have known that audiovox had anything to do with it i would have never bougth 1 the don't back there products and the majority of there stuff is crap......

Whats is your pet's name Jack?

Cause Paris wasn't hacked more than she was just plain dumb. Her account was spilled on the net because she had set her password retrieval question to "tinkerbell".

Only difference between you and her, is that she kept saying her pet's name on tv and in magazine. She is just dumb.

T-Mobile got hacked on their entire platform, not on a particular one. Remember how most account of the hack were saying how 400 customers got their social security and credit card number stolen? This has nothing to do with what a couple sidekick getting hacked.

Do your own research. The only sites that didn't correct the reason why Paris's sidekick was hacked are Blackberry users forums. Surprising.

/Didn't wanna threadjack, but it was done before I came in here

I believe the original devices (both B&W and color) were manufactured by Flextronics.

Gutterpunk,

Vida Guerra also had her Sidekick II hack recently, and is nothing to do with the Tmobile servers being hacked. Either way the BlackBerry from RIM is so secure its scarrier than Big Brother was back in the mid 70's! I'd like to see how the Sidekick II turns out when the OS is updated as Danger promised to a newer version of Java OS, hoping more like the BlackBerry, and no more extreme limitations like ringtones or no themes. I'm always off & on the the thing, but RIM has always my vote.

any chance of other carriers besides t-mobile picking it up?

actually my sister and i both got sidekicks and i noticed something different about mine from hers. hers felt heavier, and a rougher flip, and the keys were slightly bigger than mine. Also hers would lose reception a morer often then me int he same spots as i'm standing when i'm fine. Mine says it was made by sharp. I wonder if hers was made by audiovox.

I've noticed that also. A few of my friends have Sidekicks and some feel heavier then others. Mine is considerable lighter. My screen seems to flip easier then theirs do. Any my wheel isn't as rigid. Besides that, there are no other differences that any of us notice.

To anyone who thinks audiovox makes the SK2:

They don't, audiovox doesn't actually make phones, they simply rebrand and sell them. All those crappy 8 series audiovox phones are actually made by curitel/Hyundai, the 9 series are made by Toshiba (although I haven't seen a new 9 series in awhile), the SK is made by Sharp.

They have now combined with UTStarcom and I know they will be selling their phones as well, but I don't know if they are going to keep the audiovox brand or use UTStarcom

I believe UTS Starcomm / Audiovox also includes Sharp. I've contacted them and they told me they definately REPAIR / Outsource the hiptop 2's but not sure if they manufacture them.

By include do you mean ownership? If that's what you mean, then there's no way Audiovox could own Sharp
