Treo 650 as a gift

First off I'm not a Cingular user, I'm a VZW user, so I don't fully understand GSM SIM card phones, so please cut me some slack.

I'd like to purchase a Treo 650 as a gift for a friend. She already has a Cingular contract and isn't available to renew. On top of that, I don't want her to have to sign up for anything. I'd like for it to be a surprise. Is my only option to pay full price at palmone.com? Are there discount sites that don't require a contract? It can be tied to Cingular, i.e. I don't require it to be unlocked.

Thanks!

Buy it from PalmOne... There isn't anyone that sells it at a discount without contract.

Yeah buying directly from palmone is probably your best route.

Yes, but it will probably cost you more. Last time I checked, in my market, the Cingular Treo 650 is going for about 550 before tax. Last time I was on the Palmone website the unlocked treo 650 was going for 699.99 plus shipping. I would either search online or go into a cingular store.

Or you could get it from Amazon (Phone only , no service plan) comes to 568.10, no shipping, no tax. Like mentioned above - if dealing with live person is important - Cingular (good corporate store) is the place for you.

just buy the phone from a Cingular corp store for $550 plus tax. that would be the easiest way.

Well, its not insurable (as of june 1, when my father picked one up) through cingular. Why buy it through them locked when you can pick it up unlocked? Purchasing it from a best buy type place also gives you the ability to toss in the extended serivce plan so if it's dropped or something it'll be covered. Its quite expensive not to have some kind of coverage for... Keep that in mind.

and to the OP you are a very generous friend

I would not buy from Cingular. If you do, they are sure to require your friend to sign up for a PDA data plan to the tune of about $45/mo. Otherwise she can probably get by with a MEdia Works Unlimited for about 1/2 the price. I dont let Cingular know what I am using.

I bought my Treo650 (unbranded/unlocked) from buy.com. I have bought many things from them over the years, and have found the service to be excellent, and their prices are usually very good as well.

Allot of times if you have a local cellular repair center, they have like new phones, locked and unlocked that people trade in. I bought mine at my local repair center for $350.00 and it was only 40 days old. The people traded it because they left Cingular, moved and Cingular would not take it back. Mine came with all the Palm Desktop software and a cable, as well as everything else that Cingular provides in their original box. They also threw in a case at no charge. I know it was a great deal, but if you look around, they are out there. Good Luck.
