Started using my "new" 6340i with a CIngular 64k SIM card.
Reception good, sound quality in my ear poor in many areas.
Called Cingular TS and got an ex-ATT guy.
Claims GAIT is no longer operable in California; possibly somewhere back east
My problem is: GSM doesnt work in the back country.
Does anyone know how to change the setting in field test 01-13 to read CELL BARR reverse or DISCARD?
Right now my SIM card locks me in to GSM.(Brown according to the ex-ATT TS)
If I unlock this card, can I roam on all the system? i.e. digital, analog and GSM?
ANy other suggestions - other than going back to ATT TDMA @ $99.99 with minimal roaming?

how would a 64k SIM improve your service? AFAIK the 6340 was never made ENS capable

btw- to bar GSM will put you in a bad position as the mobile will be scanning for GSM all the time and kill your battery.

what I want to know is, when is TDMA going to be completely phased outand what percentage is still available right now in the US?

AFAIK the phone was designed to search for GSM bands and TDMA and analog.
the field test screen shows it is barred from searching for anything but GSm.Dont know how a 64k SIm improves my service - that's what I got from Cingular. Some posts say 64k is the way to go - better for battery life etc

Who knows when TDMA will be completely phased out.
The ex-ATT TS (now Cingular TS) told me towers are not being repaired but he admitted there are major gaps in country areas between GSM towers and that's where TDMA is still working - if the towers are working.
I was also told last year that FEMA uses TDMA for emergencies and that is why ATT/Cingular cant get rid of all the towers.

Basically - who knows and who knows who is telling the truth.

Have you tried a SonyEricsson T62u? It is the only other GAIT phone and I know there are unlock codes to remove all network barring on that phone. It was something like *777 powercycle... don't remember but you can find it on google quickly...
