Treo 650 data worries

Ok, so I'm getting ready to replace my current handset with a treo 650. I'm not going to go through cingular and instead get it elsewhere.

Currently I have the unlimited MEdia net and have been tethering my laptop which works great. My worry is that if I do switch to the treo650 and don't tell them so I dont have to upgrade to the PDA connect will I get busted?

Has anyone tried this before, and if so is there anyway they can find out without obviously me telling them?

No...no one has ever tried it...

p.s. - for good measure, .........

if you cant afford to be faced with a possible $200, $300 or even $400 phone bill due to excessive data usage, then you're much better off just to play it safe and get the PDA data plan.

otherwise you know the risk is there.... be fair warned.

If you get one from the Cingular store, I don't know if you could walk out with the phone without the PDA plan. Let me know because I am getting one too.

i remember when I bought my treo 650 at a corp store, and they guy kept trying to put the $40 pda plan and get rid of mh GF MW. i told him if I didnt like this phone I would sell it to my friend. he said oh th einternet would never work without the pda plan...plain bs. but if they catch ya...thats a hefty bill.

I'd goto a non corporate store and see if you can upgrade. Pay em a lil more for the phone. You'll prolly convince em

I'm totally aware of the risk as well as the charges, what I really wanna know is HOW big the risk is.

i.e. is there anyway to tell that you're using a treo from their side, (specific connections, etc.) or do they only find out when you walk into a store holding a treo or call up their customer service asking for help with a phone you shouldn't have.

yes there is, the IMEI number and by the browser you are using, how much data it uses, and how it connects to the internet
