Survey: Macintosh & Razr V3

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Razr42

In my search to find answers to my own Mac/Razr Bluetooth quandary, I've come across conflicting reports, so I thought I'd take an informal survey. In my case, I can pair and sync my PowerBook G4 (Tiger 10.4.1) & brand new Razr V3, but can't browse or push files to the phone. Apple and Moto say the phone isn't supported by OS X, however, some users insist they have no problem doing it all, while still others report a myriad of odd behaviors. So....

Question: Do you have a Mac and a Razr, and if so, what can and can't you do with them? Please include OS version, etc.

Thanks - Razr42

I have a Razr and 12" powerbook G4 and a 20" iMac G5 both with built in bluetooth. I have never had any problems browsing or transferring files back and forth. Could you be a little more specific to the problems you are having???

I had my V3 working brilliantly as BT modem under OSX 10.3. Recently upgraded to Tiger and now have issues. Can no longer function as BT modem - looked everywhere tried everything. Pairs ok, and syncs, but "browse device" and BT modem not workable. Something funky in 10.4, as can no longer BT modem with my other standby T68i which I've used for years as BT modem with the Mac. Desperate for solution!

Delete the phones out of the bluetooth preference panel. Then try to reconnect the phones, that should fix it. if not im not really sure, I know when i upgraded all i had to do was delete my phone and "reinstall" it.

Hi, I got a Powerbook G4 and a Razr, I can sync with iSync, browse the phone, and transfer tones, games, pictures, and video via Bluetooth.
Also using BluePhone Elite, I can write and read SMS from my Powerbook and dial calls!
Too bad that Salling Clicker didn't work with the Razr

I have a black razr with a 17" powerbook running Tiger 10.4.2. I can browse and transfer files but can't sync (have latest iSync). Also when I sync with USB my entries that have multiple number and email address enter the phone as multiple entries. Can I fix this?

thanks

I played with a RAZR for awhile. I had Sync options and file transfer. If you want the Sync to work, your phone need to not be plugged in and running off battery or sometimes it will fail to see the sync.

Are you using iSync or some other program?

Posted by: ehostetler

I'm using iSync. So when I sync up and say there is Joe with a home, work and mobile number, after the sync in my phone there are three entries for Joe instead on 1 including the three numbers.

im not one who gets picky (haha) but wouldnt a survey be more useful with a poll

On your phone...

Select 'PhoneBook' and then press the menu key, scroll down to 'setup' and select it. Scroll down to 'View' and change 'All Contacts' to 'Primary Contacts'

There y'go

Mac: PowerBook G4 800 with 1gig RAM running 10.4.2

V3: Running 42.08R, video recording enabled.

Can:
Use bluetooth modem for dial up networking
Browse V3 with 'Bluetooth File Exchange' (BFE)
Get files from phone with BFE
Put files on phone with BFE (Ringtones, Java games, mp3s....)
Delete files on phone with BFE (In the audio, pictures and video folders)
iSync contacts
iSync calendar to iCal and datebook on phone

Can Not:
iSync 'To Do Lists'*
SMS from address book*

*Not supported in Tiger as of 10.4.2

1. Get the Moto ready to say hello to your Mac

In the your phone's Main Menu, go to Settings, then select Connection, then Bluetooth Link, then Setup. Change Power to On, and then go up to Find Me and select. You can name your phone while you're here, too, but unless you've got another unnamed phone vying for a connection, it isn't necessary. Keep your phone open.

2. Get your Mac to think different about your Moto

In your Mac's System Preferences, select the Bluetooth pane (under hardware), toggle to Devices, and click Set up new device... The Bluetooth Setup Assistant will pop up. Click Continue to get to Select Device Type, and toggle Mobile Phone (not trying to be insulting, but some people prefer not to think while they follow instructions). Click Continue. Your Mac should then find the phone. When it does, click on it -- the name, if you named it, or a bunch of numbers. Hit Continue.

3. Get the Moto paired with your Mac

On your Mac, a pin code will appear in the Bluetooth Assistant. Check out your phone. It will ask you if you want to bond with your Mac. Tell it yes, then enter the pin number. If for some reason something goes awry, it's likely because it took too long -- go back to Find Me and select it again.

4. If you're like me, decide not to decide

Your phone and Mac are paired, now, so you're about ready to put mp3s on it, but your Mac wants to know if you want it to sync your address book and calendar with your phone, and if you want to use your phone to access the internet. If you do, go for it. I did not, so I just unchecked the boxes and moved along. I mean, Continued and, quit the assistant.

5. And, finally, get a freaking mp3 ringtone on the phone

In your Mac's menu bar, click on the Bluetooth icon and select Browse Device. Click on your phone, and then on Browse. Double click on the audio folder, and then, once you're in, the Send... button. If you've had a Mac for longer than it took for you to read these idiotic instructions, you will know how to finish this part of the very rewarding task. Just know that your ringtone has to have the .mp3 extension. Moto no say hello without.

Your ringtone is now with all the other ringtones that came with your phone, so just go back to Audio in your phone's Settings menu and select it as your ring.

I have 10.4.2 and a new (used) razr. I was surprised bluetooth worked with isync, and pissed that I bought a data cable necessary to sync my old (destroyed by ex) V551, and that cable is different for the V3.

ps: I hate Cingular

Update:

Using BT I have uploaded into the three (browse) folders, audio, video and pictures. I have also uploaded several games using send file.

PS Mp3's uploaded into the audio folder can be selected as ringtones.

I have a Powerbook 15" and can sync both the address book and calendar.

What doesn't sync are the Groups in the address book, though the Group names come up in iSync. I've heard this is a bug?

Hi
eMac, OSX 10.4.2
Motorola V710

Why am I getting stuck on the 5th step?
Can't browse, it says after hitting browse: "Device does not have the necessary services"

iSync finds the phone, but says: Device is not supported by iSync

Anybody has any clue?
Help appreciated

thanx

Posted by: Donnation

Verizon put a block on the V710. You cannot transfer ringtones, wallpaper, etc. on this phone unless you buy it from verizon. They crippled the bluetooth so that really its only function is using a bluetooth headset.

Posted by: idea3

Thanks for the reply
I should've been clearer.
I am with Telus. Do they have the same limitations?
Can I hack it?
Thanx again...

Im having trouble using isync with my phone
i tried to add device and it wont detect it when i press scan 50x with my V3 and V80 as discoverable
i can't seem to get my address book to sync, when i opened address book, click that sync icon, it will pair the phones up but it doesnt really update the contacts

Posted by: woogie2k

I had bought a "cheapo" BT module & it stopped working when I upgraded to Tiger... It was kind of hit or miss under Panther. I couldnt browse the phone with BT File Exchange.... But I recently bought a D-Link DBT-120 & it has been MUCH more reliable.

Posted by: evo_lution

Using 12" PwrBk with built-in BT +Tiger with a newish V3.
I simply dragged the BluetoothFileExchange icon into the dock.
To send files i just drag them onto the docked icon
Transferred pics/mp3s+java are auto installed in their correct locations.

OSX 10.4.3 on a Powerbook G4.

I can sync my RAZR with iSync, browse the phone, and transfer tones, games, pictures, and video via Bluetooth. You'll have an issue with iSync if your phonebook is on the SIM (this drove me crazy on my wife's RAZR for an hour).
