8910 Wont play ringtone iv selected

Iv gone under the settings to sound to ringer type set it to the ringer that i downloaded to the phone and it was workin great playin the song for the ringer every time somone called then the other day i hear this weird ringtone playin and i realize its my phone its plays some dumb beeping ringtone now, so i went back to reslected the song for my ringtone and it was still selected so i changed it to some other one then changed it back again thinkin this might reset it or somthin and somone called m e and it used the same dumb beeping ringtone, so a friend told me that i had to go under and under everyones name in my phone book select the ringer that i want for each person and i dont think thas right because if you select just one ringer then it should play that ringtone for all of the contact, correct??? what could the problem be that it wont play the ringtone i have selected for all of my contacts???????????? thanks
