Hmmm just thought about this. Leaving in a week and i just realized this is the first time my Treo has take a ride on a Plane with me! My old SE i would turn off for takeoff/landings and turn on flight mode when in the air... But seeing as the Treo does not turn off do i just turn off the RF and that is it? I mean i know its not going to harm anyhting... But if a flight attendant tells me to turn it off do i remove the battery?

they make you turn off all phones throughout the course of the flight. however, once in the air, you are allowed to turn on approved equipment like cd players, portable dvd players, etc. once they announce that you can use these devices, feel free to use the pda part of the treo, just turn off the radio. if a flight attendant says anything just simply tell them that the phone is off and you are only using it as a pda. ive used my phone several times on planes now and had no problems.

Well yes this i know about the RF not being turned on... But im talking takeoff and landing when they tell you to that everyhting must be off and like 10mins into the flight you can turn electronics on. But the Treo does not turn off! I can simply put it on PDA mode

well then simply just push the power button and the screen will turn off. the treo never really turns off. this will not interfere with anything and its not necessary to take out the battery.

Ive rand into this a few times from various companies. Most of the time I can convice them that the mobile is off but sometimes you'll get those newbies that do not understand and make you put it away. For those, it depends on how well you can give a crash-crouse on smart phones.

Unfortunately (in my opinion) it's usually "freak out" city on an airplane if the attendant doesnt understand that the item is on while the radio part is off.

Someone really ought to do a study on the ability of digital phones affecting airplane controls, and hospital emergency rooms and gas pumps - so if it really is a problem we can know - and if it is'nt then they can LEAVE US ALONE and let use our phones/pda (as long as we use them courteously) wherever and whenever we want to!

And I should add that if airplanes/emergency rooms/gas pumps can't safely have cell phones around them - then they need to change the rules and specifications about how those items are manufatured.....

My guess is that someone has'nt bothered to find out but is being over cautious......and that's why we can't use our phones, etc. in those enviorments.

I know that GSM phones will effect a wireless analog keyboard but I'd tell you want, I catch so many people on planes with their phone still on an Im here tpying this out.

There actually have been some studies done about the effect of cell phones on airplanes, they seem to have a minimal impact on the flight equipment, infact many airlines wanted to try and remove the ban of cell phones. It turns out many wireless carriers are against removing the ban for various reasons. As for the dilema with your Treo, as long as you keep your radio off and the screen blacked out, I would think you would have no problems. Happy Travels!

Since some of us don't have that SE PDA can you please explain difference between 'turn on flight mode' and Treo's way of turning off radio (independent of PDA)?

Furthermore, when you turn off completely SE or any other phone, do you remove battery from it? You think your SE is turned off completely? In reality they are all in standby mode with radio turned off otherwise your alarm or calendar would never work.

You are starting same thread over an over. You could reactivate old one you started before.

Cheers

The SE you could turn off... Then when you turn on (or off) you'd have three options.

1. Phone on
2. Flight Mode
3. Phone off

It was not in standby mode it was off! And what are you talking about im starting the same thread over and over? I have ONE thread about the airplane thing... idiot

Just remembered this link in case anyone else wanted back story on cell phone use with flight.

You can't completely shut down a Treo 600 (for example) without doing the 3 key salute (<- K and reset) and you'd lose what's in the device - the 650 has non volatile memory and a removable battery so you at least wouldn;t lose anything.

I fly about 100,000 miles a year and have only one had a single issue - and that was minor - I showed the attendant the 'wireless mode off' note and she went away satisfied.

I also recently read where a hospital (in Pittsburg IIRC) is installing a cellular repeater to serve it's surgical wing, to allow doctors to use their phones while operating.

If it isn't bad enough to see all of the soccer moms driving their SUVs while discussing liposuction and exchanging sexual advice with their buddies while running stop signs and changing lanes randomly - now we'll see surgeons discussing golf games and fishing trips and dealing with stockbrokers while working on heart transplants.

The issues aren't really all that technical, it's a matter of distraction.

As Sk8Surfr says, form the flight perspective the number of flyers who travel with their phones on (by mistake) has yet to take down a plane - it's more an issue of phones messing up the control channels of cell sites over wide areas. The FCC doesn't seem to have an issue, the cell carriers do.
