S710a - Had a couple questions

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Was given the gift of a brand new Cingular S710a. I've been reading through the forums but a lot of these threads are huge.

I had 2 questions in particular -

My software version is R2A016. Can I unlock this without having to reflash a new version of firmware to my phone? I'd assume I should keep the Cingular version of R2A because it has AMR, etc.

Also - In my service menu it shows under Sim Lock an unlocked pad lock and the number 5 after everything. Does this mean it's already unlocked?

Very impressive phone. It's a shame I have to wait until NOV when I can switch to Tmo. I'm going to use it on Fido while I'm in Canada in August.

And yes, it's the Star Wars Edition, in case anyone was wondering. The box itself and the label under the battery says R2A.

Are all of the padlocks unlocked? If so, your phone is already unlocked.

Yep all of them are unlocked. Kinda funny since the phone was still shrinked and it's a Cingular phone.

That means it's locked.. If the Network one is locked, it's locked to a network.. You would have to get it unlocked.

One cheap and easy way is to send your phone out to Iunlock.com. He can flash and unlock it for you and I believe he was (and still is) an advertiser here. He charges around 40 bucks to unlock and flash it if I recall. The firmware he has is an unbranded Rogers firmware, so you can configure everything right down to the AIM client, to use a service such as Yamigo.com.

They have a cable called a T-28 service cable so you can do it yourself. But the price is roughly the same for the 'service credits' and the cable itself by the looks of it. I'd sooner send it out.

I just unbranded mine the other day.. You can also unlock using the same solution, but you will need 2 credits instead of 1.. bought the cable and the credit from terminatordongle.. Things work as they should, but it didn't work on Windows 2K3 Server, it did on XP though.

My AIM client now lets me use yamigo (www.yamigo.com) by putting the url they list on their site into the SERVER section.. This way you can have AIM, MSN, yahoo, etc. all in one buddy list using the built in AIM client. THIS DOES NOT COUNT AS SMS, it's a data connection. However, I have Tmo Internet, so I can't tell you if it'd work with the 5.99 unlimited Tmobileweb or not, it may.

It's not 'realtime' though, the polling is once every 2 minutes or so and there is a lag in when you send your message to when it reaches its destination.. It does work however without issue.

Another product is IM+ (www.shapeservices.de) which is a J2ME based client for IM. It's 20 bucks flat fee and also works with a data plan. Again, not sure if it works with Tmobileweb, but owuld work with Tmo Internet.

Some other advantages are you no longer have the Cingular logos, also that you can use any J2ME app that works on any port, not just signed ones. In this case, it meant I could use MIDPSSH.

It also removes the Cingular logos in the main menu, instead you have Sonyericsson ones to the S-E website for various downloads for your phone, etc. Most of these cost money, but better than having Cingular all over it.

For the 9 bucks I paid for the credit, and the 11 bucks I paid for the cable, I can say it was worth it just because I can configure things however I want now instead of not being able to see certain features and settings.

Good deal, make sure it's R2A016... The R1A series is slow comparatively.. It's a great phone, I love mine.

It was amusing sitting in the waiting room at the Eyedoc today using SSH to get into one of my servers.
