Cingular SMT Battery issues?

Just curious what you Cingular SMT 5600 users are seeing for battery life.
I bought my phone unlocked wit an AT&T ROM and successfully flashed the Cingular ROM, I'm noticing two big changes.
1. Signal strength in my area (MA) is greatly improved; areas that were previously devoid of a signal are now full strength.
2. Battery life has been essentially cut in half. I can't figure this one out, with the AT&T ROM my handset spent a fair amount of time searching for a signal and the battery would seem to truck on forever. Now my phone won’t last much more than 12 hrs sitting in the same spot with full signal strength. This is after powering off and not using any apps beyond the normal phone functions.
I'm guessing both these results are related to ENS; any thoughts?
