No one's figured out KX1/SoHo ringtones?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: DamnCellPhone!

Been a while now since I posted the first in-depth how to on the KX1/SoHo and I put a challenge in it that if anyone figured out how to get real tone ringers (aka mp3) on it, to let us know how.

So far, noone has figured it out or told us about it.

Every recording setting I've tried, won't work.

Apparently real songs do work because you can get them from RealTone Jukebox and my carrier, CellularSouth is promoting them for this phone.. just trying to figure out how to make my own without paying $2 a song and 24cents per data minute to download it.

The 16,000 sampling doesn't work with this phone nor does renaming .mp3 to .mid so if anyone knows how, tell it! I'm sick of midi ringtones and miss my slider already just for this purpose alone! grrrrrrrrr

It's .mid but it's obviously not a midi file because it's a real tone.. an actual clip of the real song.

I changed the extension to every windows music extension I could think of, including wav, mp3, mp1, mp2, etc. and it just won't play in any software. the only place it will play is on the phone itself.

i tried messing around today. for some reason, whichever data transfer program i try putting the mp3 on the phone with tells me that the file is in use by another program (even if every other program is off- and i've reset the computer) weird. my slider never game me problems like this. if you figure it out, please enlighten me.

Can you e-mail me the ringtone that you downloaded. I'll take a look at it from there. I'll send u a Private Message with my e-mail address

Hi, have you had any luck with the ringtones?

Posted by: natronics

I made a qcp ringtone, changed the extension to .mid and uploaded it to my KX1 SoHo. It shows up and it plays. Unfortunately, it will only play through the earpiece unless I turn on the speaker manually. When I close the flip and call the phone it plays faintly from the earpiece. Anyone have an idea how to fix this?

Posted by: Tech_Junkie

you need to make it a PMD file. Damncellphone and I figured out how to sucessfully load ringtones to the phone. He knows how to do it better then i do....Damncellphone, would you mind posting a tutorial??

Posted by: natronics

I installed a demo of Ringtone Jukebox from Alltel's Axccess Apps and previewed a ringer. I was actually able to copy the pmd file from the temp dir to my computer with EFS Explorer. QPST seems to work better with this phone than bitpim. KPD will install pmd ringtones.

I figured all this out today after work. Thanks for the heads up.

You can download CMX studio here:

www.moderati.com/auth_cmx.html

Creating a PMD Ring Tone

1. Take the song file you want to use and edit out a 16sec piece for your ring tone. The final product should be a 16sec WAVE file. The reason for the 16sec file is anything longer tends to be bigger than 30k.
2. Load CMX Studio and select CMX 3.0. If the program doesn’t ask you on start up go to File – PMD File Properties (Ctrl+F) and select CMX 3.0 for version.
3. You have to Insert-wave, not open the wav file.
4. Drag your WAVE file to the beginning of Time Bar in the Layout section. Notice the Start Time and Volume. The start time minimum value is 00:00.010. Also make sure your Volume value is up.

5. If you want your song to repeat over and over as your phone rings you will need to create a Loop. Click on the Loops tab and drag Infinite Loop down to the Beginning Time Bar in the Layout section. Click on the Infinite Loop on your Time Bar and notice the Start Time and End Time. These times must match your wave file to loop the entire song. Uncheck Lock Length and make the Start and End time the same as your wave. Now your Wave and Loops should be the same length on the Time Bar.

6. At any given time you can go to File – Estimate .PMD Size to see if you have gone over the 30k limit.
7. Go to File – Save As… and save your file as xxxxx.pmd . In Windows explorer the file will say “CMX Document”, but will save on phone as .pmd file.
8. Use QPST EFN Explorer or KPD or Bitpim to copy it to your ringers dir on your phone.

The original version of this tutorial(with pictures) is here:

http://home.comcast.net/~londonblai...D_Ring_Tone.doc

I modified it slightly to reflect KX1 SoHo parameters. I'm not sure about the 30kb file size limit, you can experiment. Also, the ringer folder may vary by carrier. KPD puts it in the right place on my Alltel phone.

Thanks to everyone who helped point me in the right direction. Corrections and/or additions are welcome.

Hi, it work great, I uploaded a few about 50K and no problems at all, thanks a lot

Posted by: natronics

Glad I could help.

Posted by: DamnCellPhone!

Odd... I didn't get my usual email notices that the topic had been replied to. Sorry to leave you hanging Junkie... and everyone else. natronics did a good job on the tutorial. better keep this tutorial around too if you're planning on getting the new Slider Remix because it'll use the same if you want real music playing on your new Remix instead of polyphonic (midi) ringtones. Won't be much longer for the Remix because my provider, Cellular South, already has them in hand testing them on their network. Will be a shame to give up my SoHo. I love it. But I'll ditch it for the new Remix... just wished the generic Remix looked as good as the Jet Remix for Amp'd Wireless.

how i go about inserting a song from my music folder? do i change the .mp3 to .wav? my new problem is now that i changed the a song from mp3 to wav just by changing the file ext. and when i go to insert the song its says that the inserted data did not generate any content. any ideas what i did wrong?

Posted by: RodolfoGH

Hi jtc982, you need to convert a mp3 to wav not just change the file ext. check natronics comment and tutorial. It work for me.

Posted by: jtc982

i was using natronics tutorial and i could not get cmx studio to loop a certain part of song. when i try to use the loop it always starts at the beginning of the song. also when i try to check the size of the song the size doesn't change. any idea what hell i am doing wrong?

Posted by: RodolfoGH

have you re-install CMX, it appears that it has some problems..... my has not shown does errors... , try unistalling CMX and install it again

Posted by: greenlime812

do you think realtone jukebox uses this same format for all phones, so would PMD files work on mine (moto v265) im assuming noibody will answer soooo...ill check myself

Posted by: RodolfoGH

I don't know about the Motorola phone, but what i use to convert the mp3 to wav is winamp with a plug in.

Posted by: jtc982

i got the ringtones to work on my phone i used this program called wave pad to cut my songs for ringtones. it was alot easier to use then sony sound forge 8 then i used cmx studio to loop the song and change it to a pmd file.

Posted by: xeroxed

is when you preview the file CMX, the same sound quality when it plays from the phone?

Posted by: ahanix1989

For the most part, yes. There will be some differences as your PC speakers are much better than the cell phone's speaker. It's simply playing what the file sounds like at the proper quality setting

Posted by: abuthemagician

After playing with some stuff, is there a way to convert to a non ADPCM wav file?

Posted by: abuthemagician

To make mine using this process i use the Windows Sound Recorder to edit the length, then i save the file as a Microsoft ADPCM file, then within CMX i go to file and choose convert to ADPCM. Then when you save the file it will sound pretty close to the original mp3 or wave file you started with

I Need Help Getting Rintones To Work On My Soho From Verizon I Got The Phone To Be Recognized By Qspt I Used The File Tree Added Ringers But I Cant Get Them To Show Up When I Reboot My Phone. Posted by: SCOTTRO401

witch software are you using iam using qpst iam puttinjg them in the right space

Posted by: abuthemagician

i have used both qpst and bitpm to add them (using the file explorer of course...) What format are the files in?

Posted by: Cybrwolf

Natronics,

Thanks for the tutorial! I was able to convert the WAVE, upload the PMD file, and it does show up, and play, on the phone. But! The quality is horrible!!! I have tried down-sampling a DVD Audio Rip (max quality, 15 seconds) all the way down to the lowest possible WAVE settings, and upon CMS Studio's convert I get a ton of noise. I am using the "3.0" setting that you suggest. Do you have any suggestions?

Posted by: abuthemagician

did you read what i wrote about saving it as an MS ADPCM then telling the program to convert to ADPCM under the file menu, then importing yer songs?

Posted by: Cybrwolf

Abuthemagician, after seeing your post, I re-read the whole thread, and alas, I see what you are talking about. I will try this tonight, and let you all know. (But I'm sure your right on the mark, about my mistake)

Thanks.

Posted by: abuthemagician

no problem... it took me a while to figure just that out. It won't sound 100% perfect but i would give it an 8.5 out of 10

Posted by: natronics

Sound quality is greatly dependent on your original source. Some kinds of music just work better. It helped mine to normalize them using the RMS method to compress the dynamic range. Fairly loud to make them audible, but not too loud or they will distort. Then convert to an 8-bit mono PCM wave. PMD is a highly compressed format so it will never sound as good as some of the MP3 capable phones. Just try to get it sounding as close as you can to how it will sound from the phone before you convert it. The simpler and more stripped down the sound is, the better it will sound on the phone. Some trial and error is to be expected.

thank you for the walkthrough! i managed to follow along, all the way until i had to move the file to my phone. i'm trying to use the kyocera phone desktop but for some reason it won't upload. it says that it is, but it doesn't show up on my phone.

is anyone willing to help me?

Posted by: abuthemagician

Don't use KPD to upload. You can use either Bitpim or KPST to get them on to your phone.

Posted by: kdozon

^^ thank you!

alright.. i'm really sorry, i'm truely not trying to be a pain, but where can i get KPST.. i googled but couldn't find any downloads.. any help is sooo greatly appreciated, i will be eternally gateful.

Posted by: abuthemagician

just do a search in the forums for kx1 and you'll find it in one of the KX1 soho posts

Posted by: kdozon

alright, mission accomplished! thank you, abuthemagician!

Posted by: abuthemagician

no problem... hey did tetris come with your phone?

Posted by: kdozon

no it didn't.. but i'm pretty sure you can order it by month through the applications catalog

Posted by: KITTcrazyphone

HELP!!!! Can some one help me find somewhere i can download ringtones and wallpapers for free, please im almost despreate.
KITT.

Posted by: ahanix1989

If you have a data cable, just download MIDI / PNG files. If you don't, you'll need to create a WAP page with your ringtones (Or just a directory listing, some phones support that)

Posted by: KITTcrazyphone

i have no idea what youre talking about. i dont even have easyedge. i want songs and wallpaper that i can get free through Us Cellular on the computer internet, Please, im now desperate........
