Device (with WiFI and EDGE) for email and web email ONLY?

Any suggestions for a Sidekick type device that,

1) has WiFi so I can take advantage of faster speeds at home and, say, at an airport.

2) has a keyboard for email and whatnot.

3) has EDGE so I can take advantage of Cingular's faster speeds over Tmobile's GPRS.

Oh, and any info on Cingular's unlimited EDGE data only plans would be nice.

Will be using it for email and web email ONLY.

Some devices have either or (i.e., EDGE or Wi-Fi), but currently none have both.

I think the Siemens SX66 has wi-fi but no EDGE. If they ever made a Samsung i730 in GSM format would be nice. It has wi-fi and EDVO for VZW now. :rolleyes2

You are correct. If it had EDGE (class 10), I would have scouped it up a long time ago. Motorola was also planning to release (the now dead) MPx; it too had Wi-Fi, but no EDGE.

what is better to have EDGE or wi-fi???

At this point, Cingular doesn't seem to be an option because they won't do a data only medianet plan, so EDGE is pretty much out considering Tmobile isn't quite there yet.

My 9500b has both Wifi and EDGE as well as a full qwerty keyboard and is for sale.

Is that the Nokia 9500 with 850? Why are you selling it?

Yes with 850 and I prefer my ppc and phone combo.

I think that's the direction all this is taking me. Thing is, I don't need the super functionality that these Windows Mobile OSes offer. I just want a competent web browser. The thing doesn't even have to connect by itself if I can use my phone as a modem through Bluetooth.

The screen is the biggest problem, and the more research I do the more I see that, having keyboards, the Sidekick/Blackberry type devices don't have the screens to do what I want them to do.

It seems the best way to get a large enough screen for mobile (read: disconnected from computer desk) HTML browsing and web email is to get some kind of PDA with WiFi for network usage that also has Bluetooth capability to use my 6230 as a modem when mobile.

Giving up the keyboard for screen real estate wouldn't be bad if I could use T9 for text input during email usage...but I doubt that functionality exists.

So, PDA type device with a larger screen, WiFi, and Bluetooth linking to my phone for modem use, and a true HTML browser.

Any suggestions on this front?

EDIT: I want to be clear about something, and that's that I can get a new laptop for ~$400. But, I'd like to keep the device small and relatively maintenance free.

I'm looking at the Dell Axim line now...though I wonder about the screen and HTML browsing.

Yes I just love my HX4700 ppc. It's got the most amazing screen and video playback. Largest screen at 4" of any ppc with VGA resolution.

OK, it seems a VGA screen is key. Have you had a QVGA screen before you got the HP? If you did, does the VGA just give you smoother visuals or does it really give you more screen real estate under Windows?

Actually windows mobile 2003 isn't really fully compatible with VGA so HP didn't give you the VGA screen without installing a third party software. Once you change the screen to VGA everything becomes too small to really use. It's great for web browsing but you need to do a soft reboot to change it back and forth. I believe windows mobile 2005 that's gonna be available as an upgrade for the HX4700 this summer will change all that.

LifeDrive. PalmOS, Wifi, bluetooth, 4gigs, screen viewable in landscape (has a special button), etc etc. Only down side for me is you have to charge the battery every other day or so (I still manage to check e-mail every halfhour by bluetooth, watch an hour & 1/2 movie, get 15-30 minutes of web browsing in, & still have battery left to use the datebook!)

You can get one for between $400-450 online...or $499 retail.

PS: Screen info - 65,000-color, 320x480 Transflective TFT display

PalmOS is a glorified calculator.

(Many years ago, I was a proud owner of an 8meg Casiopeia running WindowsCE. Well, about a year later, Microsoft decided it wasn't worth supporting WindowsCE anymore and came out with PocketPC...no more for me...programs I've owned for my Palm V have worked on every Palm since then...

Also, I use a large amount of psych & med programs, which Palm has an abundance of...)
