Just wanted to see if anyone has the Audiovox smt5600, and if so, how do they like it? I Heard alot of problems with the Motorola MPX220, even the cingular rep at a store said they recalled them and should be getting the new ones next month, so he claims. I have cingular now and not able to upgrade yet, but well, need to some input on the Audiovox smt5600.
thanks

Ron

From what I heard and researched, SMT 5600 is a great phone at a reasonable price. If you like Windows Mobile, you'll like the phone. IT doesn't have much bugs compare to 220.

I don't own the phone but was interested a while back and did some research on it.

The only issue I recall with the SMT5600 was dust getting under the screen.

Whether this still an issue with the SMT5600 or it was resolved in later manufacturing runs I don't know. Maybe some of the users who have recently purchased one can tell us...

Wirelessly posted (MPX220: MOT-MPx220/1.430 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; Smartphone; 176x220))

It's a good little phone from what I've read. Played with one in the store. Nice and small, great screen. media player 10 is a plus, also the real possiblity of getting windows mobile 5.0. Joystick is a little small for gaming, if that matters. Might get one for the wife, as I'm currently happy with my 220.

Most of the 220 bugs are fixed in the new ROM, FWIW. Main differences are triband vs quad, bar vs flip. 220 has a better joystick. Either phone would be a good choice.

I don't like it, I find it too slow and I've locked it up while trying to send pictures via bluetooth.

Is there any reason you want a ms based smart phone?

Not really, Just looks like a neat phone. I have a OEM V600 now with a really old sim card that allows network selection. I was playing with the smt5600 at a store the other day, and notice it too, has network selection, but the salesman says, it's because it has a very old sim. He also told me that, my old white sim, that I am using now will be barred from the cingular system, in about a year, as there switching from 1900 to 850. He says my sim doesn't see the 850 and won't. I don't want to loose my sim, as I like the network select option. I live near the mexico,US border, and want to manualy choose Cingular or AT&T. If left on automatic, it will get Telcel, the mexican tower.

even though there is network selection it does not work at least not on my phone i even did some hacks and it stays on the same network mine stays on att towers even though there is and orange tower stonger. probably has to do with the nation wide sim card

That's what really gets me on the MS Smartphones. After using the Nokia 6230...the non-edge phone are just not acceptable.

P.S. Anyone want to but a like new 5600 w/1GB card???

I have recently moved to the SMT5600 back in May after being on Suncom TDMA for years...I wanted a WM device b/c I've never liked the thought of carrying a PDA around and this gave me a nice hybrid of phone and PDA in a very small device. Having it double as my portable MP3 player is a super nice add as well.

Someone mentioned the dust issue and whether newer owners had the same problem. I'm not sure from reading posts here over the last couple of months if there is a general consensus regarding how long it takes to get tons of dust under the screen, but I can say that so far, I don't have much at all. I see a couple (2) significant specs under the screen, but I only see them when the screen is OFF, otherwise they blend into the backlighting. I regularly carry my phone, alone and also in the OEM case, in my pocket.

In my opinion, if you just need a phone, any WM device is way overkill. The 'neato' factor is there, but the phone has some drawbacks (interface speed, startup/shutdown, nav button, very small keys, too complex for simple use) that prevent it from being a really good 'phone only' device.

All that being said, I love mine, but again, I'm using it as a phone/PDA hybrid and for that, it is flat out awesome...I sync w/ contacts on my home PC and calendar w/ my work PC...I use pocket streets on it along w/ net access for things like weatherbug. I also plan on adding a GPS (probably copilot) for traveling. Having tons of capability to update w/ new software or write your own, and to have a highly customizable device, you cant go wrong w/ a WM phone.

Also, the EDGE issue, I can see this being an issue for heavy data usage, but again, if you are looking for primarly 'phone only' then this isn't a big deal...I for one and looking forward to WM5 devices that take advantage of EDGE...I'm going to seriously look at these once they are out and consider upgrading to get higher data speeds in order to tether to my notebook when on the road.

Well, I just bought mine yesterday. I love it. Has better reception then my oem v600. I can do network selections and searches, since my sim is old as the hills, but will only hold that network for about 5-10 minutes. I live close to the mexican US border, I need that feature as the mexican towers are much stronger than cingular along the border. But I just look before I call and select and go. I will be moving in December farther away from the border, so I will buy the new sim, and should get alot better service, at least thats what the rep told me. Love the way the phone hooks up to the computer and do calender and email sincs. Its a great phone.
