Audiovox SMT 5600 won't boot at all--HELP!

I have had an Audiovox SMT 5600 (unlocked and set up for T-Mobile) for many months now with no problems. The other day the battery ran out of power (I think) and I recharged it. Now the phone won't boot. Will go the "Windows Mobile" splash screen and no further. There is no reference to a reset function in the PDF user's guide, but I have removed and reinserted the battery several times. No joy.

Any pointers greatly appreciated. It's a nice phone but I need it to work! Has it failed completely, or is there a way to reload everything?

TIA.

To do a hard reset, press and hold both soft keys, then press the power key. The Audiovox logo will come up, then you will get a screen that states to press 0 to clar the phone, any other key to exit.

Hi,

Thanks for the info. I am able to get the black screen asking to press "0", but it still won't reboot. Pressing the "0" while still holding the 2 soft keys, just starts a loop where the pop-up comes up again (and again, and again). However, if I let got of the two soft keys and try to press "0" it just goes to the normal Audiovox splash screen and then on to the "Windows Mobile" screen and freezes. I've also tried pressing the "0" while still holding the two soft keys and then letting them go, but still no reboot. I've let it go for 5-10 minutes in hopes that it was just taking a long time to reboot--do I need to let it go longer?

I've had the phone on the charger overnight, so I'm assuming that the battery is OK...but I have no way of knowing for sure. If I try to do a hard reset while it is plugged into the charger, the black pop-up screen never shows up--it just goes to the Audiovox splash to the Windows Mobile splash and then hangs.

Any further advice?

TIA.

A hard-reset should take no more than 2 minutes tops before the main screen appears.

Your only other option at this point would be to attempt to re-flash the phone using a Cingular ROM image that's "in the wild"-your best bet is to truck over to the Typhoon section at http://www.modaco.com and read up on the process. But since you already did a hard-reset and had no joy, I'm suspecting that something in the hardware is so far out of spec the OS doesn't know what to do and is looping in a routine somewhere and can't complete it's initialization. Also, there may be coding changes in that version of the OS that your phone may not support at the hardware engineering level, should you decide to go don the re-flashing path.

If you are a Cingular customer, you could XBM the phone-but if I recall, you're on T-Mobile. If that is the case, your only other real option is shipping the phone off to UTStarcom/Audiovox with a proof-of-purchase so they can at least warranty repair the phone.

I wish I had better news.
