I have tried many times to get this function to work. While typing in text I hit the * button to switch the modes but I never get the symbol mode. Has anyone come across this issue?

You have to 'press and hold', just hitting it doesn't work. I haven't had a problem on my 5600, I guess you could also have a defective model.

For symbols you 'press and hold' the # key, The * key gives you T9 or abc typing....
