Hi, I am looking for a datacable for the 8940, on ebay theres a couple packages for 8940 that cost over $20. There is also cheap 8900 data cables, will those work for the 8940 with the usb drivers from the yahoo groups? Thanks.
Also, when I first got my phone, using ##browser menu, entering proxy ips on all 3 uplinks, 80/8080 ports, then homepage as wap.yahoo.com worked, but now whatever I do it doesn't works, have tried changing new proxy ip addresses... error msg is For Wireless Internet Services, please dial *611. any help on this? thanks.

The cable that I have is for the 8900. I am not aware of any cable made specifically for the 8940. Most of the cables advertised for the 8940 on Ebay, are actually made for the 8900, but work for both.
As far as the internet... I have not tried using the "free" internet, but my guess is that Verizon is catching on. They no longer let you use your phone as a modem (to connect to a laptop) without paying for it. So my guess is that they are trying to stop the free WAP access as well. Just a guess though.

thanks for the feedback.. now finding a 8900 cable is much easier than a 8940..

They won't be able to block free wap without hard codeing the IP addresses and Port numbers to the firmware. This would present a major problem though. They would never be able to change IP addresses of thier servers as that would render all phones useless for WAP. Or, they would have a big influx of people needing it reset at all stores. Something that would heavily waste thier money in man power and resources. Negating the need to lock down free wap.
If you move to a new area, you will probably need to change the IP address again also. Again, requiring a store visit which would put more burden on the company than it's worth.
So as long as you can set the IP Addy and port on the phone yourself, they will never be able to block free WAP. Atleast, as far as I can speculate.
The problem with free WAP is that it's a pain to setup and find working ip's.

Verizon has figured out that people are getting free WAP, so they are turning off the IP address of your phone untill you pay the $4.99/month...
WAP isn't really all that great anyway, since Verizon blocks downloads from all WAP sites anyway...
