I work for a Roger AT&T dealer and have heard mixed things about this phone. Some people wanna break it in half and other people would never want to get it up ....

I bought mine on impulse... It was basically what I was looking for, a simple phone with USEFUL features (no games, no polyphonic ringtones). Since then I've read nothing but bad press about it. But, I'd have to say, I'm pretty happy with it.

At first I feared that my coverage issues were phone, as well as provider based, but after sampling a selection of other phones from friends on fido with my Rogers SIM, I'd have to say that it's 99% provider. The only phone that fared better RF wise was a T28, and only marginally (it could grab a signal, but still couldn't carry a call).

#1 complaint I have read is buggy firmware. I have had a total of 1 reset in 3 months. That I can live with, but lets hope it doesn't go the way of my 3360 and become exponentially worse.

Biggest plus with this phone over any other phone I've tried: Sound quality. There's a slight background hiss, but as an experiment, I called *611 on all the phones... the little jingle when you call is MUCH better sounding on the S40. Again, this is subjective. But I like it. Much "richer" sound than the others.

Battery life is fine. Even sitting in class all day with no signal (searching... searching... searching... there's no in-building coverage here. period) I might lose a bar in about 4-6 hours. Talk time is pretty well on par with other phones I've seen. I can't compare it to the only other phone I used regularly, the 3360, because that phone spent half it's life on ANALOG (grrr))

So, what negatives?

-Buttons are... squeaky... for lack of a better word, and the side up/down buttons aren't as solid as the others on my phone.

-My charger SQUEALS... Anyone else have this problem. It's loud enough I had to move it across from my bed.

-No GPRS, and no CSD with rogers...

-Unlocking is an issue. I'm having trouble finding someone who will do it for a REASONABLE rate without flashing. $80 is unreasonable IMO.

Don't know if that was more info than you wanted. I've found a lot of the negative reviews I've read deal with issues I've never seen (hanging, bad call quality, poor battery life). And some are just on crack: http://www.cell---phone.com/ being a good example...

-to answer the original question? the S40... one of the phones that decided to keep... although it's older, I also have an 8890 that I decided to keep as well... if you look at my current collection, it's pretty diverse, and I can say that the S40 is one of the rare little gems out there that I like, but lots don't. oh well... I've never had any problems with mine, (which I got from Fido, and was unlocked originally) and it has older firmware too, 3.2.0

-the RF is on par with my old 8290 and pretty much same performance as an 8890... but that's just my experience... although it's a backup for me, I still keep it around for it's looks, which are unique, and functionality... Triband for the price that you can get one for now? nice. and still very much a competitive phone if you're not looking for the latest gadgets and offerings. A very good buy for an international phone that can make calls and receive...

Thanks for your input guys !! You've been really helpful.

I have decided not to go with the phone. It lacks features such as GPRS and games and doesn't seem stable enough to run on Rogers' GSM network.

I am now going to look into getting an 8390.

I think that the buttons are just too rubbery of a feel. Not very good for SMS cause u have to press down hard and u dont get any tactile feedback, or a click response like on my sansung s105.
