Yep, same here. When ever I try to save or delete the factory sounds I get the error screen. Anyone successfully delete their sounds?

I had to replace the usbser.sys file as described on that link given above before I could get into some of the folders without errors.

How much memory do the stock photos take up?

Posted by: cain0

$1 paypal to whoever can help me deleted these annoying stock sounds!

Posted by: RLG07734

i don't think they can be deleted. they are in the rom_alert folder called predef01, predef02, etc. I have not tried to delete them because I don't know where the index file holding the names would be, and I don't want to screw up the operation of the ring styles.

Send me a flex backup made by Motokit and I'll devote a few hours into looking at deleting those

Posted by: RLG07734

i did some digging. Not that you can delete them BUT...
if you download them using BitPim, you will find that they are standard MIDI files (just add .mid extension to each of them and they will play through Winamp).
What you CAN do is get a desireable midi file, rename it to predef?? without an extension and send it to the phone.

Posted by: szeny

meh.. these are not whgat im taklin about.. predef i dunno wtf taht is but i want ambient mood dynamic, energize, high impace, moonlight haze, motion, passion, power surge ,this is techno, and velvet GONE

yah know, they really dont take up that much space....just dont use em...

Posted by: luiset83

for anyone having issues with not being able to access some folders under bitpim the usbser.sys solution posted at the beginning of this thread really does work! I'm able to access /motorola/system now!

Posted by: szeny

cant delete sounds buddy.. i can read the directory fine

Posted by: Flying h4x0r

You can delete them using BREW AppLoader, which you can get at inetron.com

Posted by: five

Well I was able to delete the pics, but now I have a red X where they were:

Of course I forgot to back up the dir before I started deleting, so now I don't know what to do. Ideally I'd like to get rid of the excess of pictures, but if not, I'd at least like to put the stock photos back on.

Can you provide more information about this?

Also, are their two instances of these files, one named with a .mid extension and the other starts with pref.

Thanks.

Posted by: ShiftyEyedGoat

if one uses bitpim is it still possible to take the phone in to be software updated?

That's the only reason I'm not doing more seem updates than the OBEX/file card transfer..

Fired it up, (first time), is it really as simple as this looks? That is follow the file tree down to those pics and sound files then highlight those that your going to want to exit and then right click then select delete?

Thanks.

BrewApploader only works up to Comm4. I think my phone is detected using Comm18.

Posted by: Striker51

Well I got BREWapploader to work and deleted the stock ringtones and they aren't listed in Sounds but when I go to Contacts and list a ringtone to a contact they are still listed there but with no sound. Anyone know how to delete the name from there?

....didn't someone mention a dollar via paypal to the guy that figures this out?

I think it can use com ports 1 - 4, and you can change the com port that the phone uses in device manager...

Posted by: Flying h4x0r

i think you have to edit your voiceDB.dat file... i haven't tried that... i don't know if it will work

another thing you can try is sending a file with the same name as the previous file to the phone, and then deleting it normally because it won't be protected anymore... which may or may not work.

I'll try these later when i'm home later on...

Posted by: szeny

ya who wants their dollar? its whoever told me to use brewloader

Brewloader didn't work for me... deduct 50 cents!

Just curious....Why do this at all? Doesnt a transflash card make this kinda moot?

Personally...
  1. I don't plan to get TF anytime soon...it's a phone for cryin' out loud
  2. I hate all those stupid stock rings and only plan on using 2-3 total.
  3. It's a pain to have to scroll through a list of files you'll never want to use
  4. I'm a neat freak...if I don't need it, it shouldn't be there.

brew apploader.. DONE.| thanks everyone!

Posted by: Skywarp

Yeah, I did this when I first got my phone with Apploader, alot easier than dealing with BitPim.

Posted by: ilvla2

I kinda like those animations, and they work in standard SMS, very nice when you are on Extended Network (in my case, US Cellular) like I am much of the time (like at my house, where Verizon has a HUGE dead spot), where data and mms don't work

Posted by: MIRRORMIRROR

Same here, thanks for the nudge to BREW loader, works.

Just canned those ugliest in hell stock images that VZW idiot addicts install a lot of. Man what a lame thing to do to this phone, those stock images are as stupid as it gets, glad to got rid of those foolish things.
Ringtones are really no big deal to me, there are a few i can do without though. Is there a simple way to erase those out of this handset also?

Someone claimed to be able to do so...but I'm doubting that. I have a feeling that area of memory is read-only. It's a shame that phones come loaded with a bunch of useless crap.

Doesn't work for me; gives an error on those predefXX files.

I don't think it's possible to modify the rom_* directories at all. Any attempted permission changes don't stick and files can't even be written to those directories.

BrewApploader will erase the ringtones and the names from your "Sounds" category. But if you go to "Contacts" and assign
a ringer to a person's name, the ringtone name is still there but it won't play a sound. Wish we could get rid of the name in there, also.

Posted by: Flying h4x0r

i see...

if you don't wnat the delted songs to show up in that menu, then you have to open your MyTonesDB.db with a Hex Editor, and overwrite all the default names with 00s

EDIT: i'll see what i can do about uploading my MyTonesDB.db after i delete everything

I found a much easier way.

1. back up all your ringtones to your computer
2. use Brew AppLoader to delete ALL the files in the shared/audio folder
3. use BitPim to delete MyToneDB.db
4. restart your phone
5. load your ringtones back on

As you can see, the MyToneDB.db file will be restored, but contain only information on the files you load back on.

When you go to assign a ringtone to a person, you're ringtones are on there, but the factory ones we deleted arn't.

when the e815 came out, someone posted that if you delete the MyToneDB.db file, it kills obeymoto. does yours still work?

Posted by: Flying h4x0r

Yes, my obeymoto works.

After i deleted MyToneDB.db, and reuploaded my ringtones, and restarted the phone, MyTonesDB.db restored itself.

I think the obeymoto bug was linked to deleting all your Quick Texts...

now i'm trying to figure out how to get rid of those stupid alerts like "Cosmic"... and "Interlude".... and "Chimes Up"...
not because i need more space, but because they're stupid, and are very annoying to scroll through.

i was hoping the MyToneDB.db trick would have taken care of them... oh well

what port is your phone on?

You check by going to the Device Manager (Start -> Run -> devmgmt.msc) and go to Modems, and find Motorola USB Modem. Double click that, and on then a window will popup. Go to the Advanced tab, and click Advanced Port Settings, and at the bottom of that window will be a COM port setting.

You might have to change it becasue Brew Apploader only recognizes ports 1 - 4

The V710 users have been using BitPim all along ... I've not even seen anything but a passing mention of Brew Loader untill the other day.

You will need to replace your usbser.sys files with the 8/8/2000 version to access the motorola/shared/picture directory though.
Mark V has a good page if you get stuck:

I was referring to this thread in particular. Thanks for the help, I'll give BitPim try.

I actually got the Brew app to work. I deleted the pics, but all the musical ring tones would not delete. They were shown as deleted in the Brew screen, but still show up on my phone. They don't work though. They are just listed. I may try to remove them with BitPim. But those don't bother me like the pictures did.

Posted by: MIRRORMIRROR

Those stock pics were the lousiest bunch of crap that verizon's crack heads could possibly have put in them, and those lame brain commanders approved them. Makes you confident in what they are all about eh?

Ditto. I got a similar error while trying to delete stock ringtones using BitPim.
Tried it with BREW App Loader, but it just won't delete.
FYI all my usbser.sys files are correctly dated (yr 2000)
Any solutions?

Posted by: MIRRORMIRROR

Once again i'll say, in BrewAppLoader check and confirm the ports (4 of them) try them all, mine worked on comm4 and no others.

Can't say for BitPim.

So..., I deleted all the files in my motorola/shared/audio dir. Later I realized that also deleted my 'scroll tones'. I had copies of the tone files (ui_electron.mp_, etc.) so I put them back on my phone. However, my scroll tones still don't work. Does anyone know if I deleted a prefs file or something? And, if I did, can someone post it here? Thanks is advance. I know they're pretty stupid sounds, and it's not a big deal if I can't get them back. Also, when I deleted all the files in that directory I also deleted my pictures and my mytonesdb.db files, maybe that has something to do with it? (I know, I should have made a backup copy first, but I was in a hurry.)

Thanks again,

Chris

I downloaded Brew Apploader and ran it. Tried to backup the photos in Motorola/shared/pictures directory. Wanted to back them up before I deleted them. I opened File/copy from device/set path, and started the backup. Got an error message that said "Cannot Read from Device". The phone seems to be connected. I was able to load the software with files from the phone. Any suggestions?

where did you download it from? try inetron.com and make sure the version is SD.01 or something along those lines. if all else fails, use bitpim to back them up, but brewapploader to delete.

I thought that Brew Apploader wasnt plagued with the usbser.sys problem. But that sure sounds like the usbser.sys thing.
Try the usbser.sys link on Mark V's page: www.v710.org/mark

That's exactly the symptoms of the usbser.sys thing. Until replacing the usbser.sys file, you cannot access the motorola/shared directories, but other directories you can access just fine.

But I'm not sure if that's an issue with Brew Apploader too. You obviously have the 8/8/2000 version of usbser.sys on your pc if you've deleted pics using BitPim. But you can't access those folders using Brew Apploader? That would mean that it isn't a usbser.sys thing.

EDIT: oh, you were on different pc's ... lol ... so I guess usbser.sys is an issue with Brew Apploader too.

If I am able to copy off the photo files with BitPim what would I use to reinstall them if I ever wanted to? BitPim?

Nope. You can only overwrite files on the phone with BitPim. You cannot create/upload new one's (same with Brew Apploader, I believe).

If you do a seem edit, you could use MPT or OBEX to transfer the pics back to the motorola/shared directory.

But, you could simply put the pics on the TF card and Move/Copy them to the phone.

But, you could simply put the pics on the TF card and Move/Copy them to the phone.

I guess the moral of this story is that there is no need to backup the photos at all unless you plan to seem edit.

Ok, i just tried it on a computer with SP2, and i can't copy from the pictures or audio directory.. but i can download from rom_vdb, but NOT rom_alert... its weird

Thanks guys no more pics from Ms Gardner's 3rd grade art class.

Posted by: DoN_BLaZe34

brew apploader seems to read my phone but i don't know where to go to delete the ringers...

Posted by: DoN_BLaZe34

bump...could really use some help here...

Posted by: Chris000001

The ringers should be in 'motorola\shared\audio'. While you're that directory could you see if there are any files that might have something to do with 'Scroll tones'? I know there are 4 files: 'ui_ice.mp_', 'ui_electron.mp_', 'ui_scratch.mp_' and 'ui_smooth.mp_'. I deleted the whole audio directory and when I moved those 4 back my scroll tones still didn't work. If you see something else please post here.

Thanks,
Chris

Posted by: DoN_BLaZe34

i don't even see that directory though...

Posted by: Chris000001

Do you at least have a folder on the left named '/' that you can click on to open other folders? If not, I doubt you are actually talking to your phone. You should check the device manager to see what port the 'Motorola usb modem' is on. It has to be on one between 1 and 4. If not, you have to change it. Then, in Brew apploader make sure the ports match. If they do, and it still doesn't work, you probably need to change your 'usbser.sys' file in 'windows/system32/drivers' directory with the old one. It's somewhere on this forum I believe. If you haven't done that, and can't find the file, I can attach it.

If it's none of that stuff, I don't know what else to try.

Posted by: DoN_BLaZe34

my issue is apparently brew apploader's reading the phone, but the directory for the 'motorola\shared\audio' directory is nowhere to be found...the only directories i have are:
-4972
-download
-es
-fr
-mailer
-mediaasf
-pt
-verizonmediaplayer
-zhcn

Posted by: Chris000001

except for -4972 and -download, all the others are in my 'brew' directory. 3 folders down from that one is where I have 'motorola' and in there 'shared', etc. I attached a screenshot of what mine looks like.

Posted by: DoN_BLaZe34

this is odd...none of those folders appear in a brew directory for me...

Posted by: mchlwise

May be a dumb question, but I'm guessing you can't do this over Bluetooth, huh?

not to my knowledge....

chris, i finally got it working...apparently i was using some dumb version of brew apploader..i just downloaded another one and it works fine now...i'm scared to delete the directory since you said u lost your scroll tones....has anyone else had this issue?

also, you forgot the 'ui_water.mp_'...i noticed that was also in my directory

Posted by: Chris000001

It's good to hear you got it working. I was just getting ready to suggest you check your version of brew against the one I'm using. I had forgot to copy 'ui_water.mp_' back to my phone. I tried moving that one too and even doing a master reset afterward, but they still don't work. The default beep sound does still work though. When I deleted my ring tones, I also deleted 'mytonesdb.db'. My guess is that has something to do with the scroll tones not working. I probably should have just hex edited the 'mytonesdb.db' file to remove the midi file names. Too bad I didn't save a copy of that file.

Posted by: DoN_BLaZe34

i'm not 100% what the scroll tones are....inform me on what they are and i'll check for you to see if mine are still working...

Posted by: Chris000001

main menu>settings>personalize>sound settings>scroll tone. They change what noise your phone makes when you press the up and down arrows on menu's (they're easiest to hear if you have the speakerphone turned on.)

Posted by: DoN_BLaZe34

oooooooh...hmmm mine still work then....so u're saying that u can see them in the menu, but u can't hear them? when i deleted my stock ringers, something told me to not delete those...rather i just deleted all the ringers and left those in...then i deleted the myvoice.db...rebooted them reloaded my ringers...don't know if that made a difference...

do me a favor..open ur phone then hit the scroll button to make ur volume go down..does it make noise? mine only makes noise when i adjust the volume going from 1 to 7 and NOT going down from 7 to 1...is this the same for u?

Posted by: Chris000001

Turning the volume down doesn't make noise, just when I turn the volume up. Unless the volume is all the way down and I close the top and re-open it. Then, the first time I volume up it also doesn't make noise.

So, in your 'audio' dir in brew, do you have any file(s) other than your ringers and the 5 'ui_...mp_' files? Perhaps a .db file? I'm not sure if that's where 'mytonesdb.db' was or not.

HINT: its in this forum. it explains it in page 1,2,3

Posted by: Muyoso

I think in order to get the scroll tones back onto the phone, all you need to do is reload all of them back to the audio directory, redelete the MytoneDB.db file and then restart your phone. And if anyone could email me their scroll tones so that i might be able to fix mine, i would be very grateful. Like an idiot i forgot to backup before i went on a deleting rampage.

does anyone still have the stock ringers? or a backup copy of them? i'd like them if possible

Posted by: DoN_BLaZe34

bump...anyone??

Posted by: Crossova

Ok ive heard all of the solutions and i feel that im fairly close to solving this.

I can navigate through all of the folders in Mitpim thanx to the USBSER fix. However now i dont have the option to delete any of the files. I am using ver 80. i can see all of the files i want to get rid of but the delete option is "greyed out"

As for Brew apploader i found some version but it wont connect to my phone which is on COM4. i went to inetron.com but the program was no where in sight. If some one could point me in the right direction. Im very close.

Thanx in advance.

Posted by: Crossova

ok i now have this version of Brew Apploader connected to my phone however like one of the earlier post it does not show me the directories i need. any clues on where to get a good version of Brew Apploader??

TIA

Posted by: Crossova

Never mind. i finally broke down and registered on the site and got access to the good version of BrewApploader. Problem solved

Humpa:

Can you (or anyone else willing to help) provide the list of where the stock images are stored (ie the directory through Bitpim) and a list of what images (by name) are safe to be deleted from the phone.

Additionally when I connect the phone through any tools, it resets the date (back by 5 days all the time..) Today (11/8/05) I connected and replaced the mma files and shut down, pulled the battery then came back 20 minutes later to restart it. The date was at 1/1/00. I went to the mobile web, and then the date refreshed to 11/3/05. What makes it do this? Is there a setting off somewhere? Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks

The pictures are in the motorola > shared > pictures directory.
I don't know that this is 100% "safe", but I've had no issues. I deleted everything from that directory except the customer_opening.gif, the VCAST.jpg, and the 4 wallpapers (they start with wp_).
I also deleted the 2 mp3's from the motorola > shared > audio directory. I left all the other files in there (the rest are .mid and .mp_ files, and are small anyway).

I've seen files available for download that contained all the stock pictures, perhaps at inetron? I've also seen all the stock ringtones and all the stock ringtones converted to mp3. But I forget where I've seen them too.

Posted by: Crossova

using both Bitpim and Brew Apploader you can find the pictures you want to delete in / Motorola/shared/pictures.

The files you want erased are the ones with an .ems extension. there are a few jpeg images too like: Martini.jpg and Vcast.jpg. all the files with dates as file names are pics that were taken using the phone.

Bitpim is good but Brew Apploader is less prone to give you errors. To get it you have to go to inetron.com and register for and account (about 2 seconds it takes) then go to the mobile section, then downloads to get the good version of Brew Apploader. Make sure that your phone is on COM port 1,2,3or 4.

As for the time thing i dont know try doing transfers while the phone is in suspend mode, that works for me. (Menu-->048263*--->54*-->OK) press the camera button to make the screen come back and press (back ---> cancel) to reset the phone.

where are you guys downloading brew apploader from? If i have to pay for it i will, but i just cant find it. I downloaded some other application that does not show me all the directories

If you don't already have an accoutn at inetron.com, sign up for one (like it was stated above..) and then go to downloads, page two:

http://www.inetron.com/

sorry links directly are not allow anymore...

Thats a great site, its one of the five I rely on!

Posted by: tranzfourmd

Thank you HUMPA and ne3ek for the responses to my questions above.
I will try putting the phone into suspend mode next time to see if that eliminates the date issue.

-all for a little phone freedom-

i downloaded bitpim 0.8.1 and when i go to setup it says: Access violation at address 004096DA. Write of address 00401000. What does that mean?

Posted by: tranzfourmd

Bad copy of installer files I would guess, try re-downloading it and then run again...

Posted by: mauricer1

ok guys, i was able to delete all the files i wanted to, but now for some reason SOME of the stock pictures that remained have the date 1/1/70. wtf? how do i fix this, did i do something wrong?

Posted by: cjmarchese@mac.

For anyone having trouble deleting the stock wallpaper's and ringtones off their e815 using BitPim, I reccomend to defintely try fixing all your USBSER files and make them the older version from 2000. I was able to delete my stock ringtones once I installed BitPim, but was getting error messages everytime I tried deleting stock wallpapers. After reading about 3 or 4 threads on the whole USBSER fix, I decided to give that a try. I went and searched my computer for any instances of the USBSER file, and I saw that about half of them were the correct ones from 2000, and half were not. I went and fixed them all to be the 2000 USBSER file and than restarted my computer. Sure enough, once I restarted BitPim I was able to delete all my stock wallpapers just as easy as I was able to delete my stock ringtones.

Just wanted to try and help anyone who is still having trouble using BitPim to delete their stock ringtones and wallpapers.

Posted by: Wirelezz

Does any one got Bell E815 to work with BitPim?
I can read my E815 in MPT but not in BitPim.
Also is there a Gain Table like the GSm version to up the volume?
Thnx

Posted by: replica9000

So far Brew AppLoader works fine on my v710, but it doesn't read from the transflash card. Bitpim will read fine from the card, but tells me all file sizes are 0. Anyone got any ideas on why this is, or how to fix it? Oh btw incase i missed this bitpim 0.7.32 works alot better than 0.8.xx, not as pretty though lol incase anyone had problems trying .8.xx

Oh and is there a way to get rid of the "Verizon Wireless" above the date on the internal screen?

change the banner to something you want, or for nothing at all, use PST to remove it from the cdma enhanced roaming section.

i never liked it removed, because the date sits below it and makes a background look ugly.

Well I got that installed, but it won't connect to my phone. Brew AppLoader uses Com 3, but PST will only let me choose between com 1 and com 2. Any way to make it use Com 3?

Posted by: RLG07734

pst does not use a com port. your motorola usb modem will disappear from the device manager and 4 new motorola devices will replace them, if you installed it correctly.

Posted by: replica9000

It came up with an error saying I can't install with service pack 2 for XP

Excellent Post Work for me. Thanks!

Posted by: abbadab

i am using the latest version of bitpim and for the life of me i cannot delete the stock pix. they do not even show up on the bitpim file system. i looked under Motp/shared/pictures and nothing shows up. i know this is an old post but i am using my friends old phone and cannot stand those images mixed in with my pics...

Posted by: RLG07734

i use p2kcommander 3.2.6 to work with my e815 files. but in order for that program to work, you need motorola software update for the proper drivers.

go here: http://mark.cdmaforums.com/MSU.htm

Posted by: abbadab

thanx for taking the time to help i do not know how to use p2kcommander so i will have to dig a little deeper on here i guess... thanx again!

Posted by: Usagi_Chan

I'm also trying to get rid of the stupid images and ringtones on my E815 and not having any luck. I have bitpim 1.0.6 installed and on startup an alert comes up saying ""No phone detected/recognized. Run settings?" If I click "No" it continues. If I then click on the + in the root folder of the phone it says "retreiving..." and a file structure is displayed. It seems to me that it is communicatng with the phone. Some of the folders contain files but many say "There are no items to show in this view."

In the /motorola/shared/pictures I get this message and no files are shown. It's my understanding that this is where the dumb images are supposed to be found.

I looked for BREW AppLoader and cannot find it, though I have doubts that it would be able to see the contents of those directories. Inetron.com no longer exists which is where varios posts say I can find it.

Posted by: bob_the_tomato

I've never had any luck getting bitpim to detect my phones, except for an LG chocolate. (that was about the only thing that worked right with that phone) I always run settings manually.

0. Make sure no other phone related programs are running. Bitpim is picky about this.

1. Set your phone model to E815m (the 'm' means you have done the seem edit to enable ringtone transfers - if you don't know what that means, don't worry about it. It only affects ringtones.)

2. Beside COM port, click browse.

3. Select 'Motorola USB Modem' under available ports. Then click OK on both windows and it should work. If Motorola USB modem is unavailable, unplug the phone, plug it back in, an click 'refresh'. If it doesn't show at all, go to the motodev website. Download and install the latest drivers, restart the phone and the computer, and try again.

4. After you have deleted pictures to your hearts content, power-cycle the phone and they will be gone.

Here's a screenshot of my working bitpim settings:

Then, in motorola\shared\picture, save each item you want to delete first, then delete it. A word of caution: bitpim is very effective at deleting files. Once you delete them it can be difficult to put them back so use caution.

This will not work for ringtones as the motorola\shared\audio folder is locked in bitpim. If you have success in deleting the pictures, post back and I'll go into the ringtones bit.

Posted by: RLG07734

i always used MSU and p2kCommander 3.2.6 to add and whack stuff from my e815, after doing the appropriate seem edits.

Posted by: Usagi_Chan

to: bob_the_tomato

Thanks very much. It was the drivers. I got the latest drivers from motodev, installed them and then rebooted. I could then see files in /motorola/shared/ folders. I deleted most then turned off the phone, took out the battery, waited about a minute, reinstalled the battery, turned the phone on and the images were gone.

Thanks very much

Usagi

Posted by: bob_the_tomato

Yeah MSU and P2KCommander are the only way to delete the stock ringtones. Bitpim works quite well though for deleting images, replacing images (you can't add them, only replace), and adding ringtones (with the seem edit).

The golden rule of cell phone files: (goldmembr's if I'm not mistaken)
Add files with P2kCommaner, delete files with bitpim. (the exception is ringtones as bitpim can't delete them)

Posted by: Usagi_Chan

I used p2kCommander and was able to remove the ringtones and the demo video. I tried newer versions of p2KCommander and couldn't get them to work. I used version 3.2.9 with success.

I've become fond of the mp3 player but with a playlist the background light comes on with each new song. Does anyone know if there is a way to stop this, perhaps with seem edits?

Thanks
