SX66 Sync Problem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have a sx66 with service from Cingular that will not sync with my PC. The PC is a Toshiba notebook using Windows XP SP2 with Office 2003 and Activesync 3.8. The PC recognizes the phone when it connects and starts up Activesync. It sets up the partnership and a guest partnership lets me explore the file system on the handheld. I can sync an IPAQ handheld with the notebook so it seems to work fine. I can take the handheld to several different PC's (one with a fresh image of XP SP1) and get the same exact issue. On the handheld, the Activesync interface changes to the today screen but Activesync remains in the running programs list (although it takes a hard kill to get it to shut down). Cingular tells me that I need their data services to make this work which makes no sense to me but I tried it without any success. Anyone have any experience with this or have any suggestions?

You definitlely do NOT need data services to sync to a laptop, as long as you're using wifi or the cradle. What does the system do when you connect it? Does it sync any part of it, or does the whole thing fail?

My guess is that the computer already has a partnership with the IPAQ so it's it's not trying to sync with the sx66 because it doesn't know how to sync with multiple devices... just a guess though. If the activesync software on the phone is locking up, you might need to upgrade / reflash the ROM. Are you using the standard Siemens ROM, or did you do any upgrades to it?

Activesync starts the sync process by looking for changes so in the status window I can see that progress. I've tried to sync anything, nothing, and everything so I could use office, stay away from office, etc. Right now it is just the calendar or tasks that I try. From the status window, it looks like it is trying to talk to the calendar on the handheld or on the PC and it blows up. The fact that I can sync my IPAQ tells me that it is talking to the PC calendar just fine so that leaves that handheld.

I understand the first guess at the dual partnerships but I've tried this on other PC's including one at work that has a fresh image of XP SP1 on it. I brought down ActiveSync and installed it fresh and connected the SX66 and it did exactly the same thing as my PC. After talking to Cingular, I tried this with a different cable instead of using the cradle as they thought it might be a hardware issue. It wasn't as it still didn't work. I've also tried both USB and serial connections with no luck. From these diagnostics, it sure looks like Activesync on the PC isn't getting through Activesync on the handheld to be able to get to office. Am I missing something here?

Sorry for the repost but I'm going to give this one more try before I punt and go get a regular phone again. Any ideas or suggestions on diagnosing or fixing the problem are much appreciated.

I just read the first post again and you said you're starting a guest partnership? That's the problem. You need to create a standard partership to be able to sync anything. A guest partnership is ONLY for browsing files / transferring to pda/computer.

I finally got it to work although I can't believe the solution. If you've gotten this far in the thread I hope that you have an SD card in the phone because that was the whole problem for me. I don't know how it works but if I have my SD card inserted when I connect the phone to the PC, it will error out every time. If I don't have the card in when I connect, it works just fine. Obviously, this appears to be a problem for Siemens to resolve but simply removing the card (as foolish as that sounds) may get you through this issue. Thanks for the assists and I hope that this solution helps someone.

That's just odd... an SD card should no effect on it, unless there is some app on the SD card that's doing it.

What are your ROM Specs? An updated ROM would probably fix this issue (hell maybe even just a hard reset if it's some setting that screwed).

I've been syncing my SX66 with a 1GB SD card in it since last December with no problem. Try a different SD card without the same stuff on it and see what happens.

try backing up all your files and do a ROM upgrade found on the Siemens website or if your pretty savey you can go to http://sx66-blueangel.home.comcast.net/ and download the latest updates.....
