I like my sidekick but its time to get rid of it - its just not pulling its weight. I feel like i pay 20 bucks a month for AIM and mapquest when i get lost. At that rate, i might as well pay more to get some fast internet access (verizon?)

I need a keyboard on my phone. Thats my only real requirement. I like the look of the Nokia 9300/9500 - they would be ideal if they were really supported at all in the states.

Do i have options yet? I dont see any. I don't want a crapberry really, and while the PDA/smartphones look nice they just havnt seemed slick enough to be useable. The wierd keyboard at the bottom of the tablet doesnt feel comfortable when i try them at the store.

I'm willing to get service from tmobile/cingular/verizon as necessary to meet my needs.

Specific needs: keyboard. email/web/aim. good inet via wifi or network. good email client. my OWN software on the device. ever since danger locked up the developer keys behind a bunch of bureaucracy i think i soured towards them.
also, no rockin rocket. wtf.

with those requirements you're looking tro spennd some cash. tre650, XDA, etc. etc. theres no semi-high end phone like sidekick 2. with a keyboard. and who cares if the 9500 isnt supported in america. its a slick phone. and does what you want. buy it!

If it's faster data speed that you want aside from the other functions you are seeking. Then you need to go with Verizon or Cingular. But be warned Verizon leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to their billing, and they have expensive rates as well. Cingular has edge available in most of their markets and currently are working on deploying the 3G UMTS service. If you can hold out for a little while longer T Mobile will eventually have edge available in most of thier markets, but not until 2006 or something like that. But some T Mo markets already have edge available, so it just depends on which market that you are in. In my opinion T Mobile has the best prices for data plan's but the least coverage of any of the major carriers. So if you need good bargain type prices and can get by with average data speeds then stay with T Mobile, if you want faster speeds then be prepared to spend a little more money and go with Cingular or Verizon.

Just a reminder the Nokia doesn't have Vibrate or backlit Keyboard. Treo has a crappy keypad, but you can do one handed operation. (It also doesn't have wifi I believe).

I would recommend trying out the PDA2K keypad before you buy it, I thought it was in a clumsy location with the slider. I think the key-less Jam has wifi but I don't think the PDA2K does.. can't remember.

The BenQ has everything you were looking for including wifi. Of course I have no experience with the keypad.

I know what you mean, because a full text keypad is now a necessity for me after using one for so long also.

The only thing I can say the wanna-be PDA called the sidekick has over ALL of the ones I've used is ease of operation with multiple open apps. I can use almost every program all at the same time. It's just a pleasure to use, with the things that it does do. Gotta love those jog wheels...

You're right...the SidekickII is extremely user-friendly. Simply easy to use.

I've gone through about every phone on the line of the sdk2. I tried hp ipaq h6315, sony ericsson p910i, treo 650, motorola mpx 300.... And the sdk2 really has the best messaging out of them all. The net on sdk2 kinda sucks cause of speed and javascript probs...but it somehow beats the others to me. We'll have a better selection in a couple of months when Windows Mobile 5 releases with powerful phones like the HTC Universal. Danger needs to stop limiting their devices and when WM5 drops, danger will be in serious problems.

My .02 cents
