Comparison 3.2.0 - 4.0.0

Got one of my S40s back from update to 4.0.0 yesterday and tested it against a 3.2.0. The result is a big disappointment. As far as I can figure it out, almost nothing has changed.

These bugs no longer occur:
- The modem returns an echo now after receiving AT commands.
- Messages of up to 158 characters can now be sent and stored with AT commands (previously up to 68 characters only) which is still a bug.
- Special characters in group names are returned correctly now (previously returned as "?").

That's all! Still no silent event reminders are possible, even though the Siemens engineers promised to "seriously consider" this botched feature.

A new CD-ROM version 05.01 is out, too, but it contains no newer versions than are available on the Siemens website for long.

In my opinion the update is not worth the hassle. It even has a major new bug: Incoming calls cause the phone to ring indefinitely when the address book wasn't loaded completely right after switching it on - you have to switch the phone off. That's why Siemens apparently pulled back 4.0.0 and will replace it with another revision (probably 5.0.0) in November.

That for the info, FR. Hmm, now I'm glad that I didn't rush to get my phone reflashed. As for 5.0.0 (a whole "1" higher), shouldn't there be more significant changes over 4.0.0?

One bug I have on my phone (3.2.0) is that I seem to have a "phantom entry" in my phonebook.
Ok, say I have a entry named Bob Smith. Has a mobile/home # in it. No problem. I can call Bob. But my phonebook will show an additional entry that just says "Bob" in it. It's not actually a number a name, can't do anything with it. Can't dial, can't move, can't delete. Nothing changes as a I add more entries. Just "Bob" is still there. Then after, one of my entries suddenly becomes "Bob". The title "Bob" is there and when I selected, it will show Betty's number instead. If I call the Bob entry, it will call Betty (kinda like a group but not.)

Am I making any sense? Has anyone else had this problem? FR, any ideas? I was hoping 4.0.0 would resolve this but from what you are saying, I guess not.

Help!

F.Ruehl,

That problem you described was already existed in earlier firmware version. I brought it in for service, got a new mainboard and updated firmware (I'm using ver. 3.2.x now) and the problem no longer exist.

mawti,
I had the same problem with mine when I first bought the phone. It is indeed a defect, and I brought it in for service, and they got the problem fixed, as well as a firmware update. Or I think if you know how to get it into engineering mode, and re-initialize everything, you might get the problem fix.

BTW, I brought it in twice for service in about less than a year time, to get both problem fixed described above, along with two firmware updates.

Mawti.... I think it's all double vision, my friend...

I haven't had that problem yet (and hope I don't). Would it change anything if you were to wipe out both the usable and the pantom "Bob", then recreate it?

Exactly what do you mean by returning an "echo"? After I send AT commands to the phone, I get the usual "OK" response.

The S40 modem doesn't return the characters typed with the terminal program, so you don't see what you type. Even ATE1 doesn't change this behaviour which is a bug. You have to switch on local echo in the terminal.

This is a very common bug that occurs in all software revisions. The reason is that the internal file system of the S40 gets messed up. This happens easiliy because it is basically unstable.
You have to make a reset (3.1.0 or higher) or send it in for an update.

Ahhhh.... gotcha'! Yeah, I just use local echo...

I still don't know if I really want to know how and where I'd get my firmware updated... ($__$)

Where have you guys found the 4.0.0 and 5.0.0 firmwares? I have called Siemens USA twice and both times the rep had told me the most current one is 3.2.0. The number I have is 888-777-0211. Do you guys have a different number?

The 4.0.0 update was available in Europe and is replaced by 5.0.0 these days. I don't know when it will be available in Nort America.

So firmware 4.0.0 is the same as 5.0.0? I could have sworn somebody in the US talked about their firmware updated to 4.0.0 after UPS'sing it to the US Siemens shop?

No it isn't though I don't know the differences, yet.
