MPx 220 or SMT 5600....Which one do you like best!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Omega2008

Ok I just wanted to see how many people like the MPx 220 or the SMT5600 (and all of its varients). This is just to collect data and have a understanding on what phone people perfer....DO NOT start a flame war plz...this is not about which is best but why you prefer one to the other. Thanks!

Posted by: sracer

SMT5600. Overall it offers all the features I need in a compact package.

Posted by: xburnerx

mpx220 for it's clam shell ability. i just can't stand large phones anymore. especially when i don't wear shorts with pockets.

Posted by: Omega2008

If the MPx 220 had the SMT 5600's larger screen I would be in love hahaha.

Posted by: canadian studen

I agree with you total Omega, if you have owned the MPx 200, and the 220, you will miss the screen size of the 200 cause it is just bigger. I Love the new os, buttons, and cam and BT on the 220, but I prefer the 200 body and screen. So since this is about 5600 ans thw 220, I would have to say both I loce the scren of the 5600 but i prefer the clam shell of the 220. But if I had to choose one I would choose the 220.

Posted by: sheltem

Tough call. I recently switched over to the mpx220. I love the better build quality and joystick but the smaller screen is a real killer for me. If HTC built better phones, than the 5600 would win out for me, sadly thats not the case... (I just sent my 5600 in to fix the dust problem and then im selling it asap). MPX220 wins out, with the slimest of margins, esp. with the new ROMs that fix a lot of problems. Has anyone heard of any news with the Samsung i270?

Yea I have heard of it....it seems to be a descent phone, however it doesn't support the 850 band which kills it for me.

Posted by: coronet

I've throughly used both, and I got to say I made the right choice with the SMT5600. It feels and performs more solidly, and runs great!

Posted by: nausea

I prefer the 220 cause I like clam shell and it has the best directional pad I've seen on a phone!

Posted by: another_punk

I had a MPx220 but got it exchanged for a SMT5600. To be honest, I like SMT5600 a lot better than MPx220. Why so?

- Screen is bigger, although not as bright
- Overall form factor is smaller
- Camera is much better
- Not very many design flaws (unlike MPx220's charger port, earpiece volume, screen scratches from the keypad, etc.)
- T9 input rocks!

Things I hate about SMT5600:

- dust issue is still there
- rocker D-pad is just awful
- keys are small

Posted by: cjmedina

for me its a hard choice i like the 5600 screen and i dont mind the candybar shape. i like the moto and the abilty to customize it reg edits and i love the flip phone and big keys. but i just hate the dust issue with the 5600 if it didnt have the dust issue i would say 5600 all the way. but i thibk the moto is a little better

Posted by: Omega2008

Thats what killed the SMT 5600 for me when I had one with AT&T when they first came out....I mean only had it a week and I kept it in a case outside my pockets and it looked like is snowed inside the screen....HTC really droped the ball on this one but hey Motorola dropped the ball big time choosing Chi Mei as the manufacturer of the MPx 220.....oh well hopefully the next one they will release will be of better quality, hardware and software wise.

Posted by: CERT_USAF

Personally (and yes I have tried both) I prefer the MPx 220. Been using mine daily for a good while now and I just prefer it. I must be lucky as I haven't been plagued by the problems that a lot of people have had such as low volume, and poor RF. My $$$ is on the 220 and will be getting one for wifey soon to replace her MPx200 :-)

Posted by: shackk

After using the mpx and using omega's tutorial on the reg edits I am starting to like it a bit better than my smt5600. I like the clam shell a lot better, no need to worry about the dust issue, although I never had the problem, and the bt seems to be a little bit better imo.

I don't like the speaker phone or mp3 playback through the speaker at all. Not nearly as clear as the smt but its ok and liveable. But other than that I have not had any other issues like most with this phone and trust me I have tried everything to crash it and still can't, just the occasional slow down.

Very pleased and it'll hold me over till wm5 is released.

Posted by: micaels

The mpx offered what I wanted in the most compact package and that's why I got it.

Posted by: Hi-Tek

I voted for the MPX 220. I recently tried out an SMT5600 but eventualy returned it. Cingular made me do an XBM since they were in denial that they were having network problems in the DC area. But alas, 2 days later my MPX was working like a dream...

The SMT5600 I was sent, had a dim and washed out screen compared to the MPX 220, and also the directional pad was a bit difficult to navigate with. I normaly love the candy bar style phone, but in this case the MPX worked out better for me.

Posted by: Omega2008

Thats one thing I love about the MPx 220...it does have a nice bright screen...just to small.

Posted by: ms2860

I loved my mpx220 (all 4 of them). Then came the problems: phones not charging, would not turn on, locking up, volume issues. Yes I understand the software upgrades have solved some of these issues (the charging problem is a hardware issue with the bus connector). However my smt5600 works great. Sure I miss the flip design and the mpx220 is **** sexy too, but I just could not deal with a expensive phone causing so many problems. Like a expensive GF it just became too much. As was once said in a song "you know I love you baby but its just getting too heavy to laugh". I wish you luck mpx220-s

Posted by: killah21

You can guess which phone I voted for, but I have no doubt that the SMT-5600 is a great phone. It is not the phone for me though. I like to have my phone in my pocket (im a real man, no screen protectors and no cases) and I have noticed only dust under the screen on the front of the mpx220. Well if I had the SMT-5600 it would be a dust monster. Plus im a flip phone kinda guy. The only bad thing about the mpx220 in my opinion is the awful earpiece and speakerphone.

Posted by: sherpa

I like SMT5600 more because of it's dimensions and screen size. I also hate flip-phones.

Posted by: Omega2008

Bump.....just keepin it alive so everyone sees it.

Posted by: cortez

well, after my MPx220 quit charging and Cingular said i'd have to wait 3-6 weeks for a replacement, i decided to move to the 5600. while both phones have their pros/cons i find myself adapting to the candy bar style rather easily and not missing my MPx220. there was this sense of relief after i sent it back to Cingular. i guess i was just burned out messing with it so much.

The one thing i really like about the 5600 is the the bigger screen...it seems clearer and colors are more vibrant. the other immediate plus is the voice dialing and the absence of issues (so far). i'll weigh in on this thread in about 2 weeks after i've had more time with the phone.

Posted by: jtmking

I've had three 220s in three months - with problems ranging from poor reception/excessive dropped calls to bad speakers and not charging. Cingular told me they are doing a recall on the 220 and sent me a 5600 to replace it. Everything is better on the 5600!

Posted by: TinmaN

Can I ask if anyone having problems with the mpx220 had a black model? I just bought a black one and I'm worried I might have the charging problem. The software problems I can deal with if I ever decide to try and flash, but so far the phone has worked great, no volume issues etc, except camera could be better.. much better.. but oh well, I knew it was not great going into the phone anyways.

I have a black, unbranded model and everything has been working fine. No glitches at all with the 3.46 rom. The only issue I still am having is the font change but since I have just done a hard reset that could change.

My mpx220 went dead last week, and I received the SMT5600 as a replacement last Thursday. I've been using it solidly, I was travelling this past Thur-Sun, so it got a lot of action.

I don't like the 5600 screen as much as the mpx220. Although it is a tiny bit larger, it looks like it's a lower resolution. It also can't keep but getting greasy and dirty, since it's not a clamshell and is constantly touching something.

I enjoy the rocker more than the 4 way pad on the mpx220, but it's fairly sensitive and takes a little getting used to.

The camera boots up much faster than on the mpx220, and also seems to have a faster shutter speed. It can snap pictures faster and saves them quickly. The colors are better, but it's really a shame it's stuck at 640x480 max resolution.

I miss having the custom mp3 ringtones for everyone. I think I saw that you can use .wav ringtones, I'll give that a shot later.

I can't get past the candybar. I'm amazed that I have to lock the phone everytime I finish using it instead of just snapping it shut. On top of that, I'm used to using my hand to stabilize the back of the phone while I text, and with the form factor the the SMT5600, I find that I will use both hands, one to hold the phone, the other to type. mpx220 wins out on this (for me).

I noticed people mentioned the size of the keys...they're tiny. I'm not a "big" guy, but I am 6'4" 190, and the buttons are tough for my paws. Again, mpx220 wins out on that for me.

Battery life seems longer for me on the SMT5600, which is great.

It's a good little phone, but the candybar factor just drives me nuts. I hope I can get my mpx220 back soon.

Posted by: ffaridi1

I like MPX220 more;
Even though I'm a candybar fan but in this case MPX220 is better,
My best friend exchanged his MPX220 with SMT5600 and I used his SMT5600 for a while, the navigation thing on SMT5600 is a real nightmare .... especially when you try to select some thing (click on a link etc) its very uneasy to do, as compared to the BIG blue button on MPX220, as this is the most used button on a smart phone , I dropped my idea of getting SMT5600 and I'll stick with MPX220 untill the release of MOTO-Q.

Screen is also not as good as in MPX220 and keypad buttons are way too tiny.

This is my stance exactly. I never even considered the 5600 because of the form factor. I want a phone I can close & drop in my pocket & not worry about (of course, this bit me in the @ss when my first 220 went through the washer/dryer while still in my pocket). Also, looking at the buttons on the 5600 just gives me the willies. I can't imagine that being easy to navigate with. That being said, the volume/quality of both of the earpiece and speakerphone are poor. That was the case with my silver model before it went through the wash, and my black model. Personally, I think those that say there's not a problem there either never use their phone in even moderately loud environments, or have never used a phone that has GOOD volume and quality. It's not so low/poor I can't use it, it's just very sub-par, IMHO. Otherwise, I really like the phone. And personally, I'll take small & bright over large & dim, considering that you aren't getting any more resolution in the larger screen.

Do I read this to mean that you can't do reg edits with the 5600? Is that right? I would have thought they'd be the same in this regard, since they're both MS Smartphones. In fact, from a software perspective, I wouldn't think one would have any great advantage over the other. If the above statement is correct, I'd think that'd be a big advantage to the MPx.

No, that statement is incorrect. You can do reg edits on the 5600 however there are some can only be done on the 220 and not the 5600 ie:removing the roaming icon, etc...

But you can font change, cleartype, etc... on both phones.

Posted by: dscline

Ah, ok, thanks. That did seem odd to me.

you do know that smartphones have been around longer than those two phones right? you do know that some people prefer a 3G phone right?

in short the preferred device for those that know is the i600

Posted by: Omega2008

I am very aware of other smartphones.....just wanted to compare the MPx 220 and the SMT 5600....I could care less about the Mio, Samsung, Audiovox Vox and the others right now.

Posted by: VIJOVAME

Well, I haved both and my vote is for the MPx220 , MPX220 vs. XDA IIs, my vote is for the XDA IIs, I'm just a little out in smartphone talking, I feel the Pocket PC and I will not leave it, NEVER!!!!, but the smartphone still good for my wife...LOL

Currently PPC Phone's have been too big but that new Samsung i730 from Verizon is pretty small and it has some killer hardware specs to boot. The HP messenger PPC's seem to be just as small and if they are I will have to check them out when Cingular gets them. May even get one if its the right size.

Yeap, but in my case, size is not a problem, I'm so happy with my XDA IIs, the LCD is BIG and i can play Playstation games on it if I want, surfing in the web is beautifull, specially if you are using a wifi hot spot from anywere free, I just looking for that HTC Universal, maybe that will be my next step... :rolleyes2

Posted by: Omega2008

Yea I am interested in the Universal too but I am pretty sure I don't want to drop a 1000 bucks for the device either.

Posted by: Omega2008

Yea the one you have is to big for me....if it was a lil shorter and skinner than I would like it...thats why I like the Samsung i630.

Where do you are? Canada? I converted that(if is canadas dollar) and are about $262.25 US dollars, you can find it on ebay in less...but i not sure if you are in canada??????

Posted by: onni

no im from norway:P i converted it to euro. Its new and without subscription.
if i import it from another country i need to pay a customs duty and its around 20%.

Posted by: VIJOVAME

I was searching that symbol and i find that is euros,
318.94 EUR Euro = 388.986 USD United States Dollars

Is too high for a MPx220, go to ebay and search!!!!

Are you sure? because I purchased a XDA IIs in UK and never pay extra, only if you go to usa and go back to europe with the phone you pay extra, but you can buy it on the internet and they send it in Royal mail or something???? Well I dont know if I'm wrong but why you need to pay that 20%?

Posted by: VIJOVAME

I will sell my MPx220 silver in about $175.00 US + shipping on ebay, it has some scratches but little, and was my wife with the nails ... .... but it has many programs installed....

Posted by: onni

its a customs duty we have in norway to prevent people from buying products from othere countries. actually its 24%, but i think i can get it without paying if the package is marked as a gift and under 158,89§.
stupid law

mpx220, just got it awhile ago cant use it cause its still not unlocked but its still good lol, played aorund w/ it a bit cant wait to get it unlocked still lookin for dealers lol

Posted by: juicerocket

Just got back from a business trip to NYC, and again put the phone through some more solid use.

a) Why does this thing roam everywhere? Is anyone else having this issue? It seems to go into roam out of the blue in the wierdest areas. I got back to Boston this evening, and coming out of my office noticed that the smt5600 was in roam with full coverage. I had to turn the phone off and then back on for it to reset out of roam.

b) The tiny keys are driving me NUTS.

c) At first I started to really like the rocker...now I'm starting to hate it. Can't tell you how many times I've gone to "click" it to select, but instead I've been off just a tad and it's scrolled left or right instead, etc.

d) Still big kudos to the much faster camera. Like I said before, I really like how the camera boots up so quickly. It also seems to have a faster shutter speed...with the mpx220 I really had to hold it still for a good 2 to 3 seconds after i snapped the picture to maintain quality.

Posted by: cdvax11

You are aware the Cingular has discontinued the mx220, right?

Posted by: Omega2008

No Cingular has not discontinued the MPx 220, it will be reintroduced in October, also they will be phasing out the SMT and replacing it with another smartphone.

Posted by: matthiasj50

Hey guys, NOOB here. I've been doing some research on cell phones, and researching smartphones. I found out about howardforums.com, and searched some here. From the beggining i wanted a SMT 5600. It seemed like the best bang for the buck. I didnt know about the MPX 220, but that phone is cheaper, and seems to have the same features, maybe some more. I'm a computer geek, and cant believe i still havent got a smartphone. Is the MPx 220 a better bang for the buck? All i want it to do is to take a few pics, play a few videos, and just be a nice phone. I HAD a Sony T637, and i'm not using an old Nokia, i broke the Sony.

Posted by: Omega2008

The MPx 220 and the SMT are both good. Depends if you want a clamshell or a candybar phone. I wold wait for the new WM5 phones down the pipeline....the HTC Tornado will be out here in October.

i dont have that kinda money.

Posted by: Kay Soze

If you search you'll see what a nightmare my MPX220 had been.

I had two and both were the worst phones I have ever owned.
