How do I know if I am receiving EDGE

I have a Nokia 6230 and 6620, both of which I understand are EDGE capable.
I don't notice any icon on the screen that indicates EDGE service, only the G for GPRS. The speed of the web browsing is noticably faster than V3 and RIM 7290 however, which leads me to believe that they are taking advantage of EDGE.
How can I tell for sure if they are receiving EDGE? Is EDGE simply a faster form of GPRS, and therefore no special indicator would be needed?
