I don't know if this has been posted, but if not, enjoy.

You have to have an IR or BT connection to your phone.

Download the NkProfile3 archive. Install the demo of MobiMB. Connect your phone to your computer. Run NkProfile, wait for it to recognize your phone. Click on the settings tab, then uncheck the CSP box. You're done. You may have to restart your phone.

Too bad that with the new SIMs all the networks are "Cingular."

Good find. Just tried it and it works....

Posted by: ArtMan

Cool, after fighting with MobiMB, Widcomm, and native bluetooth XP ; I finally got it to work. This allows me to select the other cingular tag and use #121 again. With manual select I get the options all Cingular, I was assuming Tmobile might have been listed, I will try again later.
Thanks again.

thanks! it works, now i have a better signal @ my house! w00t! it displays everything as cingular though.... hmmmmm :\

RH-28_443 A matching profile for your model of phone has not yet been submitted, or is not included in this version of NkProfile.

alrighty, what am i doin wrong.....

nevermind....User ERROR.......

Holy cr@p, it worked! I've got both DKU-2 and DKU-5 cables for my various Nokia phones. You can guess what I'm going to do to them now...

So this trick works with:

Nokia 6230 (Cingular)
Nokia 6820 (AT&T Wireless)

This trick DID NOT work with:

Nokia 6800 (AT&T Wireless)
Nokia 9500 (Generic)

Posted by: kuj

Excellent! It works! Thanks! I have a 64K SIM too. I used the DKU-2 cable and registered version of MobiMB.

Is Cingular Extend T-mobile?

Posted by: albertr

It works on 6230b, indeed. Nice find. Should be in the FAQ.

There's a parameter in the SIM that controls what the phone displays, defined in CPHS. The feature was originally used on virtual networks in the UK, and also with both T-Mobile(CA) and Cingular (NYC), to display the correct tag for a virtual network operator. One of the possible options for this flag controls only the name of the home system, but the option that Cingular now uses is the one that forces it to ALWAYS show the home system's name. Previously, they had it set up so the home network would always show as Cingular, while all others would show up as Cingular Extend. Both suck, IMO.

Sadly, there are only two ways to change this. One is to hack the SIM, either through the OTA update mechanism or with a reader. The other is to get a firmware load on your phone that doesn't support CPHS. In the past, finding that firmware wasn't hard, but these days, Nokia doesn't seem to put out firmwares for US-spec phones without CPHS.

Me, I couldn't care less about the features CPHS allows, but Cingular does!

Using the technique listed here, I uncheck the CSP in my Nokia 6620, but I don't see any improvement. As a matter of fact, it got worse. If I set the network to manual, at some point I get a beep saying searching for networks, and basically the phone has not service at all. I must switch it to automatically. Also it says updating the SIM, but it takes forever to do this. I let phone to update the SIM for about an hour or so, finally I stopped it.
In manual or automatic mode, the bars still fluctuate.

That happens to me as well, though I live on the fringes of coverage anyway, so that is bound to happen. At least I can get a better connection most of the time.

so are there any fee's or costs involved since you're only running a demo version of mobiMB

and i think i read someone doing it, but will i be able to do this with my data cable??

yes, it works with cable, but I had to uninstall nokia suite. Garbage bloatware anyway. Unchecked CSP as instructed in OP, however, I am now wondering: how can I install net monitor? I've never played with the phone with the cable before other than to move a couple pics off the phone to the computer.

Want to know which network and strength etc. HELLP!

In newer Nokias Net Monitor is not even in the normal firmware. You'll have to send your phone to someone to flash the unbranded firmware with Net Monitor. A FBUS/MBUS cable won't do it, you have to have some special hardware...

thanks for the info ...

Worked for me as well, but I do have a question. When I go into to manual selection Cingular is only listed twice. On a hunch, I choose the second; does that sound right?

Posted by: corrupt

That means that your phone is detecting two networks. Cingular's new SIMs force the tag to say Cingular on all networks, even though one of those is another non-Cingular tower. Could be a blue tower, or a T-Mobile tower.

OP: You ROCK! And just saved me $30 to send it to iUnlock (then agin, Netmon and no branding would be nice.)

Posted by: chonga

one word: WOW

weirdo, you are the man....and made my night

if you were here, i'd buy you a beer

Posted by: wierdo

FWIW, this didn't work for me on an AT&T branded 6200. I also tried to get NkProfile2 running, but it *****ed about not having Mobius/PX, even after I installed the latest version.

Posted by: daftgem

Is it just me or was NKprofile3 removed from the website ???

Does anyone know where I can find it?

Hmm, if you have newsgroup access and a nzb reader, someone posted it to alt.binaries.freeware. Here's the nzb file, zipped...

what exactly does this program do? boost your reception only or something else as well? also will this work on a t-mobile 6230b as opposed to the cingular one?

It disables the Customer Service Profile function of many Nokia phones. CSP is basically a table on the SIM that tells the phone which service menus to enable. One of the things it can do is disable manual PLMN selection. Disabling CSP makes the phone ignore that table, leaving the network select menu in place.

So, to clarify....this program will disable the CSP on your sim which basically allows you to use multiple networks?....that's what im getting from this and it doesn't make complete sense. For example: im on t-mobile and with this program i could then use cingular networks?.....or if not, what am i getting wrong?

Thanks

It disables the phone's support for CSP. CSP is the mechanism by which the SIM requests the phone hide the network selection menu. If your SIM doesn't disable the menu, it won't do you any good to turn CSP off. Just remember, whether or not you are allowed to roam is controlled by the network, not the phone, so in cases where there isn't another operator you're allowed to roam to, it won't help anything.

Does this work on the 6682?

Wierdo, has "hacking the SIM" ever been done to enable this feature? Can any of the Hofo merchants do it?

Also, does this work on latest firmware 6230bs (5.50 I believe)? I'm thinking about sending my 4.43 in for an upgrade.

Thanks.

I've only tried it on 4.43, but surely someone else here has done it on newer release.

As far as "hacking the SIM" is concerned, you won't find someone to do it here, assuming it's even possible without cracking Ki (which is probably something we ought not discuss here, beyond mentioning the mere existence of the possibility). It's possible Cingular's SIM allows update of the CSP table without authenticating with more than PIN1 or PIN2, but I'd be surprised. If it does, all it would take is a device that can write to the SIM card.

Is manual selection the only thing that CSP controls? Are there any side effects such as other things getting enabled/disabled, when you disable CSP?

There are several other things controlled in the CSP table. I forget what all, but the document defining CPHS, which includes CSP is available from etsi's website.

Section 4.28 of this document defines table EFust. (why doesn't vB have a subscript tag?) If the table exists (or if the phone is paying attention to it), the phone will control the availability of the functions defined in that table based on the table's contents. That document isn't the final USIM spec, nor is it the full original CPHS doc I was looking for, but it contains the information you seek. Further information can be found on ETSI's site, who is kind enough to allow free download of their specs, if you're willing to register on their site. It's a veritable treasure trove if you're interested in the inner workings.
