1)WHat format is the rintone suppose to be in?

2) I downloaded some simple ringtones but the extension is *.mmf, How do I convert that to the *.mid or whatever file format the LG 8000 takes?

3) Is there a site where I can grab just simple FREE NON music ringtones for the LG

You can use any mp3 or mid file as a ringtone.

I'm not sure what you mean by non-music ringtone since ringtone implies some form of musical prelude, though you can get voice ringtones and sounds. Query yahoo or google for free mp3/mid files...there are tons of sites. You can even make your own mp3s.

Walmart's website, under the CD Music section, you can preview songs that are in the mp3 format and also save them to your PC for transfer to your phone. They are all 30 sec in length and perfect for ringtones.
