i've searched the internet quite intensely and have found no direct answer to my question, which is this: can the lg vx4500 use voice memos as ringtones?

You can on the Vx8000....just try it....record a voice memo and see if you can highlight it and select it as a ringtone. You probably wont be able to do this through the regular ringtone menu...you will most likely have to go to the menu where ever your voice memos are stored and select it there.

A simple No is the answer. I have tried and tried and tried to get it to work with my 4500 but nothing. It sucks when all your friends have like 20 recorded ringtones and you still need to go to "get it now" and pay 2 bucks for one

Buy a cable and download bitpim, audacity and an image editor. Then you can make your own ringtones and wallpapers. Cheapest, and in my opinion, best way to do it with that phone.
